Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech USB Desktop Microphone (Black/Silver)Customer Review: Vista 64Bit / Adobe Premiere Elements Summary: 3 Stars
This is a fantastic microphone. The sound quality is excellent. The base is solid with a good mass to it, so it stays put. The ball and socket work well to hold the mic where you position it. The length looks odd at first, but getting a mic placed so you can comfortably speak into it, is critical - and the size works fine for that. The big on off button is nice. Overall, a great looking simple device. Recording quality is top notch.
It absolutely works plug and play with Vista 64 bit. Installation couldn't have been more simple, plug it in, wait a minute or two, and voila - it works.
Adobe Premiere Elements 7, on the other hand, was a serious problem. I could not get this microphone to record narration. Impossible to make it work. Instead of recording directly in Adobe, you will have to use the windows sound recorder to work up your narration. Save the recording as a WMA file, import it into Premiere and then use it. It all sounds complicated, but it's not really.
A downside to this microphone is the whole control panel ordeal. There's no really simple single place with just a click or two to adjust input volume. You have to open the Recording Device panel. Highlight the Microphone, click on properties, then click on the Levels tab, and then you can adjust a recording level slider. Fortunately while you are recording from the microphone, a db meter is just to the right of the microphone device page of the control panel. Sadly, that input level set, will reset whenever you attempt to use narration in Adobe.
So there's a ton of juggling back and forth between the Windows recording program, the Sound Recording Device control panel, and Adobe Premiere. It's not tough, but it's also not fun.
None of these problems are singly Adobe, Microsoft, or Logitech's problem. Trouble is, Logitech should really find a way to resolve this, it's gone on since Elements 3 was released.
The instructions are hugely sparse - plug the USB cable in and speak (oh yes, test the install with Windows Sound Recorder). If the drivers don't install, well they should, it's not Logitech's problem.
When you can record with this device, it works very well. Controlling the device is a whole different bag of tricks, nothing about that is intuitive. And don't expect to record narration in Adobe Premiere video editing software.
