Customer Review: Almost perfect and better than anything else I tried
Summary: 4 Stars

My old MS laptop mouse died so after reading reviews and 'feeling out' various mice at local stores to see how they felt in my hand, I went with the Logitech VX Nano. While my IBM laptop is primarily used as a desktop replacement, I wanted a mouse that could easily be taken along for the ride without taking up excessive briefcase space. Some of the extra functions, like the free-wheeling scroll wheel option, are frankly superfluous to me and not used with any frequency so my primary comments relate more to the ease of use and the functionality of the mouse for normal usage.

Pros:
* Works smoothly! This does not feel like a cheap mouse that will easily break like some on the market. It has a quality feel with positive tactile feedback.
* Gotta love the Nano receiver! Other than the fear that someday I might lose it, this little receiver is hardly noticeable! It fits one of the USB slots and I can easily transport the laptop with it in place without fear of knocking it loose or breaking it off.
* Not too small for the way I use a mouse. I have fairly big hands (I'm 6 ft. tall) and while the mouse is not designed to fit in the palm of my hand, it is very comfortable to use. I will say that I generally configure my mice to move faster with shorter hand movements than most people or the normal Windows default settings. So I do not need to move the mouse far to reach any destination on my screen. If you prefer a slower, longer setting for your mouse, you may find the comfort different for bigger hands, but for my use it is perfectly comfortable.

Cons:
* Occasionally the receiver does not seem to pick up button pushes even if it is picking up mouse movement or the scroll wheel. The IBM USB is on the left hand side and the mouse is on the right, often about 4 feet away. While generally this works fine, on occasion I will have to press the mouse button a couple times to get the receiver to register a command. Again, this is not a problem when moving the mouse or moving the scroll wheel, only if I push the left or right button to send a command. I can easily solve this by simply moving the mouse a bit further left (closer to the USB). And if I have the mouse entirely on the left hand side of the laptop I can be 10 feet away and it works fine. There is some 'dead zone' apparently where I have occasional interference and only on button pushes! But fairly uncommon and easily corrected by moving the mouse a bit.
* I admit to liking Logitech products. Their software occasionally leaves a bit to be desired. But I finally need to grouse about Logitech's apparent need to overly market themselves via their software. Unless you control what the software loads when you install your Logitech product, you will get unnecessary marketing hype and more media software from Logitech that, at least for me, I do not need or want. Come on, guys. You are a very well recognized brand. You make generally excellent products. Keep the software simple & effective and eliminate all the extra dross that you seem to clog things up with. Or at least make it 'opt in' by default rather than requiring the user to 'opt out' every time. There is enough junk slowing down my PC without your help, thank-you!

Customer Review: Not enough superlatives! (One problem with a MacBook)

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
If you've ever had to replace your computer mouse, then you know that Logitech covers a wide range of the market, from wireless to corded, from tiny to ergonomic, from no-frills to bells-and-whistles. The VX Nano Cordless was designed specifically for use with laptops, although it can be used on desktops.

The "Nano" refers not to the size of the mouse (it is *not* one of those ultra-portable mini mice) but of the wireless USB transmitter. When plugged in, the transmitter extends a mere 1/4 inch; you can leave it attached, slip your notebook into your case, and carry it away without worrying about snapping it off. If you choose not to leave it attached, the mouse itself has a storage compartment underneath that locks in place so you don't lose it. The mouse itself is 3 3/4 inches long, with contoured, rubberized sides for a comfortable grip. The mouse might prove to be too small for large hands, although most people won't want anything larger for their laptops. It beats the mini mouse I have and rarely use.

The tracking sensitivity of the mouse is excellent, and the scrolling feature is lightning quick. Although you can plug in the Nano and start using it right out of the box, you need to download the installation software to take advantage of the more advanced features such as internet search (really cool!) and browser back/forward at a touch. (Mac users have to download the appropriate installation software at the Logitech site, while Windows users can use the enclosed CD.)

The VX Nano comes with two AAA batteries, a soft case, a Windows installation CD, and an adapter for desktop use. The adapter is primarily for computers that do not have a USB connector at desk level; it consists of a USB connector at the end of a cord, with a port for the transmitter. The port is lightweight and can be easily skewed by accident, but its flat bottom keeps it from tipping over. I have an older Mac desktop, with a low-speed USB port on the keyboard, and I was able to plug the transmitter directly into the keyboard to use the mouse.

This device works as well on my MacBook as it does on a Windows laptop. Going online to download the Mac driver doesn't take any longer than it does to slip a CD into the drive and install from there. The only flaw I discovered occurred when I opened the back of the mouse while the transmitter was still plugged into my laptop's USB port, which turned off the mouse power; my laptop displayed a message that it needed to be rebooted, and the screen was completely frozen, disabling the normal restart/shut down menus. I learned quickly that I had to remove the transmitter *before* opening the storage/battery door.

I own two other Logitech mice, but this is by far my favorite. However, no-nonsense laptop users who plan to navigate documents only might find this mouse too pricey. I, however, have already packed mine in my laptop case, where it will travel from home to work and back again.

Customer Review: Despite it's size, the VX Nano is the best mouse you've ever used
Summary: 5 Stars

i first came across the nano when helping my sister pick out a new mouse for her laptop. my girlfriend's mom had the revolution which i thought was a pretty decent mouse at the time, but the nano had just come out and seemed to be a small little upgrade from the revolution so my sister went w/ the nano.

my first impressions were not the greatest. the mouse is small. that's just about anyone's first thought when seeing and touching it, and it's hard to see anything other than that at first. i use a logitech mx 1000 on my computer, which is by all accounts a huge mouse. but it's comfy and roomy, and my favorite mouse to date. but shortly thereafter, my girlfriend got a nano for her laptop, so i was forced into using it fairly regularly. w/in weeks i found it almost impossible to use my mx 1000.

the nano is lightening quick and more responsive than any other mouse i've ever used. even cranking up the sensitivity/pointer speed on the mx 1000 leaves it feeling sluggish.

the size of the nano quickly became a non issue. once you use it a few times, your hand adjusts to the size. my hands aren't freak show huge, but they are on the larger side of things(the only reference i can think of is that i can palm a basketball) and the nano fits just fine in my hands.

out of the box the buttons aren't configured the best (having the middle button change programs, and NOT act as a middle button), but they are all fully configurable. once set up properly the mouse really shines. having the middle button as an actual button, and not a wheel click, is a luxury i didn't know i wanted until i had it. again, going back to my mx 1000 is a clumsy affair.

the scroll wheel, in either mode, outshines all others i've used as well. the frictionless is a great mode when you want to jump to the top or bottom of a document/web page quickly. it's a huge leap from the old up/down scroll buttons.

the receiver is almost comically small. it's ron popeil "set it and forget it" small. in either a laptop of a desktop it's just nice to have a receiver plugged into your usb port that you don't have to worry about getting caught on.

the one negative i could find in the nano is that it doesn't have rechargeable batteries in it. but as a "portable" mouse i can understand that there is no rechargeable base to be found. toss in two aaa rechargeable batteries of your own and you're all set. or use regular batteries, it doesn't really matter, because the battery life in this mouse is ridiculous. like six months of 10+ hours a day of use ridiculous. the logitech software will keep track, in days, of the remaining battery life, and i've found it underestimates as well. i've gotten down to three days of life and stayed at three days for... three days. this may be the most energy efficient piece of technology i've ever used.

all in all, as weird as it is to gush over a mouse, this mouse is worth gushing over. it's ideal for laptops or desktops and outclasses everything else available. unless you've got shaq sized hands, i cannot see anyone being anything less than happy w/ this mouse. i wouldn't recommend any other. great work logitech.

Customer Review: As good as they get. You'll like it.

Different folks have different ideas of what a computer mouse should feel like in the hand, how many buttons it should have, what those buttons should do, and how well the mouse tracks to the screen. Then there are people (like me) who don't think of a computer mouse as a gadget, but as an extension of the computer screen itself. For these people, how well the device integrates with the computer is more important than all the bells and whistles that have been engineered into the device itself.

This mouse, as an integrating module to a laptop, is wonderful. It's not too small, fits into the cup of the hand nicely (and I have big hands) and responds admirably to movements, clicks, gestures, and scrolls.

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1420 - a moderately popular laptop -- running Vista Home Premium with 3 Gig of main memory. Vista did not recognize the mouse immediately, so I downloaded the Logitech drivers from their web site. The mouse immediately came into its own.

My previous mouse on this machine was a Microsoft wireless optical device. It worked well, and I like the fact that it only took one AA battery, and that it was energy efficient. But it was larger than the Logitech mouse and its dongle-receiver was always in the way. If I accidentally tapped the receiver, I'd lose communication with the mouse. Then I had to reset the receiver, or unplug it, and it became quite a distraction. And because the Inspiron 1420 has its USB ports on the side, I was finding myself messing too much with trying to resolve the issue.

I was attracted to the Logitech because the receiver promised to be small enough so that it didn't stick out of the side, and could remain in the USB port undisturbed while in transit. I looked around to see if maybe I could just purchase the USB receiver, (because I liked the feel of the MS Mouse and its tracking), but finally just bought the Logitech mouse outright. It was more expensive than the MS Mouse, but maybe -- I thought -- it would be worth it.

Boy! Was it ever worth it!

* The laser mouse tracking is infinitely better than the MS Mouse.

* The size of the mouse -- a little smaller than the MS Mouse -- is a perfect fit for my hand, and still be small enough to fit in my pocket when traveling.

* The small USB receiver works in all the USB ports on both sides of the Inspiron (something that the Microsoft Mouse did not do) and is indeed small enough so that I don't have to remove it when moving the machine around.

Finally, I like the fact that the software tells me the power level of the mouse itself, so that I can determine if the problem communicating might be a weak battery level. It uses two AA batteries (as opposed to one in the MS Mouse) but they are neatly placed so that they seem to take up less room than the MS Mouse. Most importantly, they're designed so that they will only need to be replaced once a year.

All told, for my uses, this mouse is as good as it gets. I really like it, and I highly recommend it. It comes with a pretty good warranty (two years) and it seems to be more solidly constructed than the Microsoft Mouse.

Customer Review: Outstanding mouse, control software could use some work.

I recently had purchased a Kensington SlimBlade Media Presenter mouse; I'm a university professor and give six lectures a week. I'm constantly on the go with my MacBook Pro, between my home and my office, and my office and various classrooms and lecture halls on campus. I wanted to reduce the number of gadgets I have to carry by consolidating my presentation clicker and mouse into one device. What a mistake... I returned the SlimBlade today, and got the Logitch VX Nano instead.

The Logitech VX Nano is simply excellent. It fits my hand very well, and is easy to hold and move with the contoured sides. It's very natural to hold between my thumb and ring finger with my index and middle finger on the left and right buttons. The side surfaces of the SlimBlade were so narrow that it was always a struggle to hold the mouse in a comfortable position where my fingers weren't going over the front of the body of the mouse. The best thing was to simply rest my hand on top of it, but then I would run afoul of the overly soft buttons it had.

The buttons on the VX Nano have a positive feel, firm and responsive, yet not too hard. The buttons on the SlimBlade where so soft that I found myself accidentally pressing them just by resting my fingers on the mouse. While I have large hands for my height, they're not so large that I can't use a notebook size mouse as my primary mouse with ease.

My only gripe is the control panel software could be better thought out. It brings up a separate application rather than simply changing settings directly in System Preferences. The settings are also a bit obtuse; you're required to always have a "right click" assigned to one of the buttons somewhere on the mouse at all times. So when you're trying to set application specific settings, typically for the right button, you have to reprogram one of the other buttons somewhere on the mouse to be a right-click before you can reprogram the right mouse button. This is kind of a pain, because I like to have right-click in Safari set to open links in a new tab. So then I have to change some other button as well, which then makes those buttons inconsistent with the way they behave globally or in other applications.

I would also like to see the configuration application offer 'chording', where you can click multiple buttons at once to increase the number of options you have when you click the mouse. At least two other input device makers have drivers that offer that feature; it's about time Logitech included it in theirs as well.

In summary, the VX Nano is an excellent notebook mouse. It is solidly constructed, well designed, and has a good positive feel during even demanding use, such as when retouching images in Photoshop, or drawing diagrams in OmniGraffle Pro. I'm very happy with this purchase. If you're like me and are constantly mobile, use a notebook mouse as your primary input device, and have high standards of performance and quality in the products you purchase, the VX Nano should serve you well.
