Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech V450 Nano Cordless Laser Mouse for PC and MacCustomer Review: almost perfect Summary: 4 Stars
The only bad thing about the Logitech V450 Nano is that the size will likely take some getting used to.
I was in the market for a laptop mouse after getting my new Asus Core i7. I wanted a mouse that could be placed with the same degree of freedom as the laptop itself. I decided on this mouse due to the low-profile USB transceiver, the no-nonsense ergonomics, and because I have long since been in love with their MX line of mice (I owned first a 510 and later added two 518s, one for my parents and one for my second comp.)
The only thing that gave me doubts were some comments about the wireless range of this mouse. I believe one reviewer said the mouse had response issues when placed on the opposite side of the laptop from the USB transceiver. In my mind, there's no excuse for a wireless mouse to be underpowered, especially with today's technology. I'm happy to report that the range on the V450 Nano greatly exceeds my minimum expectations!
As I first stated, the size will probably be the biggest issue for people, especially those with large hands, and I have discovered that a large contributor to this problem is due to it's neutral design. If it were contoured for one hand or the other, it would probably feel more natural. The smallness IS more appropriate for table-top use where you might have limited room for a full-size mouse, so it's really a trade off. Portability for somewhat less comfort.
At least as far as performance goes, this mouse has been true to the Logitech quality I have been accustomed to. Tracking is very precise... I can take the mouse in my hand and gradually crawl the cursor pixel-by-pixel on a 1920x1080 screen with an accuracy that feels essentially the same as my corded MX518. (I hate mouse acceleration, what they call "enhanced precision", so that is turned off and the tracking speed is set to the midpoint).
I mentioned something about the range... it is VERY good and I was honestly not expecting even half of the range I tested it at... which was 35', line-of-sight. The range is actually sufficient for me to walk into any adjacent room to the study here, put the mouse up against the furthest wall, and control the pointer on my laptop screen. Of course I have to walk back to actually see where the pointer moved to... but I can safely say that the mouse will work from anywhere in the same room as the laptop.
There was also no issue with the laptop being between the mouse and the transceiver... it continued to track just fine, despite the orientation or having some obstructions.
Battery life? I've only had this mouse for 2 months so I cannot make any absolute statements. However, I generally turn it off by hand after I am done using it, but I believe it will also go into a sleep mode if not touched for a while. My perception is that it will indeed last for months on a single pair of AAs with moderate to heavy use. As I tend to give it light to medium use, I will not be surprised if it lasts the better part of a year.
The USB transceiver is indeed tiny and I literally did plug it in and forget about it as of two months ago and it is doing just fine. I am always careful to place the laptop into it's pack with the transceiver side up. The interior is padded, but I feel it COULD become damaged if the weight of the laptop were on top of it.
There are four slip pads on the bottom of the mouse at each corner. They are of a substantial size, eye shaped, and look very secure. Due to the size of the pads, the mouse slides almost but just not quite as fluidly as my MX518 does (the 518 has five tiny oval-shaped pads). Considering the rougher surfaces a travel mouse may encounter, I feel the larger pads are a good thing. If you don't want them being scuffed up, however, I'd suggest getting a mousepad for your Nano.
Overall, I am very impressed with the V450 Nano and any doubts I initially had have been removed. If you can, try to demo one in the store so you can see how it fits in your hand. Logitech DOES make a contoured (right-handed) mouse that also uses the micro USB stub, called the "Logitech® Performance Mouse MX", so you might want to check that out if you place comfort over portability.
