Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker SystemCustomer Review: Speakers are probably great....but the service.....NO Summary: 1 Stars
Alright, so after about 2 weeks of searching for a speaker system to get I finally decided on the 5500. It's kind of sketchy making this decision because I have never heard the actually sound produced by the speakers...just read countless numbers of reviews. So last night I told me self, "Hey the price is down to 269 with "free" shipping so I'll order them in the morning." Well I woke up and was so angry to find out that the price had risen to 306 (Well there's where the shipping isn't free anymore). I was soo mad. I had remembered reading the reviews and one stuck out in my mind. It is tnhe one from Jim (Texas). He states that he had the same problem as me. His revied says that he e-mailed them many times and they finally honored the lower price (even though the price was still higher). So I decided to e-mail Amazon today and tell them of my concern. I got one of those automated e-mails back which did not address my concerns at all. So then later that night I decided I would call Amazon and see what happened. I was on the phone and after giving them all my information I told them the whole story and how I read the review of Jim. The lady told me she really couldn't do anything for me. She stated something to the effect of: 'I really can't do anything for you...I don't know why Jim's situation was honored....It really depends on the person you talk to on the phone that determines the outcome of the situation.' I was pretty aggravated after getting off of the phone. How can one person be honored their request and then an Amazon associate tells you that the situation will be determined by the person you talk to. Maybe i'll just keep calling and see if I can sweet talk one of them. As for the Logitech 5500 speakers I really can not wait to get them, I am just really disappointed in Amazon's inability to treat customers equally.
1/4/05 update- Well after a very intense e-mail writing to Amazon how I did not want an automated e-mail in return I recieved a somewhat more personal e-mail. After being a little aggressive they were really nice about honoring my request...so I thank them for that...I'll post another review on the speakers later.
Customer Review: A complete and solid sound speaker system Summary: 5 Stars
Control Unit: The control unit is much larger than I had anticipated standing wider and taller than the speakers that this system comes with, but this makes for better handling hands on for volume and settings. Easy to push buttons toggle the display for sound options and control knob turns easily with small resistant increments. The remote controls the device 100% if the control unit is placed at a distance.
Satellite Speakers: The satellite speakers have a heavy feel to them weighing in at 4.5, 5 pounds each. The plastic feet are molded into a sturdy shape, however the plastic itself is of cheap quality. The feet swivel so they can be set down on a flat surface or hung from a vertical back or front walls. Hanging them upside down from a ceiling or rafters will not work properly as the feet are in a "U" shape putting to much stress on the mounting holes and cheap plastic.
Subwoofer: The sub is VERY BIG. 16 1/4" x 13". This does not include the added length of 1 1/2" on the back for the heatsink. The bump coming off a few of my songs rattled loose some florence lights I had in storage on the other side of the house! The ports on the back include all the speaker wire connections, a power switch and a VGA connection for the control unit.
Sound encoding support includes THX, Dolby Digital pro logic II and dts 96/24. The sound is clean. The bass is precise and the surround is amazing. I strongly recommend pairing this whole speaker set with a high quality soundcard for added sound management, surround for games, and cinema for movies. I personally use the Creative X-Fi Titanium Pro that uses all the encoding the control center supports. It would almost seem like this speaker system and card were made for each other.
One conflict I have encountered with the high quality soundcards working with this system is some functions can be redundant. I have surround controls on the card and also the control unit. These functions and others similar to these; subwoofer, surround, center, rear, can fight each other for control. If less is more in your world, skip the soundcard. This speaker system will stand out on its own.
Customer Review: awesome... Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this October 22 2:00 am west coast and got shipped that night. Very fast considering I got free shipping that was expected to be delivered 5 to 9 days. I recieved it October 28. I was one of the lucky ones (I guess) to order it when it was $279 with free shipping. I actually submitted a request for $285 few days earlier. That's for amazon.
As for the speakers... just unbelievably awesome. I've never really had good speakers and can never really tell the difference between of how good and bad speakers sound. But these speakers sound very clean and the bass is just perfect(adjustable to your liking of course) which I can honestly now say these sound way better than your typical speakers. It's as if I'm in the movie theatre. The bass isn't just the usually bass thump, but an enjoyable thump! I'm not a bass person cause I usually get headaches from it, but listening to these speakers and playing movies made me enjoy the sound cause it was natural sounding. The louder I put the volume, the better it gets. There is just no words I can say that can do justice to these speakers. You have to hear it to believe it. The controller is awesome looking and easy to use (automatically detects the type of source e.g. movie, cd, video game). The subwoofer box is pretty big so you gotta have space for it. And to me, they look pretty good too.
I am primarily using this for entertaiment use only(movies and video games) so you know these speakers must be good. Those who think $300 is worth great computer speakers, you will not be dissapointed. The sound card should be able to plug in separate front, rear, and center/subwoofer inputs. And to think, I actually thought about buying a mini system that cost the same price. One thing though, if your system is on the older side, it might be wise to upgrade because these sound a lot better with an optical fiber cable than the basic rca cable with a Y cable adapter. Coax cable I heard is pretty good too( but not the same level as the optical). My primary source is my xbox, so I had to buy an adapter for my xbox to allow optical, as well as an optical fiber cable. All worth it.
Customer Review: Remarkable product for the price! Summary: 5 Stars
Hooked this up to new family computer in dining/family room area which has fancy soundblaster X-Fi sound card, TV tuner and radio, too. We've watched TV, listened to iPod, had FM radio playing through it and watched a THX soundtrack DVD on it so far and all were a joy to hear. This system is not at all 'tinny' as so many small sat systems can be. Speakers mount easily on walls, if desired, or stand on small areas of flat surfaces. I have a full-sized Onkyo system with separate A/V receiver, DVD player, VCR, power line management, etc in our basement TV room which puts out impressive sound and this system, though not quite as rich or full in mid-range particularly, (due to Onkyo's dual 5" mini-woofers in center and two front speakers,) is nonetheless an incredible sounding and unobtrusive little sound system. The subwoofer is big and heavy - two prerequisites for all lower priced subs that are capable of producing decent bass - so it performs well but takes some hiding. It has limitations for placement, however, because it is front-firing but also has a left side of unit bass port, which helps with its capabilities but then limits where and how it can be placed without affecting output quality. Other than that minor complication, it'll provide better sound quality than almost any Home-Theater-in-a-box system that you'll find, with very few exceptions. If you don't need to spend as little as this costs and you want 'superior' sound for a few hundred more, you should do the research on Hsu Research's entry-level system at hsuresearch.com. They are the 'real deal' in terms of high end sound at decent HTIB prices. I just didn't want to add the extra cash for a family/dining area system because I have the big one downstairs already. Overall: get this system - you will not be dissappointed! Great bang for the buck and no need for additional A/V receiver, because of tiny control unit attached to powered Sub Woofer! You can wire three different components into this unit via Digital Co-ax, 3x mini-jack computer connection, plus Optical Audio in. It even has a bonus additional mini aux input for direct iPod connection. Very cool product!
Customer Review: This is a home theater in a box! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the Z-5500 after doing a good amount of research with over 95% of owners exclaiming how they loved it. This purchase was originally intended for my computer, however after opening the box, unpacking and setting everything up (about 30 min) I found that this would actually be more suited for a home theater system as opposed to a computer 5.1 setup. I live in a 2bd apt. and these speakers wouldn't be able to be used efficiently in a small bedroom (too loud) i.e. the reason for bringing them out to the living room. Let me now say "WOW!" for the price of $250 after the mail-in rebate. I do believe that you would be hard pressed to find a home theater with the same quality as these speakers for anywhere near that price. The fact you get pro logic II and THX cert. in this setup makes it that much better, and for TV and movies the 5.1 separation is fantastic. The room size I have this setup in is about 14'x18' and these speakers fill the room up nicely at about 1/2 volume, and if you really want to crank it, the speakers handle it with ease... on that note the 10" sub hits nice, clean lows and if full volume isn't enough, just keep turning up the volume and after about 1/2 turn on the nob and it goes into boost mode and you can turn it up even louder. The long and the short is, if you have a budget and cant afford a $700-1000 home theater system, I can vouch that this will tide you over until you can afford one, and once your ready to upgrade you have a great 5.1 setup for you computer... Thats my plan anyway. I am very happy with this setup and would recommend it to anyone for the price. Last thing, I read a review that stated the speakers had a hum with the volume turned up without audio playing, well they must have had a bad input signal, because I don't get a hum even if I wanted to get one... The one negative thing I have to say is that it doesn't have a HDMI connection (I know this is marketed for a computer speaker system), but with everything else they packed in, I am surprised that it wasn't included, however the optical input and the coaxial do the job for me just fine. 9 out of 10! (always leave room for improvement.
