Logitech paid a lot of attention to detail when they were designing the VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks, and it all shows.
Even the packaging is nice. The mouse and receiver are on display, but they're not sealed up in that indestructible plastic that requires a knife to get at the product, and risk damage. The box also includes a nice little black nylon and net case to store the mouse when you drop it in your laptop bag. There is a compact adapter cable if you want to use the cordless mouse with a desktop PC; just plug one end into a USB port in the back of your tower and pop the receiver into the other end. Finally, there is the SetPoint 4.0 software that allows you to customize the mouse for your needs.
The mouse is a good size; small enough to carry around with the laptop, but not so tiny that it gives you a hand cramp. It fits perfectly in the palm and all the buttons are easy to reach.
On the underside there is an on/off switch so you can save battery life when not in use. When the laptop is on, a green light on the mouse lets you know if it's switched on or off. When the laptop is off, the mouse automatically turns off, too.
A recessed release button pops open the battery compartment, which is as well thought out as every other part of this mouse. The mouse runs on two easily obtainable AAA batteries. Using the battery life meter that comes with the Set Point software, I see that I have 170 days of expected battery life remaining.
The mouse works great right out of the box with standard left and right click buttons, and scrolling wheel. With the SetPoint software installed, it can be customized so that a button behind the scrolling wheel gives one click access to your favorite search engine, email, MS Office applications, Media Player, or however you want to set it up. Additional buttons on the left side of the mouse can be customized for page up/down, volume up/down, zoom in/out, or keystroke assignment, You can set vertical and horizontal scrolling speeds. There is even a tab to set up gaming use preferences.
As others have mentioned, the receiver is quite small. Once inserted into the laptop's USB port, it protrudes only about a quarter of an inch; just enough to let you comfortably remove it again. Since this receiver, unlike some others I've tried, is so small that it doesn't get in the way, you can leave it in the PC indefinitely. If you do want to remove it from the USB port, there is a special storage slot for the receiver inside the battery compartment. A special red button pops the receiver out of the storage slot when you're ready to put it back to work in the laptop.
This mouse is packed with nice touches and useful features. Highly recommended!

After being disappointed several times by Bluetooth models, I decided to give this one a try. Strangely enough, the primary reason I selected this mouse was because of the tiny receiver; I chafed at the thought of having a monstrously large piece of cheap plastic sticking out of my MacBook. Shallow, I know, but at least I admit it. Overall, that aesthetic quirk of mine ended up being my most beneficial flaw, as the VX Nano is the most incredibly reliable, accurate, and practical mouse I've ever owned.
The box contains the mouse, a carrying case, the receiver, batteries, and Windows software. As noted in previous reviews, Mac users such as myself have to journey to the Logitech website to download software for the mouse -- though it's hardly required, as it will work as soon as you plug in the receiver.
Since I'm in print/graphic design, I was particularly worried about its tracking abilities. My fears were groundless, as this mouse is about as accurate as they come. It offers pinpoint control, so working on those fine details in photos or layouts is a breeze. The mouse clicks with a good feel and sound, and the medium size offers more control than the diminutive Bluetooth models on the market; additionally, you won't feel as though you're moving a paperweight around the desk, grunting all the while.
One feature that really blew me away, however, was the hyper-fast or free-spin mode of the scroll wheel. At first, I considered this a novelty, but quickly grew to believe it to be one of the mouse's best features. This is particularly true when I find myself working on a large document. The free-spin allows me to zoom through pages in record time. If you work on large layouts or documents, or if you have the patience of a two-year-old doing the potty dance (both apply to me), you'll love this feature.
Battery life is incredible, and that's a great bonus. Indeed, I had given up wireless peripherals in the past because they seemed to use enough juice to power Ohio. The VX Nano, however, is a sipper; in seven months of very heavy use, I've changed the batteries once. The receiver fits snugly in any USB port, and I've never even bothered to take it out when transporting my laptop. The back/forward page features are convenient, though I have found they don't always work.
Indeed, all the mouse's features are not available to Mac users such as myself. This hasn't concerned me, as most are things I would likely never use. So, when I consider all the other factors, I have to give the mouse the highest possible rating; Mac users need not fear this product at all.
One caveat: the mouse will wake up your Mac from sleep mode. I can thank my cat for discovering this. If the mouse is placed where it's likely it will be bumped, you might consider turning it off before putting your Mac to sleep. Or, you might just consider putting up baby gates to protect it from felines. Your choice.

My three criteria for a good mouse is the package ( this Builds Expectations), the Manual ( This Guides Expectations), and finally the Peformance(Shows wether the expectations were correct, or if they were not met or were exceeded, and if exceeded or not met, then by how much); Well the VXNANO excels in all 3.I took this out on a road test to several different sites, and found nothing but love for the
beast.Outside of the obvious precision point function, which has once again eschewed the crazy blinking red light in favour of a white light laser, the four component functions on the mouse work well. And, I found they work with or without the Setpoint and Desk top software, although
the units are defined differently. For example, when within a browser, left and right page turns work fine on any number of portables that I tried.The search button doubles as a scroll unit when not set up. But after the software is installed, wow, the unit can search, and open
features as defined in Setpoint for other Logitech Mouses.Plus the defining unit of this mouse is the smaller than small USB plug; it nestles safely in the undercarriage of the mouse and can be retrieved and set up in any USB port. There is even a USB docking station provided for you so you can use the mouse with PC's although this is kind of superfluous, since you can connect to any USB port at all, on any laptop, any PC, and work straight away.Sleek and portable, this is a nice compromise between a teensy mouse and a large mouse, and provides little distraction as you effortlessly glide over the pages of work, and look through the mountains of internet research which you can now access at the click of a Button.

I have been in the position to show and recommend this mouse to many people. I always try and make a fair set of recommendations based on what people like and want, but the number of people who go for the VX Nano has just amazed me. And all the features I like on the unit have been the reasons that these other people take them up.
To be fair, the Mouse is for a certain size person. Handsize plays a significant part in Mouse choice, as does if the person can use their hands fully or not ( Hand Injuries, and Stroke victims), so I recommend smaller size mouses, or I sometimes Recommend a larger mouse like the Corded G9 Logitech that works well with the Office system.
Today I had an amazing sight where a person whose first choice was a MS 5000 Platinum, went for the VX Nano, and loved the unit, and also the extra USB plug which the used for their IPOD. I am sure there will be better units coming along, I just hope I get a shot at reviewing them.
Customer Review: Best mouse for a Netbook PC

It's small, but more convenient for Netbook users. The biggest complaint about most Netbooks is the keyboard and the touchpad. Some manufacturer have addressed the keyboard by coming up with 10 inch screen with larger keys. The touchpad is another thing. Bigger keys force them to use smaller touchpad. I prefer a mouse for the simpler user interface. Drag and drop doesn't require me to click my left hand (I'm right handed). The small touchpad really makes this unbearable. The touchpad on a Netbook really serves a couple purposes. These are clicking webpage buttons and placing a cursor to location. The Netbook is a light use item; really used for internet surfing, e-mail, and lighter text editing. I use my touchpad for when I will only need to do simple thing. Other than that I tend to use the Nano and turn off the touchpad. I tend to move the cursor when I'm doing a lot of typing accidentally with the close quarters of the keyboard and touchpad area.
Anyway geting back to the Nano. It's small enough to fit in a pocket if you want to take it along with your Netbook. In meeting the first requirement for Netbook use, it is small. However, when in use, you don't feel like you have a compromised from a full size mouse. I have the full size Revolution VX. It's an amazing mouse. Best mouse I've used. The quick scrolling is a feature that simply makes navigation through long documents a joy. You can quick scan as the document rolls by. And as you see where you want to stop, the wheel is so precise that is stops on a dime. Even if you let the stop scroll past your destination, you attain a feel for the scroll where you wheel back up and hit the brakes when you see where you want to stop. The only difference from my Revolution is the thumbwheel and the location of the back and forward wheel buttons. I never use the thumbwheel, mostly because the back and forward buttons are thumb operated and just above the wheel. These buttons on the Nana are index finger operated. What I like is these butting are so well designed that I've never mistakenly hit either of them when left clicking or navigated the in the wrong direction. Some have complained about the size of the wheel as too small. For me this is actually a blessing. Left to right scrolling by side bumping the wheel is much easier than on my Revolution. With a Netbook a simple way to sidescroll on a mouse is a great convenience with larger webpages not fitting onto a 10 inch screen width. This thing is a joy. I've had it for over 3 months and I've never had a problem or changed out a battery. The battery is right now at 75% so, I don't think I'll have to change them out for a while.
It's a great mouse for any Notebook user; both small and powerful with features. For a Netbook user, it's a perfect match. Put your Nano in your pocket and your PC in a slipcase. On the go with few compromises from a larger Notebook with all the gadget in a heavy bag.

The VX Nano is an excellent mouse. I am currently using it and I am very happy with it. Other reviewers have done a great job at listing pros and cons.
I am writing this review because the VX Nano is now replaced at the top of the line by the new Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX. I tried both and stayed with the VX Nano. However, some people may prefer the Anywhere MX. I have a more complete review of the Anywhere MX on that product's page, but here is a copy of the main differences between the 2 products:
- The VX Nano is quite a bit lighter (by 30-40%) and it makes a noticeable difference. The Anywhere MX is a bit heavier to begin with, but more importantly, it uses AA batteries vs. AAA for the VX Nano. Note that despite the larger batteries (about 2x capacity), The SetPoint software is predicting ~100 days for the Anywhere's AA and ~150 for the VX' AAA, so I guess the new "dark field" laser uses 2-3x more power. I thought of using AA-AAA adapters to keep the weight difference down, but that would drop the battery life to <2 months. For me, that was the biggest deciding factor with the next bullet.
- The VX Nano is quite a bit cheaper. Now that it's not the "best" Logitech laptop mouse, its price has dropped quite a bit. While the Anywhere MX price is pegged close to MSRP, the VX Nano's price is oscillating up to 40% cheaper than the Anywhere MX. That's a big difference.
- The Anywhere MX can be used on any surface. In comparison, the VX Nano can only be used on most surfaces. It's still extremely competent and works on fabric, many shiny surfaces... anything you'll normally find in a home or an office, and is much better than old red LED-based mice. It does not, however, work on transparent surfaces. If that's important, then the Anywhere MX is the only option.
- The VX Nano has the back/forward buttons on the top vs the Anywhere MX on the side for the more traditional thumb access. Advantage Anywhere MX here. Those top buttons on the VX Nano are not great and I think that was one of the main complaints. I am glad Logitech listened.
- The on/off button on the Anywhere MX is easier to use (flap to slide vs. hold for 3 seconds).
- Both mice get a pouch. The VX Nano has a mesh pouch that's a bit baggy. The Anywhere MX has a tight smooth pouch. It's a near tie.
- The VX Nano comes with a USB extension with holder to use with a desktop. The Anywhere MX doesn't. Not a big deal IMHO.
- The Anywhere MX has the new Nano receiver that can support several devices. The VX Nano has the "old" one. They are the same size though and behave identically with a single device. In particular, there is no pairing and initial latency issues as seen on Bluetooth devices.
