Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech VX Revolution Ergonomic Design Cordless 2.4 GHz Wireless Laser Mouse for Notebooks/Laptops/PCs with Hyper-Fast Scrolling

Customer Review: Very nice overall; problems with middle click.
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been eyeing this mouse for a while, and finally got one on Black Friday. After using it for a month, there are a few things that are most noticeable when using this mouse:

Good:
-The VX is a bit bigger than most notebook mice, which means you can actually hold it comfortably without contorting your hand into grotesque shapes.
-The free spinning wheel is great for scrolling through long documents, and provides an intuitive, kinetic feeling for how fast and far you're going. My one gripe is that you have to flip the mouse around to slide a small switch on the bottom in order to switch between free-spinning mode and normal "click-wheel" mode. I wish that Logitech had put the switch on the side of the mouse, near the thumb.
-The wireless receiver works great, and I've experienced no lag, even while playing first-person shooters. Once you get about 10 feet away (plenty for me) from the receiver, though, it starts getting a bit erratic.
-The mouse is well-balanced, and the weight distribution feels "just right" in the hand: right in the center of the mouse.

Bad:
-To middle-click on the mouse wheel, it takes quite a bit of precise downward force, or else the wheel starts turning instead of clicking down. I've solved this personally just by remapping the wheel-tilt to middle click, but this is an issue to consider if you actually want to use the tilt feature for something. It's unfortunate, because the middle-click features so heavily in today's applications, like tab management in Firefox.
-The search button is pretty useless, since it's placed in an awkward to reach position right behind the scroll wheel. I've mapped it to "Hide/Show Desktop".
-The ergonomic contouring of the mouse forces you to wrap your hand in a particular way around the mouse (there are slight groves for each of your fingers, it's very subtle.), and if you don't hold it just that way, it feels a little bit off. But I've been using it just fine nonetheless.)

Bottom line: Overall, the VX Revolution is a sleek performer, and continues Logitech's tradition of making quality computer accessories. The design looks clean and professional, and if you can work around the middle-click issue, which is the only real issue with this mouse, then you won't be disappointed.

Note for Linux users: You can use OlliSalonen's BTNX to map and configure the all the buttons on the mouse, and it's a lot more flexible than the included, Windows-only SetPoint software. The mouse works great on my distribution, Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10

Customer Review: Awesome, except...
Summary: 1 Stars

This is the very best mouse I have ever owned. I love everything about it, except one thing - it doesn't work.

As for the features, this mouse rocks! I gotta hand it to Logitech, they make beeeauuutiful products. They really think them through, and each feature is carefully crafted. I consider them unmatched in the creative design department.

The problem is, their build quality just sucks. It seems that every logitech item I buy is a wonderful, passionate affair - that ends very quickly. I love it, use it, and then a few weeks later, it breaks.

As for what I like about this Logitech model - oh, where to start!?

- on/off switch (you laugh, but a lot of mice don't have this, and the batteries run down faster)
- battery indicator; you can tell when the battery is getting low
- infra-red eye; better than the laser eye, uses less battery too
- very resposive; it got 'twitchy' at one point, but then I just cleaned the eye (got a bit dusty), and it went right back to normal
- great comfy shape; some say it's small, but I think it's the perfect size and feel
- slick, classy look
- small, thin USB antenna; does not get in the way of other USB devices
- USB antenna stores neatly inside the mouse
- one-click search button; calibrate to your fav search engine, highlight any text, click button, it takes you to search results instantly; sweet!

In short, I thought this was going to be the perfect mouse for me. I was HAPPY to pay the inflated price for such a gem. I got it home, used it, loved it, and really thought we were going to live happily ever after...

Then, quite unexpectedly, it just stopped working. Just stopped.

Okay, I said, don't panic, I said. It's a super-duper mouse, and worth a little extra effort. Quick trip back to the store, and I had a replacement in hand; even trade. Welcome home.

And then about 3 weeks later, that one stopped working too.

AARRRGG! What is it with this Logitech stuff!? Someone is not doing their job! Their design department gets an A++ in my book, I really could not be happier. But their engineers/builders? They must be out to lunch! It passes all tests with perfect 10's, except for the most important. And sorry, but even a perfect 10 x 10 x 10 x zero is still ZERO.

I very much wanted to love this mouse and give it 5 stars, but alas, it is now just a fancy, little (not to mention, expensive) paperweight. Very, very sad.

Customer Review: Spin doesn't work well
Summary: 3 Stars

After using this mouse for a day, I think i'm going to return it.

Pros:
Mouse feels solid and well built
Good tracking
Good ergonomics, excluding thumb button placement
Nice click feeling from the buttons

So it tracks well and feels nice enough to use. Why am I getting rid of it? Well, there are a lot of issues with this mouse.

Cons:
Scroll wheel doesn't work properly
Weak battery will require constant changing
Thumb button placement is akward
Bloated drivers

The dealbreaker for me is the scroll wheel. From all the marketing fluff, you would think that the scroll wheel is the central feature of this mouse. Well, it just doesn't work. If I scroll fast enough to get the free moving scroll wheel in motion, the pages don't fly by, in fact they slow down to a crawl. Not only does the scrolling slow down, my year and a half computer becomes bogged down for a minute, and I lose complete control of the active window. When using the normal click scrolling, I just can't seem to get the right scrolling speed. If I use the software to get the correct sensitivity/speed for webpages, one click will jump 2 pages at a time in a pdf. If I use the configuration software for acceptable scrolling in pdf files, using the scroll wheel on web pages is excruciatingly slow. In short, the scroll wheel just doesn't work right.

Battery life after a full charge is reported as 14 days by the driver software, but it's really more like 3 days unless you religiously use the on/off switch. If the mouse runs out of batteries, you're out of luck until the recharge is complete, because the battery is non removable.

I had to really stretch my thumb to reach the side scroll wheel and back button. I have average size male hands, so I suspect that many other people will notice the same problem. For an ergonomic mouse, I find the button placement questionable.

Drivers took at least 5 minutes to install. I can install turbo tax quicker. These are mouse drivers, what gives? I suspect the bloated drivers have something to do with the poor performance of the scroll wheel. Come on logitech, hire a decent programmer or two.

My overall feeling is that this is a nice piece of hardware hampered by poor drivers. I can live with the charger and awkward button placement, but even cheapo mice for 1/10th the price have better functioning scroll wheels.

Customer Review: Not just for notebooks anymore
Summary: 4 Stars

I got a nice late-model Mac Pro and a new copy of Elements 6. Nice big screen, many photos and lots of tiny little pixels to deal with. As nice as the Mac's multi-touch pad is, nothing beats a mouse for exacting work and so I went here looking for one. My first choice was the Mighty Mouse, but that sure had a lot of negative opinions about its reliability and so the search went on.

The VX had the buttons that seemed just right for Photoshop/Elements work, had good reviews and a $20 rebate that brought its total cost to $26 (at that time). Hard to beat, so I went for it.

The rebate thing needs some words. Having to copy the invoice, cut out the bar code, access and print out a form, get an envelope and a stamp...it is all obviously to discourage people from bothering with all this and this saves the company money. It just all seems sort of cheap and unprofessional.

I like the heavy spinning wheel. It makes all other ways to scroll seem so slow. Modifying its features is not automatic like the bigger and more expensive MX model, but it was fine for me. If I worked at a desk all day on Photoshop or other digital media projects, then maybe the MX might prove better. Of course, then a 30" monitor, tablets and all sorts of stuff would be desirable as well.

I thought bluetooth would be better, and Macs come with that, but my Mac has two USB ports and so it is not a big deal either way for me. The little receiver is easy enough to deal with and turns the mouse off when you stow it in its little storage slot. The tracking and precision are just fine.

The VX is marketed as a notebook mouse. It is maybe a little smaller than some, and the receiver storage makes it easy to travel with. Still, there is no magic notebook enhancement.

There is always lots of talk about the size and ergonomics of computer mice. They are all made by companies that research all this and people adapt anyway. It is very cleverly shaped and is comfortable for me and likely will be for you as well.

Windows software comes on an included disk, but the Mac stuff must be downloaded. Kind of odd, but it works.

I gave the VX four stars because of the zoom switch being too stiff and not really smooth. I have been working it and it does seem to be getting a little better. Four and a half stars would have been fair, but there is no option for that and there is still the rebate thing, so four it is.

Customer Review: Mice basics... Content!
Summary: 4 Stars

After monitoring this mouse for quite some time, i finally decided to buy it when amazon decreased the price and offered a $10 discount on a future purchase. I had a Microsoft Wireless laser mouse 6000, which was alot bulkier, and inpractical for a laptop user (i use the macbook pro, with windows installed). But my main complaint involved the mouse's sensitivity. Yes, i have toyed around with the tracking and scrolling speed to no avail.
Upon receiving the VX, that was the first thing i paid attention to, and in that respect, it is excellent. The mouse really does bound to my finger's command, taking the cursor where i want it to be. Now for the so-called "Revolution", which is really no revolution at all.
My previous mouse had a fast scrolling speed, to flip through articles and such (which i need), but not as fast as the VX. But you wouldn't want super fast scrolling, otherwise you'll miss the pieces you want to read. So really, its useless, unless you have super fast brain processing to match this mouse's scrolling speed. Again, this was not the main factor which drew me to buy the mouse. I liked its overall size, mobility, and design (which like all new mice on the market offer some sort of ergonometric feel). Although it seems alittle cheaply built as opposed to the sturdier microsoft, it is really ok in that sense.
The options (Logitech Control Center) are myriad, offering complete control over the buttons on the mouse. I myself use the zoom, back and forward buttoms to open up applications and documents i use alot (like itunes, specific word documents). The search button, placed in the center of the mouse is helpful as well, allowing you to highlight a word or sentence, then searching it thru google, yahoo, etc. The default opens up spotlight (a local search engine for apple to search for anything on the computer). The problem is, after i set up the options, the spotlight does not open when i want it to anymore (when i manually click its feature on the notebook desktop). I will have to find out the reason why. I do know, by experience, logitech software tends to screw up computer applications. Overall, discovering and adjusting the options in the control center is fairly easy. Took me a few minutes to acquaint myself, but now im ok.
If you're in the market for a "laptop" mouse, this one is worth checking. You will be impressed with its sensitivity, the control options, and its overall size and feel in your hand.
