Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Illuminated Ultrathin Keyboard with BacklightingCustomer Review: It will be a great keyboard when issues it's plagued by will be solved and price will drop below 50 dollars. Summary: 1 StarsPros:
Stylish thin backlit design
One of the most silent keyboards I have used
Decently built though definitely not excellent (quite cheap materials, read more in my review below if interested)
Cons:
Major deal breaker: key-blocking on letter "v" almost each time
Expensive for a corded, non-gaming keyboard! Design and backlight are not enough justifying the price gauging on it!
No USB ports (not even mini ones!)
Some keys are dimmed
Function keys not lit
Keys are flushed to surface
Could be even more silent
Disappointing performances
Software drivers could be improved
Lacks of ambient light auto dimming control (standard on many laptops with backlit keyboards such as Apple's, but that' more a wishful feature than a cons)
Made rather cheaply with all-plastic keys and mechanism
Wrist pad may be ok for some but too small for others. No deeper swappable wrist pad included or even offered as accessory
Back legs are weak, poorly designed and only allow 1 position
Short review:
I bought this keyboard for my wife who loves to play online games and write. That supposed to be an upgrade to the noisy and bulky G19... after 2 frustrating days of trying to use the new keyboard, she went back to the G19 for the few reasons listed here and too many more to enumerate in a short review.
I tried to use the keyboard myself and although it's indeed nice-looking, is just junk for me, for starters there is no official Mac support, so I have not even tried it on a mac and mainly because while using it on a PC performances and usability was less than stellar. So while I do understand it may work for others was a complete failure on my case.
The key-blocking on letter "v" was the most apparent and annoying that I've experienced. Each time I wrote "the vendor" I would end up with "the endor" or "th endor" the faster you type it the worse it is. This keyboard will make you realize how frequently the letter "v" (especially in conjunction with the "e") is used in English. :)
After writing a page without looking at the screen as I often do, I realized that all those misspellings errors were attributable to the keyboard not working properly. If you have a decent (although not fast) typing speed then look elsewhere, unless you love going over the pages you write to spell-check and correct something that wasn't a typo in the first place, but rather a "keyblo" ;). I found it extremely frustrated having to fight each time the "little blocking devil" that came with this keyboard, therefore it's now heading to recycle or to a less type-demanding friend.
The construction is so poor that if you happen to play or type fast on the keyboard some keys WILL detach themselves from the mechanism needing to carefully reattach it. If that happens be extra careful the materials are terrible as far as strength is concerned. Use precision tools like pliers and spudger and may be also have a "third hand" holding a magnifying lens to help you in the reassembling process.
I did have to go through the reassembling of keys unfortunately, and I've got the chance to personally see the flimsy and plasticky quality of the mechanism, which should be made of harder polymer to say the least or, even better, light and strong laser-cut rubberized steel. The keys are also cheap plastic and made in a substandard grade. The connection at the bottom of each key is absolutely terrible and extremely fragile. Also the way the individual keys are built tells me that as soon as the black "painted" layer will wear off (and it will if are gaming with it), you will be left with a key that will shine a bright whitish light whenever the backlight is on.
I examined the mechanism's working principle and I found it ingeniously stupid, especially considering that there are tons of laptop keyboards (including some Acer and Apple ones) that use far better systems. Why reinvent the wheel when you can't manage to come up with an improved version of it? Who came up with that design? Must have been an fres-out-of-engineering school interning at the company ;). And I have put together, disassembled, repaired quite a few electronics (laptops being just one of them) throughout the years, so you'll just have to trust me on that one. Obviously you are more than welcome to do your research, but it's likely you will reach to similar conclusions... so trusting who've been there and done that before may just help save you some valuable time :)
Also...Thin is good, too thin may not be since that is probably the only reason why the keyboard has no USB ports at all, sacrificing functionality to design is a bad choice in 99.9% of cases.
Conclusion
I wish this keyboard was better built and had no key-blocking issues. Fixing those two major problems (at least for me), would make it one of the most attractive keyboard upgrades. It's a shame it already isn't.
Note: My rating is based solely on my experience with this product. My review reflects only my personal/professional point of view I am not looking for people to agree or disagree with it. I was fully aware that I was taking a gamble about the problems I've previously read about on other reviews and hoping it would have not been my case. Please read more on the web about other experiences so you will be able to make the most informed decision before purchasing this or any other item :)
