Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech USB Desktop Microphone (Black/Silver)

Customer Review: Don't speak into the microphone
Summary: 4 Stars

To minimize pops during recording, speak with mouth a few inches from microphone at 90 degree angle (sideways). I purchased this to record announcements for a computer controlled message center on the Mac. Sound quality is adequate and Apple Speech Recognition commands are recognized. The USB device must be selected as the input device within the Sound preferences; while there, increase the input volume to about 75 percent. (If the mike is unplugged, it must me reselected in the preferences.) I use GarageBand to further increase volume and edit recordings. This may not be suitable for recording live songs but for general speech recognition from a cross-platform device, it's a great value and looks sleek and modern.

UPDATE : November 7, 2007 : Volume for all recordings was too low. It was necessary to increase recordings to maximum within GarageBand, export AIFF to iTunes, drag files back into GarageBand again and set maximum recordings before exporting again for the sound bytes to be heard on phone system.

Customer Review: Exactly as advertised
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a small regular jack microphone that I used on my ThinkPad laptop since its internal microphone is absolutely useless (it is too close to the speakers and too weak - so if you turn up its sensitivity, it will pick up the speakers and feedback with a horrible shriek).

But that jack microphone wouldn't work with my MacPro, so I got this Logitech USB one and it was exactly what I wanted out of a microphone. I took it out of the packaging, plugged it into the USB port, and configured it in the settings - done.
It has worked flawlessly ever since and I use it regularly for Skype calls to clients around the world.

I haven't tested it much with PCs, so I can't speak to how well it works on those - but it is great on the Macs. You probably will need to increase the sensitivity a bit in the settings, but other than that, flawless.

The on/off button at the base is great for conference calls and you don't want side conversations locally to interfere with the mic'ed conversation.

Customer Review: Works great for recording conversations
Summary: 5 Stars

I use this mic to record my business conversations, and it does exactly that. I can place the mic several feet (5') away from where I am actually conversing, and it consistently picks up my voice and the voice of whomever I am talking to.

As long as it is pointed in the general direction of our conversation everything works fine, and the recording is always understandable.

In comparison to the previous mics I used in conjunction with my voice activated software, this is the only mic which is usable. And with the handy mute button placed on the unit, I can always quickly mute things when necessary.

Otherwise the design of the mic seems solid. The joint the mic is actually mounted on seems strong enough to hold the mic in place (even when mounted vertically). And the base of the unit has some weight which prevents the unit from flying around too easily.

For the purposes I use this mic for, I can't recommend it enough, especially when I consider the price.

Customer Review: Far surpassed my expectations!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a little bit concerned while reading some of the reviews about the sound quality. I needed a microphone for my audio class, and didn't want to spend a lot of money because I really wasn't sure how often I would use it after the class. I received the microphone yesterday, and plugged it in. My Dell Ispiron laptop recognized it right away. I was exited to play with my microphone, until I realized it show that it was recording, and the track was there, but there was no playback. I got pretty frustrated and thought for sure I would be sending the mic back. Today, once I was less stressed, I checked all my settings, and realized the input volume was very very low. Once I maxed that out, I opened up Adobe Audition, and was absolutely blown away by the sound quality of this mic! It was amazingly crystal clear! Easily CD quality. I am a firm believer that when it comes to electronics, you get what you pay for, but not with this piece of equipment, this mic is an unbelievable steal!

Customer Review: Goodbye headsets!
Summary: 5 Stars

I had bothered with headsets for a while and finally got fed up with poor quality so I decided to go the cheaper route of buying a standalone mic that was half the cost of a headset. What a brilliant decision! The mic's build quality is head and shoulders above the quality you get in a headset at this price. This feels like a "real" piece of equipment: a reasonably weighted stand, and a rather pleasing design. The "on/off" button feels well made and it lights up nice and bright so you know when its "hot".

Set up was stupidly easy: plug it in, hit the button so the light is on and start talking. In Windows 7 you can tweak the gain so you can sit pretty far back and have it easily capture your voice (it seems like the default is set fairly low). Tried it on my Macbook pro and it worked there too with just as much ease, though due to design its only home will be connected to my desktop.

After all the headaches I had with headsets, this is a delight.
