Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech S220 2.1 Speaker System with Subwoofer

Customer Review: Fine for the price
Summary: 3 Stars

When I saw the massive number of positive reviews for these speakers I figured I couldn't go wrong - but audiophiles beware.

I'm not an audiophile but I have a several computers (Windows and OSX), all with attached speakers.

These rate somewhere in the middle in terms of sound but near the top in terms of value.

Pros: speakers are small, sound is ok, price is right. Controller is small and unobstrusive.

Cons: subwoofer is large (obviously) but seems to hiss and vibrate with any volume increase. Cables are a rats nest. This set would rate 4 stars if all the cables were separate from the speakers but every single cable is attached to some part of the system. I'm using them with a workstation that has a lot of peripherals, so it was a chore getting the speakers and wires set up the way I wanted and out of the way.

Though I'm not disappointed due to the low price, I wouldn't buy these again.

I have a set of appledesign powered speakers (M6082) from 1993 that I'm using with another system. They are yellowed with age but still work wonderfully. They sound better than these and they don't have a separate subwoofer. But even back in 1993 they cost more than $30.

Customer Review: Satisfied with my choice
Summary: 4 Stars

I looked at Logitech S220,LS21,Z4; Creative T3100;Altec Lansing FX4021. Finally decided on Logitech s220 and so far I am not disappointed.
I was on a limited budget for PC speakers, don't like my music and movies too loud, and I don't have very high audio quality needs.
S220 speakers have good sound quality, compact size, 3 years manufacturer warranty and are just $25.
The subwoofer seems well built for the price, it is slim and easy to hide under the desk. The bass control is on the back side, which is practical enough, considering once you set the bass to your taste, you rarely would adjust it. The AC power adapter is inside the subwoofer, which is nice. Bass is good, as long as you don't set your volume above 50%.
Satellites also look solid for their size and are attached to the subwoofer via standard 3.5mm stereo plug. They have very small footprint - good for those of us who don't have lots of free desk space. They sound OK, a little on the weak side. Middle tones are fine, treble - decent.
The only thing in the whole system that appears flimsy is the wired remote - it is very small and light and does not stay easy in the correct position. I hope it does not break.
Overall very good!

Customer Review: Excellent output, but needs equalizing to really shine
Summary: 4 Stars

Just got them in the mail today to supplement my laptop. I'm no audiophile, but I do mess around with Reason and audio engineering a little, so I have some basic knowledge.

Great bass output, though I don't turn mine up all the way otherwise distortion creeps in. Same goes for volume output, but honestly who expects speakers like these to output sound for a home theater anyway? It's definitely more than enough for desktop purposes, so that's all good.

I had to use an equalizer to get rid of the really noisy mid-range frequencies, though; I also tweaked higher freqs to come out a little more cleanly, or else the audio really sounded muddy to me. But after tweaking EQ and stuff, everything sounds pretty great, from orchestral to rock to techno (although I tried making chiptunes sound even crisper, it started to affect how how other types of audio sounded, so I had to tone it down.)

Definitely excellent value for money, and even with my laptop's integrated soundcard limiting it to 16-bit/44kHz output, I'm glad I made the purchase: really surprising output for something this small and cheap. But I think I'll still be using my Sennheiser headphones if I do mastering though.

Customer Review: Worst PC Speakers I've Ever Bought
Summary: 1 Stars

These speakers are the biggest disappointment out of all the items I have ever bought on Amazon. I was impressed by all of the great reviews, Logitech products are top notch most of the time, and Amazon reviews have usually steered me right over the years, but these speakers were the ultimate exception. It all comes down to sound quality, so I won't dwell on anything like features or price, they're fine. The sound is just simply terrible. Both the sub and satellites buzz and crackle when any music is played above a moderate volume. I live in a small apartment, so I don't need loud speakers, but these make horrendous noises at even lower volumes. If I turn them down so they don't crackle I can't hear anything. The build quality is embarrassing for a company like Logitech, even for cheap speakers. In short, they are useless for music, gaming, TV, everything. They sound horrible and it's just not up to the level of quality I expect from Logitech. In the future I will think twice before accepting Amazon reviews at face value, as I have no idea how anyone else could think these things sound good. I will also have to think twice before buying Logitech, and I will never buy any speakers from them again.

Customer Review: Sound quality better than expected...
Summary: 5 Stars

When I bought these speakers, I expected poor bass and average overall sound quality and construction. What I got surprised me. The sound quality far exceeded what I expected. I use these speakers with an iPod dock, so I love the little control pod. I had a lot of fun switching the plugs for my old speakers and these ones and listening to the difference, and also had fun boosting the bass, putting my hand of the hole at the front of the subwoofer, and feeling the air blowing out. The satellite speakers can unplug from the sub. The build quality was overall good, with a bit of a cheap plastic feel on the control pod, but nothing that interferes with performance. It should be noted that there is a wire that comes out of the back of the sub, goes to the control pod, and then out of the control pod to the computer connectors. This isn't a bad thing, it just caused some troubles for me and the way I wanted the speakers positioned. It should be fine for those who are actually using these with a computer. The wires to the sub and to the connectors are about 3 feet on either side of the control pod. Overall, these may be some of the best speakers in this price range. Buy a pair and hear the difference.
