Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech X-140 2.0 SpeakersCustomer Review: For under $30, you're not going to find anything better in this class Summary: 5 Stars
If you're looking for simple computer speakers, and want good sound quality, you've found a match.
But what you get with these speakers is sound quality you don't expect from a package this size. And for under $30, these speakers deliver in areas most other can't. The build quality on these is amazing. My friend has had them for the past year or so and they are dropped, moved, knocked over, and turned way up by him and our other friends all the time. They still perform beautifully after all the abuse, they have scratches, but the grills are not dented and most importantly, the speakers aren't blown or stressed. They are also surprisingly portable, there is not clunky power supply to worry about and the speakers can be packed in any bag easily by inverting them vertically and wrapping the cords around them.
As I've said, my friend has had these speakers for a while, and every time I listened to them i was impressed. Whether i was sitting in front of them at normal volume, where they sound very spacious and the have no problem picking up the lows and the detailed highs. The flat bass driver is a very smart idea and put out smooth bass you won't be disappointed with. The other times they impress me is when he decides to turn them up, and they're able to fill a normal size room with sound you'll find yourself needing to yell over. They don't sound the best when are turned up but that's expected, besides, knowing these things will last a very long time you won't care.
Pros
Impressive sound for their size.
Easily portable
Loud
Durable as hell
Price
Cons
Don't sound the best when they are turned all the way up, but lyrics are still clear.
If you're looking for cheap computer speakers, these are the way to go. When I found out the price of these I was amazed, judging by there sound only I would think these were $50+ speakers. They are fantastic.
Customer Review: Solid construction and decent sound. Summary: 4 Stars
I bought these X-140 speakers to replace a cheap set of 2.1 speakers which started having hissing problems. While these don't have a subwofer, and they won't rattle the floorboards, the sound is still quite respectable. Highs are crisp, while the bass is clean and sufficiently robust to satisfy the needs of casual background music and occasional games of Battleship. Mid-range frequencies seem to be lacking something, so the sound is not quite perfect, but still better than one might expect in this price range.
I'm also impressed with how well these speakers distribute sound evenly throughout a small bedroom. There are no hot spots, and no discernible "sweet spot" which sounds better than any other. I even hear clear stereo separation while doing exercises on the floor. As an audio/visual technician for 12 years, I never heard professional equipment that distributed sound as evenly as these do.
I would advise anyone using new speakers of any type to go into your computer's audio settings and media player settings and set everything (EQ and effects) back to their defaults. The settings that worked with your old speakers may sound horrible on your new ones, so start with a clean slate and adjust the settings to your new speakers. Then adjust the speaker's built-in tone control for a little extra enhancement. You'll get the most out of these if you do so.
These speakers are about 10" tall, and about 4" wide, so they're not as small as they look in the photo. Their construction is beautifully solid, far superior to anything else I looked at in stores, even at twice the price. Overall they feel hefty and sturdy. The cables are of good quality. The knobs feel firm and operate smoothly. The front grilles are metal, not plastic. All the pieces fit together cleanly and snugly. From what I've seen these are by far the best speakers in this price range.
Customer Review: Better than expected Summary: 5 Stars
I've been looking for a new set of external speakers for my laptop, and these Logitech speakers were much better than what I expected. Previously, I was using unpowered speakers, which are OK for quiet background music. But even with the laptop volume on max, unpowered speakers are too soft for some webcasts and videos, forcing me to use headphones. Over the years, I've also used various powered speakers in the $10-$15 price range, and they've generally been "OK". But those models generally lack frequency response, especially bass response with the volume somewhat low. So, I decided to go up a notch and get these Logitech speakers, which are still very reasonably priced. Wow, what an improvement! They sound great, with crisp highs and clear, warm bass, even at low volumes. I'm currently using them at home, but I'm so delighted, I think I'm going to get a second pair for the office.
The only two things I can think of to be aware of if you're considering these speakers:
1) Size: They are a bit larger than typical PC speakers. Check the dimensions to make sure they'll fit comfortably in your space. They are definitely too big to fit under a monitor, for example, but they would be fine sitting on either side of a monitor. And, you don't want them behind anything since they sound best with a direct path to your ears.
2) Tone control: I'm not a fan of "tone" controls, which the Logitech speakers have, mainly because they don't work well in fine-tuning frequency response. I'd rather see a volume control only and equalize the sound via software controls. But the tone control is there, and setting it to the middle position doesn't seem to muck with the sound in a negative way.
Assuming the size of these speakers are OK for your situation, I'm sure you'll be happy with the sound. These are by far the best external PC speakers I've ever used.
Customer Review: Good Volume, Good forTalking, Okay for Music Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased 4 speaker sets in the price range of $25-$30. My intent is to find the best set for teachers to use in their classroom at this price range. Out of the 4 sets the Logitech LS21 2.1 Stereo Speaker System $30 was the only one I returned. The sound was okay, but the all the others were noticeably better.
Logitech S220 2.1 Speaker System (Black) - good sound, but if the max volume was any softer then it would not work well in a classroom. $24
Logitech X-140 2.0 Speakers - Loudest Volume level; Easiest hookup with only 2 speakers; base levels are okay without a subwoofer, but subwoofer would improve music; Best of the group for listening to someone talking. $27
Boston Acoustics Horizon MM220 Multimedia Speaker System (Midnight) - I would describe this set as being in the middle of the road compared to the 2 described above. Sound volume, music quality and talking quality are clearly in the middle.
My Recommendation - Depending on what you want to mostly use them for...
Music - Logitech S220
Talking and Volume - Logitech X-140
The Boston Acoustics Horizon MM220 has gone up in price on Amazon ($87) and is $38 on [...]. I would not pay that much. If I was going to spend that much I would purchase the Bose Companion 2 Series II at SamsClub for $60 plus tax. You can simultaneously hook up a computer and DVD/VCR and the sound is great.
Customer Review: Good and Cheap Summary: 5 Stars
I had an old cheap pair of 2/0 Yamaha Speakers about 15 years ago when I first started playing with computers. They were okay but just didn't cut the mustard. Later on I upgraded to a pair of the Karhmon Harmon Macintosh Ball speakers. A slight improvement but for 50$ but they were design over function. My main concern with these Logitech Speakers is that they would be similar in sound to the aforementioned speakers.
However after reading the convincing reviews here I gave it a shot and was not disappointed. Basically these are great speakers for those who want good sound yet do not want to disturb neighbors/co-workers/roommates etc. If you want more range and base, buy a 2/1 setup. If you want solid sounding speakers that you can crank up a little bit, these are fantastic.
They are semi-portable if you just put them back in the box they came in. The wire covers over the speakers are sturdy and do not give easily. The speakers also have a nice weight to them and do not tip over easily. My only quibble is the speakers are permanently connected to each other. But that is really minor and easy to work around.
I use these for my laptop in the living room and I have a Logitech 5/1 setup (Z-5300) for my work computer. No complaints. Solid weight, strong build quality and good sound all for 25$. Easily would recommend if you want good, cheap and don't want to rock the house.
If your an audiophile and you bought these, you should know better.
If your an audiophile and you are thinking about buying these, you should know better. It would be like a computer geek buying an HP off the shelf then complaining about the mother board options, video card, available slots, pre-installed software etc, etc.
