Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech S220 2.1 Speaker System with SubwooferCustomer Review: Logitech S220 vs Logitech Z340 Summary: 4 Stars
So I bought a Logitech Z-340 set from a friend for $20 years and years ago because the volume knob had crackling issues. I used them as the primary speakers to play music and movies from my laptop and have loved them. They had a lot of bass for such a small system and the mids and highs were okay. Recently the plug you put into the audio source started failing so I looked around for a cheap set of speakers. After all the reviews I decided to get these S220s.
First off, the S220s are really compact and fit much more nicely into my entertainment system. Compared with the Z340s, they are much taller and narrower which I find to be more visually attractive as well as more functional.
The thing that I probably like the most out of the S220s is that they have a buttons/inputs piece that is on a separate node from the actual speakers, so I can place my speakers where I want them and then deal with inputs/outputs and volume without messing around with them. The external node has a nice spinning jog-wheel-like volume control on the top that is super accessible and easy to use. It also has microphone inputs and headphone outputs on the node. The Z340s didn't have anything for microphones at all.
In addition to the node, the audio plug-ins that you input into your laptop or TV (or whatever) have a green and red cord. The green cord is clearly the audio input, so I am imagining that the red is the microphone jack that they say it has, I don't use it, but it is there if I need to. A pretty cool feature for a cheap set, the Z340s had only the green cord.
Now for the sound, first off when I started it I kept the bass off (turned all the way down on the back of the sub) and the highs were very crisp and sounded much better than the Z340s did. When I turned up the bass to the max the response was okay but it wasn't nearly as powerful as the Z340s, although it did sound much more clear. Even though it doesn't have quite as much boom, I would say the overall sound quality of the S220s is superior to the Z340 because the Z340s were pretty muddy, even though they had good boom, but the S220s were clear and consistent even though lacking the huge boom. I would say if you are all about bass you might want to try another more expensive set, but if you want decent bass with good clarity then this is a good cheap system. Also, I like how the S220s have the air-hole setup in the sub, when I crank up the bass and volume it pushes A LOT of air, so that is kinda nice. It could make a piece of paper flap in the wind at over a foot away with no problems.
Overall, I would say if you want to spend less than $30 but want to get a good sounding 2.1 system, this is definitely a great product. It has a lot of features and good clarity of sound. I removed one star from my ratings only because it could have had more bass, other than that this set is one of the most amazing speaker deals I have ever seen. I loved my z340s and was hoping other Logitech products would have the same great quality for a low price and I was not disappointed, I will definitely be sticking with Logitech products in the future.
