Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Harmony 890 Remote Control - RefurbishedCustomer Review: Just the right remote to simplify things Summary: 4 Stars
The price was right for me to get this refurbished version at $120. Before this, I had issues with turning on my audio/video components as they were not in direct sight for IR response. Solved my problem of having to point sideways to my digital box to turn on the cable access. You'll need to "stick" the IR receptors (connected to the included extender) to your AV component to convert the radio signal into an IR signal which makes this a little messy. Remote took a bit to set up as you have to connect to your computer and enter all your AV components. With a little manual override to set up my older version receiver, I managed to get everything to work. Now, I simply push one button on the 890 Remote and everything turns on at once. A good and bad feature is that you'll need to use the "help" button every so often to turn on or off components when they are out of synch. Has all the buttons you'd have on your all-in-one remote from the cable company. Has that plasticky feel to it and no touch screen but great at the price I got it for.
Customer Review: Bought two, one died just out of Warranty Summary: 2 Stars
Unfortunately I have to update my earlier praise review. I have 3 Harmony 890s in my house. I've bought 2 refurb, one is working fine but is not used a lot. The one we use most, in the home theater, has a blank screen now and is unusable, and this happened just after the warranty ended. So I have a 50% failure rate on Refurbs. My original 890, purchased new about 3 years ago, is going strong. So I think it's a problem with quality control on the refurbs. I see on AVS Forum where people have had this same screen problem and have replaced the screen successfully with 880/890 screens purchased for less than $30 on eBay. I may give that a try.
So buyer beware. With 3 out of 4 Harmonys in my house, I haven't needed support. They're that easy when they have no defects. I love the Z-wave feature to control my theater lighting. There is no solution like the Harmony for home theater A/V and lighting control. Despite the issue, call me crazy but I may order a 3rd refurb here and a screen from eBay to repair the broken one.
Customer Review: Very bad quality Summary: 1 Stars
I was really excited to get this because, in principle, it was exactly what I wanted. However, the build quality was very poor. Half of the buttons did not work and actually caused the remote to crash and reboot when pressed. Also, the RF extender did not work at all and kept returning a checksum error when I tried to update the firmware. The final straw for me was that customer support was non-existent. They have a slick online support page to enter your problem and I got an initial email (automated) pretty quickly saying that a "specialist" would be assigned to my issue within one working day. Over the next week I kept finding more issues with the remote but did not hear from Logitech. Finally, after two weeks I returned the remote in frustration. A full week later I got an email from Logitech! I updated my support ticket to let them know what I thought about their lack of support. I have since purchased another universal remote, a wireless keyboard and mouse and a webcam and none of them are Logitech.
Customer Review: Another bitten by the RF Extender Summary: 3 Stars
let's face it, we wouldn't buy this if you didn't need the extender, there are cheaper models if IR is all you need. I am in the process of sending back my second refurbished unit due to the RF Extender returning the dreaded checksum error. Another poster listed the PID's affected (located on bottom of extender), and both my PID's are the same and on his list.
Logitech pretty much sucks with these refurbs. They refurbed them, but didn't reset the in service date in their system, so you aren't going to get a warranty through them. Your only choice is to RMA the unit through Amazon, which thankfully has been a painless process so far with the first remote, hope this second one is painless also. Now they are out of stock till Jan 9 (not bad, only 5 days) so going to be without a remote for a few more weeks.
The remote itself is very nice, only reason it got the 3 stars. Luckily it was working pretty much perfectly in IR mode, but it means I need to keep the door open to work my system.
Customer Review: Nice to consolidate Summary: 4 Stars
I asked for this as a gift to help consolidate our current theater setup, which had remotes for a projector, XBox, receiver, Playstation, and DirecTv. Needless to say when the babysitter came over we didn't get to leave for another 25 minutes d/t explaining how in the world to work it. So now I am down to 2 remotes much to my chagrin. I did a lot of research making sure it would work with the projector because I thought that was a more unusual function. I found that is worked and decided to buy it for sure. However, I assumed that it would work with the more common systems, ie. Playstation 3. But upon setup it said that it did not work with any Blu-ray players at this time, but that we could buy an adaptor to make it work. After spending $200 for this remote, I didn't want to spend another dime to try to get it to work with the Blu-ray. So buyer beware if you are trying to run a Blu-ray/Playstation 3 this remote is not compatible.
