Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF

Customer Review: Not a bad camera
Summary: 4 Stars

Works pretty well. Best in bright, ambient light. The feature that allows it to track you rmovement is so-so. Not a perfect feature, as the camera sometimes forgets to follow you. The autofocus needs plenty of light, also. At night, you run the risk of creatng hot spots when using indoor lighing that is too powerful.

After using this camera, it would be really cool if it had a remote. Regardless, let's hear some up-sides now...

I would recommend this camera, it delivers a quality picture, and most of its shortcomings (see above) can be overcome with a little ingenuity. We all have to remember, this level of technology is amazing for the price. Just 5 years ago and this sort of thing would have cost a mint...or have been unavailable.

Good camera, good picture, EXCELLENT micropohone. Will pick up a whisper from behind the camera at 10 feet away.

I am going to look into the Sony webcams also, as I really could use one with a remote.

Overall, very satisfied.

Cheers,

Wordman

Customer Review: Poor image quality, bad positioning, buggy software
Summary: 2 Stars

This camera has two big flaws and one minor annoying software flaw.
First, it is impossible to position the camera correctly. Ideally, you want a videoconferencing camera to be as close to "front and center" of where you are looking as possible, which means that with a flat panel it should be close to the screen's center. However, this camera only comes with a stand. Therefore, it's only practical to have the camera way off to one side. Result: you never look the other caller "in the eye" but always appear to be looking to the side.

Second, the image quality is fairly poor. Even just displaying on the local monitor, the motion lag is significant (i.e., I move and there is a clear lag until the image moves), and the colors are usually very washed out.

Finally, this camera has a very annoying software bug: it blocks Thunderbird upgrades. For some reason, it ties up a Windows file used for e-mail programs (that the Quickcam certainly does NOT need all the time) and this blocks the upgrades of Thunderbird. HUGELY annoying.

Customer Review: Extremely dissapointed
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this camera to be the cherry on top of the cake, and it is just useless. I have a projector connected to a computer I assembled myself to be our media server/internet server for the projector and I wanted to use this system to video chat (mainly skype) with family in Northern California, Germany and Brazil.

Unfortunately I waited until the computer was completely stable (Windows 7 64bits professional edition in English) to install the camera (I had Skype installed already) to find out that the camera made my system EXTREMELY unstable. I started to get blue screens and unexpectedly shutdowns all the time, what makes me VERY ANGRY. I'll be returning this camera to get the new http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-LifeCam-Studio-1080p-Webcam/dp/B0042X8NT6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1299438119&sr=1-1
I already on its predecessor, which is 720p, and it is amazing. I'll really miss the little motor the Logitech has, but is just unacceptable this incompatibility with W7, which is being reported by also users as well.

Customer Review: Good, But
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a fine product, especially easy to install. It works well and sets up easily with Skype(see below). However there are a few comments:

1 - The automatic pan and tilt feature is very easily confused. It does not work well. Most of the time I leave it turned off. You don't really need it.

2 - Given that you paid extra for the pan and tilt, I notice that there is some third party software available to allow you to steer remotely. This might be useful for remote surveilance, if that is your interest.

3 - The files produced are quite large. Hence for Skype and email I leave it set at a lower resolution.

4 - When using Skype video, be sure to increase the size of the physical window. I could not get incoming video until I learned of this issue on the web. (I think this is a Skype and not a camera issue.)

Overall, this is a good webcam, but I'll bet you could do just as well for 1/2 the price.

Customer Review: Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF Review
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased two Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF's; one for me and one for my girl friend. I read some reviews online and some people said that they had trouble with the installation. I followed the directions and had NO PROBLEM AT ALL. The camera itself is cool/different looking. The picture quality is good and the "Follow Me" feature works pretty good considering the camera is retailed at $129.00. My girlfriend was walking around her room putting on makeup then coming back to type and it followed her back and forth. The software itself is very easy to use and pops up automatically when you start using the Cam on Yahoo Chat or Paltalk or whatever chat service you are using. I like being able to maually control the camera as well. All in all this camera is pretty impressive and I'm happy thusfar. Short of this thing breaking on me I'll be very happy. My roommate in Iraq wants to get one now and is jealous that I found it first. But, that's just how I roll.
