Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Optical Notebook Mouse Plus (USB)

Customer Review: Excellent performance, inconvenient design, and LOUD
Summary: 3 Stars

It works like a charm on both PCs and MACs. The all-terrain optical sensor truly does work practically everywhere, which is a great plus. The mouse is just the right size (not too big, not too small) and fits quite comfortably in my big hand.

However, a few design flaws made me want to return this. For one, the cable wrap-around system is great in theory but poorly executed. The cord is short and barely wraps around. It will also start showing heavy signs of stress where it bends after only a couple of days, so I imagine it would break off pretty soon. Also, the USB connector snap-on button is extremely fragile and easy to deform by the slightest pressure, making it nearly impossible to snap it back into place.

But my biggest gripe has to be NOISE. The clicks are okay, not silent by any means but not loud either... but if you rub your fingertips backwards on the buttons (a common gesture when pulling the mouse back) then an annoying and quite loud scratching/creeking sound is produced. I was asked twice, while in meetings, to please put it away. It might be that the buttons on my unit were loose or somewhat defective, but I do tend to believe this is a problem with the type of plastic. It's disappointing, given the ultra-high standards Logitech got me used to.

So overall this would be a winner if it wasn't for a few poor choices in design and materials. If the above problems somehow don't affect you, buy on. Otherwise, think twice.

Customer Review: Excellent for Price Range
Summary: 4 Stars

This mouse is perfect if you're looking for an inexpensive plug and go mouse for all OS's, including Mac Leopard.

Pros: No installation needed, just plug in and it's ready to go. It's small and highly portable with the wrap around cord feature that clicks snugly in place. It works perfectly on my Mac, including the much missed right click button and scroll wheel. The optical lens works well on most surfaces, though I can't honestly say "all". Considering how much I paid for it, I'm very pleased with the product.

Cons: There a few issues keeping me from giving it a 5 Star Rating. First off, the cord length. Because I'm right handed, and the USB ports on a MacBook are on the left side, the cord must stretch across the front or back of the laptop in order for me to use it. The cord is too short to do this around the back of the computer, and just a few inches shy of being able to do it comfortably around the front.

If this is going to bother you, consider upgrading to a wireless mouse.

Another small issue is every once and a while the mouse will shot off on a tangent. It's been a bit irksome when working in a graphics program that can't afford such shoot offs.

Considering the price, and how well it interfaces with my computer, I would recommend this mouse to someone who doesn't wish to spend $25+ on a notebook mouse.

Customer Review: Great Laptop Mouse
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this last summer to accompany my then-new laptop, not expecting much for the cheap price, and in fact anticipating (judging from an older review or two) that it would break down fairly soon.

Nothing of the sort. This mouse has taken a lot of falls and beatings and works as well as if it came out of the box.

It's rather small, especially if comparing it to my desktop MS IntelliMouse, but you can tell that from some of the user shots above. Those who are used to the big, 5-button mice, don't let this make you hesitant of buying a small 3-button one--your hand adapts very fast (indeed, the IntelliMouse starts to seem too heavy), and the absence of buttons can be made up for with mouse gestures (available, at least, in Opera). In return, you get a very portable and inexpensive mouse.

The one thing that could be better about it, and why I give it four stars, is that it the cord well at the base isn't very deep at all, and there's no locking mechanism for it (only for the actual USB plug, for when you disconnect the mouse). The cord will constantly unravel around it, and will cause annoyance when you move your mouse around. In other words, you will usually have to opt for having the cable extended the whole way and lying somewhere off to the side, rather than retracted into the base.

A great product beyond that, though.

Customer Review: Nice mouse, but the cord is annoying: UPDATED
Summary: 2 Stars

The mouse is nice and light and the scroll wheel even works, which is more than I can say for my previous mouse. The only complaint I have is how the cord is wrapped around the bottom part of the mouse after you are done using it. The reason this becomes annoying is because you have to tightly wrap the cord and if it isn't tight enough the usb connector won't be able to reach the place on the bottom of the mouse where it is supposed to snap into. So if it doesn't reach you then have to unwrap the cord and then rewrap it more tightly. I have had the mouse about 3 weeks and I still don't get it on the first try. You would think that there would be a better design than this or at least some leeway in the cord length so this doesn't occur.

UPDATED: So after less than two years of use the mouse broke. I suspect the reasoning is because of the cord, which I complained about earlier. The manner is which it died reminds me of a short. It didn't die instantly, but in the stages of a few days. Eventually it just didn't work anymore. Because of the tight winding that had to be done to put the cord away, a great "crink" at the end of the cable developed. After winding and unwinding it on a daily basis since I bought it, my guess is the copper cord, or whatever it's made of, just got worn out and broke. I will not be buying this mouse again.

Customer Review: Turning a tablet into a home base computer.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have an IBM (now Lenovo) Thinkpad computer which is a hi-tech marvel for portability. (I carried it on a long-distance, month-long motorcycle trip.) However, its power went to waste when I had it at home, because the stylus and the compact keyboard are just not adequate for intensive data entry. Little did I realize that, if only I could get around that barrier, the processor, the memory, and the operating system (Windows XP) far outclassed my desktop computer (Windows 98 vintage).

Then I found that, when connected to its "dock", which provides more outlets, the Thinkpad could accommodate a full-scale PS/2 keyboard and this Logitech Optical Mouse (USB). Suddenly I have my little tablet serving as my base computer! And the mouse is entirely adequate. As mentioned in some other reviews, it does require a little more lifting to make long moves, but my overwhelming feeling is that it has made my day.

And by the way, I was deterred at one point by a misapprehension about the "optical" part. It's not a laser for pointing at the target. It's a light that shines downward where the mouse pad used to be, and substitutes for the rolling ball. (Everybody else in the world probably knew this already, but just in case anyone didn't, now they know.)
