Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech S220 2.1 Speaker System with SubwooferCustomer Review: Great for the Price, But... Summary: 4 Stars
Overall, I am happy with this product. Keep in mind I gave it 4 stars.
Hardware:
As far as looks go, the speakers look nice. They don't take up much space and have an attractive look. The sub woofer isn't bad, but it looks like an old radio made with modern products. My biggest problem with the hardware is the cords. First, the power cord for the sub (the speakers are powered through the sub) is 3 feet long. In a dorm room where the power cord is 5 feet from the desk in the corner and only a 2 foot long power strip, I have to leave the sub on top of my desk so it will reach the power strip. Seemingly in order to try to make up for this glaring flaw, Logitech has given you much more than ample cord length for connecting the speakers to the sub... and only split the speaker cables so they only just fit around my laptop. In short, prepare to mess with your arrangement if your power strip isn't right under your desk and you won't be able to split up the speakers much. Otherwise everything else is good.
Sound:
These speakers are a conundrum when it comes to sound. I want to get this straight: They don't have the "tin can" flavor of sound that is so prevalent in laptop speakers. The bass is there. But it's not always powerful. Strangely enough, while playing Half Life 2, the sound was incredibly pleasing, filling my dorm room with a full sound without flaws. However, when playing a rich orchestral piece in media player, the bass sounded weak. It was as if the lower brass section had developed a light case of the flu. What really interested me was that when I plugged my headphones into the speaker plug, the sound stayed weak and sickly. Horrified at the possibility of my headphones dying, I quickly unplugged the speakers and plugged the headphones back in to the computer directly. The headphones were fine, leading me to believe that the reason why the speakers sound weak during music lies in the drivers.
Overall, these are really nice speakers for $25, probably some of the best in the price range. Just realize that you're not buying a $250 system and you will probably be pleasantly surprised.
Customer Review: Incredible value; good sound in tiny speaker package Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this set of speakers to watch videos and occasionally listen to music on my laptop, which has terrible speakers. I needed something that could plug in to my external monitor and had a remote. I wasn't certain that I wanted speakers, but that this price, I figured they were worth a try. I had fairly low expectations, considering the price, but was very pleasantly surprised when I plugged them in. While not incredible, they are clear and produce good sound, even compared to higher-priced sets. I enjoyed the sound, but was disappointed by the bass response, which was only passable, even with the subwoofer turned all the way up. The bass didn't sound bad by any means, but if you like to feel your bass, these are not the speakers for you. After using these for two weeks, I purchased the Cyber Acoustics 3 pc Subwoofer/Satellite System CA-3602 to compare the two. I liked the sound of this set, but wanted to see what else was out there. Comparing the two side-to-side with lossless Beatles and Daft Punk, I was surprised at how close the two sets sounded. The CA speakers were slightly in terms of sound quality, and had better bass, but not as much as I expected. While I liked the Logitech speakers, I decided to return them, as the Cyber Acoustics fit my needs better. The CA speakers had a line in on the remote instead of a microphone, which I found more useful. I also felt the headphone jack on these speakers was somewhat noisier than the one on the Cyber Acoustics speakers, and I used headphones frequently. If you are looking for a cheap set of speakers, this is a great option, though. Even though this set has a subwoofer, it is small enough to be portable. I did notice that some of the cords were a bit short. It worked for setting the system up on my smaller desk, but note that you will not likely be able to spread these speakers extremely far. This set is an unbelievable value, though. If it fits your needs, I recommend it.
Customer Review: Acceptable for Monetary Price, but Not Recommended Summary: 3 Stars
On a budget, looking for speakers for use with MP3 players, laptop, and other media devices.
Over all, I would NOT recommend these.
We accidentally purchased these instead of Logitech Speaker System Z323 with Sub-woofer. Because of the difference in price (S220 was about $30.00 cheaper - half the cost), we decided to just keep these when they arrived...
For the record: I now wish we had just canceled the order. :P
The old Dell A425 woofer w/ 2 satellite speakers these Logitech S220 were meant to replace are much better! Even though the Dell set isn't attractive, and the left speaker doesn't work unless the the volume is at least 50%, and sometimes there is static from said speaker, the Dells are STILL better, and they're staying on our living room laptop. They are going to be refurbished, and the NEW Logitech S220 system is going into the back room where we don't often use bass.
HERE'S WHY:
- The Dell A425 set is only minutely larger than the Logitech S220, but the bass is infinitely deeper and richer with the Dell system.
- With the bass turned all the way up on the Logitech S220, it is only at ONE FIFTH of the capability of the Dell A425.
- Bass on the Logitech S220 sounds like a snare drum (booo).
- The S220 has crisper sounds, but that is likely because our Dells are old, beaten, and been through MANY household moves.
Not sure of the quality of the Logitech S220 speakers, so I can't say if they will get static or stop working entirely, like other reviewers have noticed.
For about $90 to $100 you can get a Dell A425 system.
You get what you pay for with the Logitech Speaker System Z323 with Sub-woofer.
Over all, I wouldn't recommend these, even on a tight budget.
Customer Review: My View... Summary: 4 Stars
I would consider myself a novice audiophile, and that's only because I am always researching speakers and headphones, looking for the best deals and greatest quality. I didn't actually research and pick these, because they were a Christmas present, but I'm fine with them and they define the term "more bang for the buck"...
Cons-
>>Narrow sound. These speakers don't fill my bedroom like I would like, but there's nothing out of the ordinary that would soak up sound in my room, they are just weak sounding.
>>What people have said about the sound range is absolutely true, but in my opinion it depended on what song. From song to song the quality may or may not sound great. I've listened to many styles from rap to classic and these speakers don't do it all for me. For the most part, a regular consumer wouldn't be able to tell the difference and I don't suggest that you let this deffer you from buying these speakers.
Pros -
>>Style/Color/Peripherals. Nice shine on the speakers and I love the volume control/on-off switch. I'm big on controlling the volume of my music quickly
>>Bass. It's not perfect, but if you have got the volume up loud enough, you are able to feel the bass. For the size of the sub-woofer, I think it has quality bass production.
Anyway, the biggest con for me was what I called the narrow sound. When I'm listening to songs with rich sound (orchestral music and pretty much anything not hip-hop/rap/rock etc...) I really like to be surrounded with the sound, these just don't do it for me. But that's okay, because when I have the urge for that feeling, I'll just plug in my old faithful headphones.
This is a great buy for any home consumer looking for something on the cheaper side to leisurely play their music or iPod or what-have-you.
Customer Review: Truly Great Speakers Summary: 5 Stars
I picked these up because I was getting a dedicated monitor for my PC as opposed to using my TV and the monitor I chose didn't have built-in speakers. I didn't really want to spend a lot, so I selected these. I've used Logitech products for years and have always been pleased with their performance, and these speakers are no exception.
As far as I'm concerned, these speakers can be quite loud. They can definitely fill the room (and hallway) with sound. Clear sound. Since I'm sitting a couple of feet from them, I barely have them turned up. Just for this review, I turned them all the way up. WOW! Whether low or maxed out, the sound is rich and crystal clear. And no, I don't have sensitive ears. Quite the contrary, I have slight hearing damage due to years of listening to loud music.
The only minor downside I see is that there isn't a lot of bass. But I didn't knock off any stars for this because I'm sure my expectations were unrealistic. I guess I have it in my head that if there's a subwoofer, there will be massive bass. That's probably why I blew the stock sub in my car. LOL. There is bass, decent bass, in fact; it just doesn't shake the floor. It becomes quite noticeable if you adjust the subwoofer control.
Overall, these are great speakers, especially when you consider the price. They are easily the best computer speakers I've ever had (admittedly not an area I've ever dedicated substantial sums of money, though). If you're looking for speakers to do high quality sound work, well, you shouldn't be looking at $25 speakers in the first place. If you're looking for speakers for general everyday listening (internet radio, watching online videos, playing games, etc.), these are perfect and won't break the bank.
