Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech VX Revolution Ergonomic Design Cordless 2.4 GHz Wireless Laser Mouse for Notebooks/Laptops/PCs with Hyper-Fast Scrolling

Customer Review: Great features, works on many surfaces
Summary: 4 Stars

I've owned this mouse for about a month now and it has been a great replacement for my previous Logitech wireless mouse. Some things that I like about this mouse:

- The USB receiver stores inside the mouse itself.
- Power turns on/off automatically depending on if your USB receiver is out/in the mouse.
- When you first pop the USB receiver out, a battery indicator shows you how much battery is left.
- The laser seems to work on almost all surfaces that my previous wireless laser mouse was not able to function on. (It didn't work on a glass top table in a hotel though.)
- The forward/back buttons are very handy when web browsing.
- Ergonomics are great as noted elsewhere but the forward/back button took a little getting used to.

One thing that the verdict is still out on:

- The infinity (or "non-click") mode of the scroll wheel takes some getting used to, but it's great for moving up and down those long pages on web forums, lengthy email chains and big spreadsheets. Sometimes, it is so sensitive that a little movement can cause a page to scroll. This can be annoying. Fortunately, there is a toggle switch on the mouse itself so you can turn that feature off. Mine remains on for now...

To summarize, this mouse is awesome and I love it. The reason why it is 4 star is because the price is a little high and I don't know that a lot of features are absolutely necessary for most users. Their "nice to haves" but you can live without them. In fact, when I'm at home and my laptop is docked and I use the el cheapo IBM corded laser mouse, I don't have a problem with it. That said, if I could afford two, then I would replace the corded IBM mouse. :)

As a final note, I travel a lot for work and this mouse has been in my laptop bag (btw, I use a Timbuk2 Commute, highly recommended) and it has been a great addition to my travel kit arsenal.

Customer Review: Sweet Little Rodent
Summary: 4 Stars

If you've used Logitech mice, you know most of the stuff you need to. The VX Revolution is a neat little mouse that is small enough to take with you, and large enough to replace a desktop mouse if you want to. It isn't one of those tiny travel mice though, so if space is limited in your laptop case you might want to consider something else.

Insert the included AA battery, plug in the tiny USB receiver, and you're off to the races. If you want to use many of the additional features, like horizontal scrolling, zooming, search button, or to set the speed and acceleration, you need to install the Setpoint software. The included CD has what you need for Windows. Mac users will need to download it from the internet.

When not in use the receiver tucks neatly away inside the mouse. When you put the receiver away it shuts the mouse off, and when you remove it, the mouse turns on. There is also a small power button, should you choose to leave the USB plugged into your PC. According to the power meter, the single AA battery will provide 120 days of use. Time will tell how accurate that is.

As far as price goes, you probably can get a mouse with comparable features for a lot less money, but if you don't want to screw around, you won't likely be disappointed with this product.

One little problem is easily corrected. When I used the mouse the first time, I found that scrolling was pathetically slow in some windows (IE6), and didn't work at all in others. What you have to do is go into Setpoint, choose scrolling options, select Internet Explorer, and uncheck the box to "allow Super Smooth Scrolling", and you're back where you should be. I hope this saves others from the frustration of having to search through the Knowledge Base, or calling tech support (which for Logitech mice is NOT toll-free).

So far, I am pleased with this purchase...

Customer Review: Worth EVERY penny!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using the original Microsoft Ballpoint mouse since they first became available in 1991! It didn't take up a lot of real estate and, most important, felt comfortable. I did not like version 2, but I've had a steady supply of version 1 thanks to eBay.

This May, I purchased a new desktop that came with an laser optical mouse with scroll wheel. I found he mouse mice required very little room to operate, and I liked the convenience of the scroll wheel. I didn't like dragging a cord, though, so I visited a few outlets and found I liked both the VX and the VX Nano. I got Nanos for my laptops, but found nothing beats the VX for my desktop.

I love the free spin, hyperfast gyro wheel. It lets me move through screens and directories with ease.

I particularly like the SetPoint software that allows me to configure the buttons in a huge variety of ways! It's taken me months to figure out how to set the buttons, but I've finally found an arrangement that makes effective use of all 5 buttons (and pressing down on the gyro wheel is still there to be activated).

I've assigned Ctrl-W to the magnify button behind the scroll wheel; one click and my current Firefox tab closes.

The two buttons on the side of the mouse are configured to move me forward and backward one web page. (backspace and Shft-backspace).

Moving the slider down reloads the current page. (F5)

Moving the slider up resets the current page to normal font size. (Ctrl-0) This last setting corrects the mouse's one annoyance. If the gyro wheel is spinning when a web page loads, the font will sometimes be made larger or smaller than normal. This provides an easy reset.

After purchasing a VX Nano for home, I decided I liked it so much that I got one for work, too.

The more I've used this mouse, the more I like it!

Customer Review: great hardware, lousy Mac driver
Summary: 4 Stars

The VX Revolution is the latest in a series of Logitech mice I have owned. As usual, the hardware is wonderful*, but if you are a Mac owner, do some internet research first - particularly on the Logitech forums (Logitech buried some of the most scathing remarks about the Mac driver when they "upgraded" their forums). Fortunately, I'm still using Panther rather than Tiger and don't have an Intel Mac, so at least the driver didn't crash my computer. But the new driver** is still buggy and didn't properly assign keystrokes to one of the buttons. And keeping more than one Logitech mouse connected to my computer (e.g. via a hub) confused the Logitech driver. From what I read on the Logitech forums, I conclude that Logitech is uninterested in delivering a working driver to Mac owners, since Mac owners have been castigating the driver for at least a year with no real response from Logitech. The VX Revolution works well with ControllerMate ($15 shareware) on my machine (Panther):D ControllerMate also runs my MX510 and allows me to keep both mice connected to my computer simultaneously. I gather from the Logitech forums that many ppl are also happy with Steermouse ($20), which requires Tiger. So if you are a Mac owner, figure on spending an extra $15-$20 for a working driver.***

*I wish the mouse would power down to preserve battery life when the computer sleeps or is off, though
**be sure to uninstall old Logitech drivers before trying to use this mouse. The presence of an out-of-date driver makes it impossible to click on anything. If you remove the out-of-date driver, at least you can left-click.
***since the Logitech driver runs all of Logitech's mice, figure on the extra money if you purchase any of Logitech's newer mice that require their new buggy driver. Why Logitech doesn't license a working driver from one of the shareware developers is beyond me.

Customer Review: Does this mouse work for anyone?

I have been trying to use the VX Revolution on my Mac G4 desktop. It freezes up so much I cannot give it a rating at all. I have a wacom tablet & mouse also connected; I previously used Kensington TurboMouse Pro (not wireless; I have removed its mouseware pref pane). The wacom mouse leaves a lot to be desired - I'm spoiled after the Turbomouse functionality (and simplicity). When the VX works it is great; the setup and functional assignment is not as simple/elegant as Turbomouse, but hey, if it works. Frequently, I'll move the mouse, and the cursor doesn't respond - but the cpu goes into hyperdrive (evidenced by MenuMeters) for several MINUTES. I have the latest LCC software, fully charged battery, don't know what else to check. I'll move it to my laptop, and try it out there, but I really wanted this functionality for my desktop. I haven't seen any other posting describing this problem, and I would love to find a cause (& cure!). As it is, I cannot use it at all on the G4 desktop. I know it is highly acclaimed, and the design is very sleek, & ergonomic - all the more frustrating for me! Best of luck to you.
Update: 6/12/2007
This mouse does not work reliably on any of my Macs. It will work alright for a short while, then just stops responding altogether. I see on the Logitech forum there are a lot of unhappy users experiencing trouble, apparently with Logitech software, on several different models of mice/trackballs. One poster in particular complains of ongoing problems and indifference from customer service. He recommends third party mouse driver software called Steermouse. I tried it, but it did not make a difference for me - the VX is still unresponsive. I should note that I do use a Logitech cordless optical trackman. The trackball is kind of imprecise, but the software does work.
