Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Optical Notebook Mouse Plus (USB)Customer Review: Tracks poorly, noisy Summary: 3 Stars
It is hard to stand against 190 primarily very positive reviews, but then I followed these reviews to purchase this rather disappointing mouse and need to rebuke them.
From positives, the mouse has a good shape and size for a notebook size and uses up its outline for concealing the cord that wraps around the base of the mouse. Also the scroll wheel is fine.
The big negative is the lack of responsiveness. The mouse has the worst tracking of the wired notebook mice I tested in parallel, including Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse, Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 and Iogear GME222A Mouse. Notably, given that notebooks are used in a variety of environments, a notebook mouse should have a capability of tracking on a variety of surfaces. The Logitech mouse had difficulty tracking within my standard environment, seemingly because of the dark color of my table. On the surface of a CD, the Logitech mouse was most often unable to start, while Iogear had some difficulty there and Microsoft mice had no difficulty whatsoever. When the dedicated Logitech software is installed, additional lack of responsiveness of computer to the mouse develops, where the computer and cursor repeatedly disregard, in an absolutely infuriating fashion, any movements of the Logitech mouse. The Logitech site advices reinstalling the SetPoint software. The interesting twist to this is that it is impossible to uninstall that software using the standard Windows infrastructure. To accomplish the uninstallation, you need to use the fortunately free Revo Uninstaller. Reinstallation of the SetPoint in a special boot mode for Windows and tweaking of the SetPoint settings can reduce but not eliminate lethargy in the response. Eventually, I uninstalled SetPoint for good, but still repeatedly went to other mice to be able to work and, finally, gave up on this mouse completely.
To sum up, I advise to skip this mouse. Myself, I ended up going with the wired Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse 3000, which is a delight by comparison. I did not consider wireless mice, because of my interest in responsiveness. The Iogear mouse has a better tracking than Logitech, but is less convenient to hold in your hand. Overall, I would still choose it over Logitech. Admittedly, there exist still bottom of the barrel no-name mice that have even worse tracking than the Logitech Notebook Mouse Plus.
Update: The circumstances of working at different locations have forced me to use the Logitech mouse a bit more and indeed, as some have noted, it is noisy to the point of distracting the user. My experiences give me quite a perspective on the validity of overall customer ratings and this on the site that, in my experience, does not censor the reviews or ratings to skew the outcome.
