Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech diNovo Edge Keyboard (Black)Customer Review: This keyboard is the best ever! Summary: 5 Stars
I love my diNovo keyboard; it is so cool that I feel all wrong using my computer's regular keyboard. The light weight and super-thin sleek board are such a welcome change from what usually passes as a keyboard. I don't think I could ever really go back to a standard keyboard.
This keyboard has some very nice features, like programmable (lighted!) hotkey registers (they are under the polycarbonate panel), and these are really neat, but honestly, I don't seem to end up using them all that much. I suppose I could have done without them, but they are nice to have.
This keyboard has a neat little integrated touchpad, so in theory one could do completely without a mouse, but here again I don't quite do it that way; I do use a wireless mouse along with the keyboard.
This keyboard does not have a 10-key pad, but does have some of the common editing and cursor moving keys in a similar location. This seems an advantage, and certainly does keep the size down.
You won't find a more elegant keyboard anywhere, at least for the time being. This diNovo unit is somewhat expensive, but the Bluetooth link is totally reliable, the board is ultra-sleek, lightweight, extremely high quality, and just all-around cool! It's very easy to get religious over this keyboard, once you own it and get used to it. You've been warned!
One thing though, and this isn't a complaint at all, but some people may not like the style of keys in this board. They feel great to me (they are like an elegant version of the light-touch, low-travel keys on most notebook computers) but this means that if you specifically seek the heavier, longer travel keys with the big springs in them that the old-school hard key bangers are into, then you won't want this board... not that you wouldn't get used to it just fine, though.
Customer Review: The best out there but still needs work Summary: 4 Stars
Without a doubt the best thing out there that has keyboard and touchpad everyone knows. This is my 3rd dinovo edge.....Why? Right below the touchpad you have the left and right buttons that stick after about 6 months of use. First to go is the left button, then after a few months the right button goes. The scroll feature I just love because you can pan and scroll from the keybad, no need to reposition. The keypad is silent but really needs to be backlit like the new microsoft 8000 system. The battery life is phenominal and charges pretty quick. The docking system, they really didn't think much about. If you don't drop it in the slot, it wedges itself in and especially at night you can't see much and IT IS black. I really wanted to give this review a 3 because the product really failed way to soon but the seemless integration of keyboard and touchpad along with flawless bluetooth connectivity, I bumped it back up to a 4. Bluetooth had some problems that I figured out to be my phone's bluetooth that was smack in the line of site between the keyboard and the computer. I moved my phone to the other side of the table and it was fixed. I also moved the usb dongle to the top of my computer for shorter line of site.
To recap if your listening Logitech:
It needs a more ergonomic keyboard shape and left right buttons that don't fail. All I do is buy a new one from fry's and put the old one right in the box and send it back to you anyways :-). Docking needs a wedge free design and FINALLY, please move the touchpad up on the keyboard at least 3 inches so I can rest my wrist on the keyboard comfortably and not curled up and hanging off the edge of the keyboard. (This touch pad location has led me to a numbness in my wrist so I am now giving up the edge for a optical trackball design).
Customer Review: A Bit Flaky - Not Worth the Money Summary: 2 Stars
There are many positive aspects to this keyboard. For starters, installation was a breeze - a real plug-and-play experience. The keyboard itself feels very solid and is nice and thin. It holds its charge well and recharges quickly. And a number of the keyboard features, in particular the volume slider and the programmable hotkeys, worked well and were quite useful. However, there were a number of drawbacks that led me to return the product.
First and foremost, there were connectivity issues. It synced up right away and held the sync for many hours, but once or twice a day it would stop working. Power-cycling the keyboard would re-establish the bluetooth connection, but that's not the type of problem you expect from such an expensive product.
The other feature that I had issues with was TouchDisc scrolling. The idea was brilliant; Hold your finger on the right hand side of the TouchDisc and start moving it in a circle and you're scrolling down a long web-page. Unfortunately, getting it to work on a consistent basis was something I was never able to figure out. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it would not. Given that this was supposed to be a time-saving feature (it lets you keep your hand on the mouse-pad rather than going back and forth to the arrow-up/arrow-down keys), the flakiness made it quite undesirable.
The final straw for me was that after 4 days of use, it started to show some wear. There's a very thin layer of something on top of the metal that started peeling (I'm not referring to the protective plastic that comes with the new product). Part of the appeal of this keyboard was that I wanted something that looked great in my living room, as I'm using this for an HTPC. If I noticed new blemishes after 4 days, what would it look like in a year?
Customer Review: Great keyboard, better HTPC keyboard. Summary: 4 Stars
The Logitech diNovo Edge keyboard is indeed a great find. I have been looking for about 6-8 months now for a keyboard that is under $200, sleek, solid and includes a built-in mouse.
Pros:
Solid feel, quick response (I believe they talk about some rapid type technology of sorts in their product propaganda, er, details.). The keyboard is very thin, and a good weight - while on your lap it does not feel like a paper plate nor does it feel like a brick.
The range is good (bluetooth - ~30 ft).
Pairing could not be easier.
WORKS IN THE BIOS.
Works well under both linux (test with Ubuntu 8.04 64bit, 8.10 64bit and 9.04 32/64bit), and windows vista 64bit.
If one looses connection, a simple press of the connect button on the keyboard, and then on the usb bluetooth dongle will fix that.
Battery life is incredible (mine claims that I still have about 50 days left off of one charge.
Cons:
Charging base-station is a little awkward to get the keyboard on there just right (though, I'm sure that over a little bit of time it won't be as hard).
Mouse is not very responsive and a little harder to use than something like a macbook pro's touch pad.
The touchpad will allow you to scroll by running your fingers vertically on the right side - but it's not the greatest.
The diNovo definitely does it's job, and does it well. The keyboard includes little lights that will illuminate ABOVE the function keys (no, the keyboard is not backlit), and the volume line lights up to the left as you move your finger up or down. It's a very nice keyboard, but if you plan to use it at a PC that is for extended use, or graphics design, or gaming or anything mouse intensive, buy a separate mouse.
Customer Review: I miss my number pad! Otherwise, I"m pretty happy Summary: 4 Stars
This is a really great keyboard, and it looks slick on my coffee table! The aluminum wrist rest is slightly cold to the touch at first, re-iterating the nice materials used. As far as gadgets go, this is a good one to have.
I got this thing several weeks ago and haven't had to charge it since the day I got it (the manual says 60 days, so we'll see).
As far as keyboards go, here's my take on it: it takes some adjustment if you're used to a full 104-key keyboard. I'm still not quite there yet. The lack of number pad made me realize I won't be able to enter "Alt+#" keystrokes anymore, which I previously did almost daily. The keys do feel pretty nice and it's a solid hunk -- heavier than I expected. It DEFINITELY does NOT feel cheap in any way.
The touchpad kind of sucks. It works in general, but it's pretty small, the left click button (on mine at least) doesn't work very well, the scroll doesn't work that well at all, and occasionally I will find the mouse pointer somewhere else on the screen suddenly because it got confused.
The hotkeys are pretty nice. I was very pleased to find out that they work even when Windows is locked with a password! I was also quite surprised to find that they actually controlled Winamp the very first time I used the keyboard. I'd personally rather have separate buttons for these hotkeys rather than pressing the "Fn" button, but to each his own.
If I had paid the retail price for this, then I wouldn't think it's worth it; however, with a sale price AND a mail-in rebate, it was a pretty sweet deal and I like what I got. If you're willing to spend the money on it and like having high-end things, then this is something you will probably like. HTH :)
