I bought this mouse from CompUSA to replace older Logitech Optical Mouse.
As you know, The difference in Optical Mouse and Mechanical mouse is Optical Mouse uses a small LED light to track movement and Mechanical mouse uses a ball with few rollers. Mechanical mouse require maintenance because the rollers that move the ball around tend to get dirty. Optical Mouse require hardly any maintenance. However, Mechanical mouse only uses 5mA or less electrical power as opposed to Opticals 25mA. Power usage is only a concern in wireless mostly or in computers with smaller power supplies.
Anyways, this is a black optical mouse and you can't see the LED light from the sides. And I have used it for few years now without incident.

I upgraded 2 older Macintoshes running Mac OS 9.1 with this mouse (identified as M/N M-BT96a on the bottom), and I have been very happy with the functionality of the 2 buttons and scroll wheel.
The box didn't mention OS9, but it worked fine for me without installing any special drivers.
On some days, I do have to unplug/replug one mouse after a cold boot to get the second button and scroll wheel recognized, however (not a big deal for me, because cold boots are few and far between).
From time to time this mouse does "warp" to another part of the screen for me, but perhaps OS9 or the 3rd-party USB card or mouse pad plays a part in that phenomenon. Not sure.
I'm very happy with it overall.

For a mouse valued at $12 and eligible for free shipping on orders worth over $25 (at least it was for me when I got it from amazon.com) this mouse is decent at best. I will be brief as possible in addressing its characteristics.

-Mouse tends to make a squeaky noise when used to click after being used for a long time.
-cheap feel. It's made in China, so like everything else made from there, it's made out of plastic. Makes stuff cheap and light. I guess that we can't "have it all."

Like the reviewer before me, I've been using this mouse for about 2 years and I have no complaints whatsoever. I thought I would write something just to help reinforce the idea that, if you are looking for an inexpensive, reliable, no-frills mouse, then this is a good candidate.
For me, the ideal mouse has 2 buttons, needs no maintenance and it's responsive to my hand's moves. This one has 2 buttons and a scroll wheel (which I never use), needs very little cleaning (I believe I cleaned it twice in 2 years) and is responsive to my hand's moves.
This is all I need in a mouse and that's what I'm getting out of this one.

Not much to say about this basic mouse except that it is super easy to hook up and use.You just plug the mouse into your pc mouse port and your done,no drivers to install,no software to take up space on your hard drive,just plug this thing in and it's ready to go.Because this is an optical mouse there is no mouse ball to get dirty and muck up the works,this thing has a little red light at the bottom of it that works as a mouse ball would.The light reflects off of the surface that you are using and makes this mouse as easy to use as a regular old school mouse but without the dirty trackball.Simple and easy to use.Works great.
