Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech V20 Notebook Speakers (Black)

Customer Review: 4.5 Stars, though probably the best in class
Summary: 5 Stars

This set of speakers is fantastic for what it is: USB powered with no Subwoofer.

Now, I don't consider myself an Audiophile but I AM an music addict. That said, I own about 10 different pairs of headphones (ranging from big ones to small ones to in ear etc) that have cost me anywhere from $5 to $300. In terms of speakers, I've owned a couple as well, from the popular 2.1 Klispchs to Dell ones.

I just had to write this review because having been using them more extensively these days, they are REALLY impressing me.

The V20s compared to:

Altec Lansing XT1s: Beats the snot out of the XT1s. Haven't tried out the XT2s, but oh my goodness. The XT1s distort with any sort of Equilizer usage, have almost no Bass response at all. Highs were good and that was about it. The V20s in comparison, lack a bit in the mids and highs, are adequate in Bass, and are VERY clear. With some equilizer tweaking on the laptop, I can get these to sound very very good, without the massive oomph of Bass I can get with plugged in 2.1s however.

Dell 2.1 Speakers: The V20s sound worse, but not too far off. The Bass is much weaker than the Dells, and it has trouble producing the same mids and highs, clarity is also inferior. If I could put my Dell speakers into the same form factor as these V20s, I would, but alas, it's not going to happen.

That said, don't expect these to sound as good as good 2.1s. Now I HAVE heard much worse 2.0s, (no sub) that required external power. But for the most part, plugged in 2.1 units with a sub will surpass this set easily. However, for what these ARE, and in factoring in the competition, they are great. With some equilizer work, they sound astounding when you look a little closer.. no sub and powered only by USB!!

Buy these from Amazon! I bought them for much more and I am satisfied, but at Amazon's price, it's a no brainer. You can take these on road trips, parties, whatever, and pump out some seriously good sounding music from your collection with the help of your laptop.

Customer Review: Not up to Logitec's Usual Premium Sound.
Summary: 1 Stars

I thought since all the reviews stated the sound was good, I was expecting something similiar to my very old set of Logitech's that I bought in 1989 at Service Merchandise! When I originally bought them, I didn't get the optional sub-woofer because that was another $200.00!! So for some expensive price I bought them and have had them on my pc ever since. They now reside on a secondary pc but are still the best sounding pc speakers for their size. The V20 is half a high, half as thin, about an inch narrower, and about 5% of the sound that the old one's have. ....clarity past 6 on the volume controls is such that they start crackling and sputtering....overdriven either through usb (which is 2.0) or the cone drivers are over driven. Might be that the cables need better shielding? I did expect them to not be as good as my origininal Logitecs, but this is way from worth the amount they are priced at...this is a good $20.00 product....thats ALL!!! I bought a set of Apple speakers at a yard sale for $1.00 that have more volume and clarity! I guess I could just make up some sort of portable kit to carry my orginal Logitech's with me.

The IDEA is good, but like someone said, the cord is short..guess you can't lay back and listen while working on a couch or chair of bed.
Not sure if I will return them, have to try on another laptop and another pc.

I just needed a pair of good speaker take on the road with me for presentations, work in the hotel room, or in the car.

Hmmm.... Maybe a set of good Wireless 6" speaker is what I need.
Hope all that buy these have good ears because no real volume is capable with clarity of sound.

Customer Review: Great Portable Speakers With Some Quirks
Summary: 4 Stars

Like other reviewers I got these speakers to use with my laptop. I have an aluminum body Macbook and was looking for a quick and easy way to get more volume and audible bass out of it. These speakers do the job admirably, though I have found some small issues that make them a little less than perfect:

Pros:
- The speakers are relatively small (though not tiny), and come with a cool travel case.
- They run on USB power. There's only one cord to plug in and you get both sound and power through it.
- They sound really good for their size. I can hear bass lines in my music again (something I couldn't do through my laptop speakers).
- They are quite loud for their size--much much louder than my laptop's built in speakers.

Cons:
- On the Mac it's not exactly instant plug-and-play. You have go to the sound menu in system preferences and switch the sound output to USB before the speakers will work. Also, it doesn't always remember the setting. I've had to go back and re-set it several times.
- I've noticed that most times I plug in the speakers they have a fuzzy, distorted sound initially. I have to unplug them and plug them in again before they put out normal sound.
- (Note that both of the above cons seem related to how the speakers work with Mac OS 10.6. They may not be a problem at all on Windows.)

Overall: I'm happy with these speakers and expect to get a lot of good use out of them. They don't work quite as seamlessly or automatically as I had hoped, but they remain more convenient and portable than most other computer speakers I've seen.

Customer Review: Very Very Good Portable Speakers
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had the V20's for about a year and find them exceptional. I have them hooked up to my desktop because they provide superb sound, don't require a power plug, take little space, and are an attractive addition to your desk.

I agree that the cable connecting the two speakers could be longer, but the speaker set was designed for placement around a laptop, not across a table.

On the sound, I find it to be superb. Excellent bass, great sound separation (lows, mids, highs), and they're quite responsive (have a punch to them). I've compared the to a number of other smaller speakers and the V20's had a much better sound, even compared to ones that required separate power. Sound quality is a subjective, but I have and had $5,000+ home stereo systems most of my life and feel these little guys do a fantastic job.

I've read some feedback about the speakers jumping on your desk at high volumes. This will happen if you really jack up the volume. The sound produced at normal volumes is more than adequate for music listening. These things are not designed to fill up a large room with floor thumping sound. I've listened to music pretty loudly and have never had them jump. I wouldn't consider this an issue.

The speakers are attractive and are well made. They don't look cheap. One reason why they're permanently on my desk.

I strongly recommend these speakers. I think most people tend to agree due to the large number of reviews on Amazon for these speakers and the high average rating.

Customer Review: Rockin' Speakers
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had these speakers about two months and they have worked GREAT
consistently from day one. I am running 64Bit Vista O.S on a Toshiba
notebook. These speakers are the GREATEST!! I have a close friend who bought these when they first came out and he paid a hundred smackers for them. I bought them on his recommendation. Now, I have read all the naysayers' reviews and quite a few mention the lack of depth & tone
quality and such.....come on now.... these are NOTEBOOK SPEAKERS people!
If you wish to have all that "exceptional quality" go out and pop a few grand and pick up some Cerwin Vega Studio Speakers and I would suggest a
high end tuner like Yamaha or Onkyo or such. Now, I would say, if you're not in a hurry, to drop in these in your cart and wait a few days and see if the price changes....I only paid 48.95 two months ago. Anyway, I am totally satisfied after at least 40 hours of playing them! BTW... for those you who are pretty much totally new to computers and wish to adjust the tone depth and such, you simply go to the Start Button, then click on the Control Panel button. On that screen you will see all the myriads of available junk your computer has on it. Look for the picture or Icon of a Speaker(s) and click on that. W/your speakers currently hooked up, you should see two or even three choices available with new Creative V20's already highlighted; simply click on on the Icon and a panel will open up allowing you to adjust the Treble, Base, and Volume etc.
