Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech S120 2.0 Multimedia SpeakersCustomer Review: Pretty good--for budget speakers. Summary: 4 Stars
I'm somewhat torn about what to rate the S120s at. On one hand, I'm not at all impressed with the sound quality (and I'm no audiophile), but then again, I really don't have a wealth of experience with budget speakers so these may actually be among the better sounding ones (I've definitely heard worse). On the other hand, they are brand-name units and are built like a tank. Ultimately, I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and rated them four stars as opposed to the three I was leaning toward.
As usual with Amazon, they arrived in an acceptable amount of time in good condition. I was disappointed to find them packaged in an OEM-style brown box when they were clearly identified as "Retail" units on the website when I ordered(I suppose it's possible brown boxes are the retail packaging for these). They're small (expected for budget speakers), but are quite solid with good fit-and-finish and have respectable heft for their size. Fairly plain, styling-wise, they're appearance is unobtrusive and, given their size, all but vanish on the desktop. The power and audio cables are long enough for most applications, though, being AC-powered, some may have issues with the relatively thick power cord causing placement difficulties. The power/volume knob and headphone jack are well-enough placed on the outboard side of the right speaker. Set-up is about as simple as possible--connect to source, plug-in power and switch on.
Functionally, they're good enough. They're reliable with a brief warm-up time and produce a decent amount of volume. There's minimal hiss and static and they don't really distort until cranked way up. The problem is the dynamic range, the bass is extremely weak. I'm not just talking about a lack of boom, I'm talking about sound that's anemic (borderline hollow) and somewhat washed-out and tinny (though I wouldn't go as far as harsh). The S120s look to be S220s without a subwoofer, so I'm guessing these speakers were designed to be run with a sub and would likely sound very good with one.
I guess it comes down to how tight of a budget are you on? If you absolutely can't spend more than $10-15, then these speakers are a very good choice, as I seriously doubt you'll do much better for the money. If you can spend the extra 15 or so dollars more, then the S220s (or other 2.1 systems) would likely prove a much better sounding option. Either way, for the money, the S120s are pretty darn good. Qualified recommended.
Customer Review: Defective Product However Amazon Made Return and Refund Super-Easy Summary: 1 Stars
After receiving these and following the directions to the letter (except for the "second" non-existent cord), the speakers had a horrible buzzing sound. We contacted Logitech support who suggested trying them on another device ~ which we did, and which only made the buzzing sound worse.
Plus (while looking for a solution to this), we found from the Logitech site that they have major problems with these working with the Vista Operating System, even if they are not defective (we only have Vista on one of our computers, but someone considering purchasing these who uses Vista should be aware of this ~ in fact, would HIGHLY suggest going over the Logitech web site before purchasing these to see what problems people are having with various operating systems and devices). While it is great that so many people have purchased these and like them, they are not a product we personally will be purchasing again. I wasn't expecting Bose-quality sound, however was at least expecting a product which was plug-and-play and that WORKS!
However: FIVE STARS ***** FOR AMAZON: This is the first product I have ever had to return to Amazon ~ and after returning other products to other retailers in the past, the "returning" experiance was not something I was looking forward to, frankly. Therefore I was pleasantly surprised with the ease of notifying Amazon that I had received a defective product, then getting a shipping label from Amazon (follow the instructions carefully, not complicated, but do need to be followed) so I could return them at Amazon's expense. I was also pleasantly surprised that Amazon gave me so much time to return them, handy because we have had consecutive blizzards over past weeks and getting out would have been a major hassle had the time-line been more stringent.
Amazon does INDEED honor their "30-day" guarantee, they pay for return shipping if you pack it and print the shipping label and place the designated part of the label inside the package. For as many products as we have purchased on Amazon, and after reading so many of the incriminating reviews, I was surprised (number one) that this is the only product so far we have received from Amazon that is un-acceptable and that the Amazon Return Policy is designed for the ease, comfort and convenience of the Customer (and so EXTREMELY easy to use).
Customer Review: Good Price/Mediocre Speakers Summary: 3 Stars
In hindsight it seems extremely unfair to expect a $10 pair of desktop PC speakers to have reasonably good sound, but based my excellent experience with the Creative T-20 desktop multimedia speakers, and the very high numbers of positive comments on the S-120s, that's exactly what I expected. The Logitech S-120s are essentially a self amplified low quality 2" tweeter in a lightweight plastic enclosure. The claimed 2.3 watts is highly suspect, and the stated 50hz to 20khz is simply a severe exaggeration.
For $10 the Logitech S-120s are a good buy on a fairly mediocre speaker. In fairness, they're a decent value and are clearly better than most of the PC/multimedia speakers that are often included in a PC package, but most of those are simply awful speakers that won't come close to satisfying a remotely serious listener. The S-120s are a step up to mediocre. This review may seem a little harsh considering the low price tag on the Logitechs, but had I read more realistic objective comments about the sound of these speakers, I would have passed on them, so I hope that someone gets a truer view of what they can and cannot do from these critical comments. There are undoubtedly legions of happy campers who own this little system, but you'll have to count me as a dissenter. On the positive side, they're small, easy to place, well constructed, and have an easy to reach on/off volume knob. If you have realistic performance expectations based on what these speakers really are, they'll be fine for many non-critical applications but there's no chance of these replacing a decent set of real audio speakers hooked to a real amplifier or receiver. Alas, the laws of physics remain unwavering! The S-120s reproduce sound with some minor semblance of realism, combined with a fair amount of not so surprising box noise and amplifier hiss. The end result leaves them sounding pretty much like any cheap boom box type radio/music player with poor clarity, weak bottom end, and no dynamic realism. Logitech does offer a version of these speakers with a subwoofer called the S-220 2.1 for ~ $25, which would add some weight to the bottom end, but won't cure the many other ills of the sound.
Customer Review: Cheap price... REALLY cheap speakers Summary: 1 Stars
Okay, I know it's true that one gets what they pay for...but Logitech's S120 2.0 Multimedia Speakers give that saying a truly unfortunate level of reality.
I bought these speakers for my Gateway P-7805u FX gaming computer...a computer that is wonderful in every way,.as long as you don't mind its exceptionally bad external speakers. I've frequently purchased Logitech products in the past, and I've always been very impressed with their value for the price, so I didn't hesitate to purchase these.
Imagine my dismay and disappointment when I plugged them in and...well, the Tin Man would be proud of the sound quality, but I'm not sure anyone else would. They are, in every possible way, an inferior buy. The lows sound tinny in the extreme, when you can hear them at all, and the speakers actually crackle and vibrate when any high notes flow through them, even at about half-volume. And speaking of volume: though there is a volume control on the speakers, which I appreciate, the maximum volume can hardly be said to fill the room...and I work in a small one.
I even plugged the speakers into my Siig USB Sound Card (a very good deal here on Amazon, by the way, at around $20.00), but it only made things worse; instead of being thin, crackly and tinny, the speaker sound was full-bodied, crackly and tinny. The only good thing to be said about these speakers is that they do well with the spoken word--IF you use a sound card with them. Also, though they've taken tumbles to the floor a number of times, they sound just the same. Of course, in this case, durability isn't really a plus.
I've owned cheap PC speakers before and not been this disappointed; in fact, I had a set of GE PC speakers that cost around the same as these, but delivered excellent sound quality. Unfortunately, as can be the case with GE's products, they became unusable after about six months of very moderate use, because the cord came loose inside the speakers.
I can only strongly recommend that you avoid these Logitech S120 2.0 Multimedia Speakers. Sure, they're only ten bucks...but why waste your money?
Customer Review: Best Economy Speakers... Summary: 5 Stars
A few years back I bought a rather expensive set of Logitech speakers with a sub woofer for my computer. I may have gone a little overboard at the time but it was sure worth it. Although I own a fine stereo system I actually prefer listening to my favorite music on my Logitech system on the computer. I was greatly impressed with the Logitechs sturdy workmanship right out of the box. And the system has performed loud and clear with superior fidelity ever since...
When it came time to add a second computer upstairs for my son I was not all that generous for his system to sound so life like. But I did remember how much I was enjoying the quality of my Logitechs and decided to spring on this bargain priced set. I can tell you that I have seen and heard a lot of cheap two speaker systems in friends and neighbors houses. Most of them sound ok, but none of them come close to comparing to the sound that my son receives from these Logitech 120s. And believe me, he loves to crank them up and press them to their limit on a daily basis. They only resemble bargain priced speakers by appearance. They carry the same fine fidelity that my higher priced system does. Not as deep or as resonant, but definately superior to any other bottom line computer speaker system I've encountered. If you are in the market for a bargain priced set of speakers for your computer, you will find quite a lot of choices available here on Amazon. Most of them at this price level being essentially the same. I have not heard all of them to be sure, but I will bet I have listened to far more than most. And I can tell you that these Logitech 120s are the very best I have ever heard, or owned for this price. They are of an excellent build and quality and I highly recommend them for your computer, or any other systems in your home or office...
