Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 505-Watt 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker SystemCustomer Review: Good customer GONE Summary: 4 StarsLike the product fine! Looked at it on Amazon for over a year, hoping to get a better price! Finally decided to purchase. THE FOLLOWING DAY Amazon reduced the price substantially. I requested the new purchase price, got a terse, "sorry, but no" response. Kept the product...but Amazon lost a buying customer!
Customer Review: No HDMI, No problem Summary: 4 StarsI've had the Z-5500's now for about 9 months and my opinion of them hasn't changed since day 1. For the money, as countless others have stated, this system can't be beat. 500 watts with THX certification? Forget about buying anything else and get this system, that is, unless you have the money to build a system, piece by piece. I actually purchased this system from a competing company to amazon, for $198 plus free shipping. Buy your cables from monoprice.com for a few dollars a piece and you're ready to rock.
forget what others say, this system is LOUD. So loud, it shakes my whole house and can be heard blocks down the street if I have a window open and crank the volum up to boost mode. I use these speakers as my livingroom surround sound, hooked up to a Samsung 46-inch 550 model and PS3 for Blu-ray, DVD, and mp3. If I don't feel like turning the ps3 on to listen to music, I'll just connect my iPod directly through the auxillary imput. These speakers more than fill up a room that is 350+ square feet when watching a movie. So, anyone who says they sound "hollow" or "tiny" when placed in a large room is full of crap.
My only real complaints are: It would be nice to have wireless rear speakers, for obvious reasons. It's a pain running speaker wire all around the room and trying to hide it from view. AND, the speaker wire they give you isn't nearly long enough if you're not using this system in a small dorm room, so be prepared to shell out for your own speaker wire. Also, no HDMI input/output. Logitech should really update this design to meet the growing technology. However, for the price, this isn't a sticking point. I mean, this blows away competing systems at 2 times the price and 5.1 through optical hookup still sounds pretty darn good. So, I can overlook this flaw. I highly recommend you purchase this system. Use the money you save for a good blu-ray player, like a ps3
Customer Review: Great Product, follow the instructions & you'll be good Summary: 4 StarsPros: Digital Dolby, DTS, THX certified, sounds great on HBO HD and all the channels that support Digital Dolby, i'm using an optical cable, with the cox box & PS3 as well as the Power Mac G5, aux for the iPod
Cons: not any really wish the cable for the speakers were longer
Customer Review: Not a 1 star product Summary: 1 StarsWriting this review for all of the peeps the only look at 1 star reviews to get "honest" opinions. I've had them for 2+ years, never needed to deal with costumer service. Sounds is really quite good for computer speakers, the satellites perform as satellites do with crisp high end response, a little bit tiny sounding, lacking mid range sound. It's a little difficult to find a balance that tricks your ears into hearing a flat mid-range, but that's what you're buying. I've been using them lately with blu-ray digital on a PS3, work great. The setup is easy (e.g. plug it in). I didn't notice a lick of difference with MP3's playing optical or with the the 3 1/8th inch connectors (forget what they're called, maybe just stereo, or 5.1). However, digital with the blu-ray or a 96kHz hi-fi or HD music file is terrific. The surround sound is good and there's a lot of flexibility with how you setup the sound in accordance with your tastes. You can also use the THX tool that comes with the system to further tweak, I found the tool a bit cumbersome but you can tweak individual speaker volumes which is nice.
Lastly, as for it's durability, again, had it over 2 years, it has a bug where the power doesn't work, remedied by unplugging the sub and plugging it back in - happens about 3 times a year. This little bug is probably due to the fact that my house flooded 4 inches of water and soaked the woofer and the power strip on the ground. Dried it out for 2 days, still works with this little bug. The guy who blew his woofer twice is seriously pushing the limits of the device. A likely scenario is that it overheated since these kinds of subs get stuck in the corner somewhere without ventilation and it can draw some heavy power for a computer device, thereby generating a lot of heat.
Overall, it's not a bad product, I'm about to buy a set for a birthday gift. I like good sound, without breaking the bank. This is a nice in between. Want better? It'll cost you. The only con I would say is lacking warmth in the midrange which the sub doesn't quite mask and the satellites can't quite acquire. Pros: it's real surround, 5.1 dolby, dts, thx, the works, and for the price tag, it's great.
Customer Review: Incredible sound at a great price, but no wall mounting hardware Summary: 4 StarsI love these speakers, I think they're incredible. One thing that I love especially is that the digital cables to connect the satellites to the sub woofer come pre-twisted. I remember an old set of 4.1s I had and I had to twist the cable ends myself, what a PITA.
I would have given these a 5 star review if they only came with wall mounting hardware. The manual says "Use appropriate wall screws and posts to secure each speaker to your wall". Well what the hell is an "appropriate" wall screw and why don't these very expensive speakers come with some?
