Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF

Customer Review: Just plain awful
Summary: 1 Stars

I have purchase 2 of these. I thought something was wrong with the first one, I had it over a month, couldn't return it so I got another one thinking it was just bad. Nooooooo... The second one stop functioning also. Every time I launched the camera and try to make a call, it would freeze not only the camera, but the whole picture. It does NOT play well with other programs and these are programs that don't require a camera (i.e., iTunes). In fact this camera jacks my whole computer until I separate it from its base. So the trouble shooting steps I took were the obvious, of course, software and firmware/drivers upgrade, no dice. I reloaded the software.. still hosed. I tried it with 2 different OS, Windows XP with the latest service pack and Windows 7 64 bit. The conclusion is that this is just a horrible product.
By the way, when it did work, briefly, it did work with Skype and Video chatting with some instant messaging programs (i.e, Paltalk). But it seems to not like anything running when it is running. I do have to say that the microphone picked up EVERYTHING. I was talking to a friend through it (when it was working) and he can here me typing. He said when I spoke it was really really loud, so you do have to talk softly. Still I would never ever buy this type of camera again. It is complete garbage. Good luck to those who do.

Customer Review: Way overkill for Skype
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a high-end webcam in Logitech's lineup. The quality seems ok to me, although it is still made of plastic like every other webcam.

The big gimmick here is the motorized auto-tracking capability, which turns out to work quite poorly. It is not a problem of the facial recognition software. I can see it identifying my eyes and mouth correctly. Instead, the motor seems rather clumsy and inconsistent at following my movement. Logitech will do well by upgrading to better mechanical components.

The camera itself has a fairly high resolution. Unfortunately, none of the people I skype with has the bandwidth to receive HD images, so the feature is again wasted. Worse, the additional pixels need a lot of CPU horsepower to process, and the 1.6 GHz dual core in my machine is simply not up to the task. I have been waiting for the price on Q9450 to come down, but the camera forces my hand.

Considering the nearly $100 price, I cannot say this camera represents a good value. Logitech is never cheap, but this one really comes close to being a rip-off. The built-in camera with my notebooks work just as well for Skype. Perhaps the QuickCam Orbit makes sense for people doing a lot of video-blogging, but for the rest of us, a built-in camera in the monitor actually takes up less space and costs significantly less too.

Customer Review: Good Basic Webcam, Not Sure About Some of the Features
Summary: 3 Stars

Starting with the good, the video and audio quality of this webcam is great. I use it for Skype video & audio calls and it has not failed to provide good output, even in low light conditions. It is certainly way better than the integrated webcam in my laptop. Additionally, Logitech have worked with Skype to enable 'high definition' video calls which improves the picture quality further if both people on the call have a good internet connection. Lastly, the camera is well built and the heavy base ensures that it is difficult to accidentally knock over.

On the bad side, the autofocus feature is next to useless in my experience. I ended up shutting it off because it would constantly lose focus on my face during a call. The same goes for the tracking option which has not managed to reliably follow me around yet. The Logitech software is a bit intrusive for my tastes and most of the non-control features are novelty items rather than essential.

In general, while this does a good job of being a simple webcam, I would probably recommend others to go for one of Logitech's cheaper cameras like the Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 / QuickCam Pro 9000 which has a similar image quality but dispenses with the motorized lens.

Customer Review: Great Product & Great Seller
Summary: 4 Stars

The Logitech Quickcam Orbit AF is a great piece of webcam tech. When searching for a good quality webcam, I wanted to make sure it had a good framerate, range of options, and be a sturdy piece of equipment. I can say that I got exactly that. Everyone that has seen videos from the cam comment on the quality of the video and as well, the face tracking system works well, even with a couple of people in focus.

The only thing that doesn't make this product a 5 star rating is one of it's attachments. It may have been because I bought this product used, but in very good condition, but I do have to say that the construction of the product makes me question it's quality. With the orbitcam comes a 9 inch connector that attaches to the base which allows the cam to be more at eye level, or for it to allow for viewing objects below it's baseline. I mainly use the cam with this connector and if the cam is bumped or nudged the connection with the base and the connector becomes lost. It really isn't a problem because I just setup the video again, but it is an annoyance, especially when talking to someone. It is a small problem, but I did want to reference it regardless. A great product nonetheless and a great seller as well.

Customer Review: Great webcam
Summary: 5 Stars

I am extremely happy with this camera, its face tracking features are amazing and I cannot fault the quality of the picture it provides.

I was born in Australia but now living in America, and a month after moving to the US, conversations over the phone just didnt do any justice, so we each decided to buy a webcam, and it has taken away a slice of the heartbreak.

Its facetracking feature is great when my wife and I are talking together and it automatically keeps us both in the middle of the video.

It has some gimmicks that i never use, like changing your face to an avatar such as an alien or shark, but my teenage sister thinks its hilarious and loves changing it so it has the fun house mirror look.

The camera also comes with a little stand that mounts onto the base so if your a bit taller (such as myself) it is easier to be looking at eye level instead of raising the camera all the way up and getting a nice shot of your chin.

If i did have any complaints, I guess it would be the price, but for the features that the camera has, its definitely worth the money, and its a logitech so you know it has great quality.
