Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Harmony 890 Remote Control - RefurbishedCustomer Review: I got someone's defective remote - Logitech wouldn't help. Summary: 1 Stars
I ordered this remote last November (2009) as part of a sale that Amazon had for $99.99 (hundred bucks) and I didn't get around to playing with the remote as I was still working on my movie room. Well flash forward nearly a year later (October 2010)and I pulled the unit out the box. It had all of the plastic wrap and everything looked new. I hooked it into the computer to set it up and I got the error code: "Your remote failed the connectivity check." and the statement "This product was previously identified as defective and replaced under warranty. It has been disabled and therefore you will not be able to continue setting up or using this remote. If you have received a replacement remote please confirm it is connected and try again.".
I contacted Amazon and they said to contact Logitech. After finding out you have to deal with them through email, they asked me to send screenshots of my error code and my Amazon invoice which I did. They then said too bad in so many words and offered 50% off a new remote. Why would I spend $100 on another remote when I already paid $100 for one??? I can't believe the customer support that Logitech has (terrible) and Amazon should stop selling these remotes.
Customer Review: Great remote for anyone with a diverse living room setup Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this remote as many before me have to eliminate the need for 3 or 4 remotes to accomplish a simple task like watching DVDs. This thing is great. The setup is fairly simple with the most difficult task being the model number search on your devices. I use it for controlling an LCD TV, AV Receiver, Xbox360, and a PS3(which required an adapter also made by Logitech which required barely any setup at all.)
My only gripe about this remote is not even in the remote itself but rather the software that came with it. I have recently moved and found out at a new location that the remote software requires internet connection to reprogram it, which is a little frustrating if you are in a small town and have to wait for about a week for the technician to make it out to you from the big town to enable internet service.
Otherwise this is a great remote and I would definitely recommend this to anyone with a large collection of electronics under the TV. I have read the reviews of some people complaining about the size of the buttons being too small but as someone who wears XL gloves I can tell you that the buttons don't bother me at all and are very well defined.
Customer Review: Problems abound Summary: 2 Stars
This is a great remote, but the problem comes from parts of the remote. I owned one, and about a week after using it, the accelerometer would no longer light up the screen when moved. I could hear something rattling around inside. Luckily, Amazon was very helpful and sent out a replacement. After a couple of months, I noticed that Volume + button was no longer working as well as the other buttons. You really had to push down on the button to get it to work. Not a big deal, but annoying. Then, just the other night, the LCD screen went blank but would still light up. I looked up the problem on-line, and there is no fix short of opening the remote and replacing the LCD screen. I do have the SquareTrade replacement plan, so I should be getting a replacement/money back. Haven't filed yet, but I will update to let those out there who want to know how that goes.
Regarding Logitech, since the phone was out of warranty, they did offer me 50% off of a new one, but I don't know if I would want to go that route. The seem like great devices, but I'm not sure I want to buy something for that much to have it die so quickly.
Customer Review: Stay away from Logitech Remotes Summary: 1 Stars
I have a Harmony 880 remote which is experiencing physical hardware problems with some of the buttons. The volume + button doesn't seem to work reliably anymore. I have to press it extremely hard to have a button press register with the remote. I have had the remote over a year so I know my warranty is expired. This is a very well known problem it seems. I paid a lot of money for this remote and am deeply disappointed that is is having these type of design issues. I have used Logitech remotes for a number of years now and upgraded to this higher priced unit but never thought I would have these problems.
I have read about so many people having problems with the 'volume up' and 'channel up' buttons. It seems that it is only a matter of time for these buttons to fail. My recommendations are to NOT buy any Logitech remote. I have also heard of other Harmony remotes having similar problems. I have emailed Logitech but they refuse to acknowledge this design flaw and stand behind their product.
Don't believe me? Just Google '880 volume up' and check out all the different websites that people have posted on.
Customer Review: Harmony 890 Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this remote as an upgrade to my Harmony 880. I had always lean away from the 890 because of the price tag, but when this remote went on sale I made the leap and I am very happy I did so. This remote features all the ease-of-use of the 880 and adds RF capabilities which allow you to keep your components inside a cabinet while controlling them. Sure, you can accomplish the same objective with a IR-repeater, but the RF to IR-blaster setup means you don't even have to be in the same room to control the music.
At first I was weary about purchasing a refurbished unit. When I opened the first package to see that the device was deeply scratched, I was really disappointed. But Amazon's customer service was excellent. Within 15 minutes of emailing them, I had received an email apologizing for the damaged item and a printable UPS label to return it. They also immediately shipped me another refurbished unit to replace the one that had been damaged. That one arrived it great condition and I sent back the original. I was truly amazed with the way Amazon stood by their product.
