Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Harmony 890 Remote Control - Refurbished

Customer Review: Very good programmable remote
Summary: 4 Stars

Right off this remote makes having guests or babysitters over a breeze. I do not have too complicated of a setup. A tivo, tv ps3 and an HDMI switch. Through the setup I found all but one of my products and it was super simple to set up. My biggest complaint is actually a small one. When the remote sits for a long time it goes into sleep mode. If I pick it up sometimes its on the "Choose Activity" screen which means for me to turn the television down I need to go through the whole TV turn on mode. It only takes about 20 seconds but when I need to turn the TV down for a phone call or whatever it makes for a real pain.

The battery life is decent, because its a Lithium Ion battery the recharge time is pretty short so its a good trade off. The charging base is odd because it has a shortish cord and I could not find a good place to put it. You cannot mount it on a wall it must be flat on a surface, which means I have to move my old mail and smurf collectibles off the table.

Pros:
>> Easy to set up all of your products
>> Works with Apple TV, PS3 and other non standard remote electronics
>> Can control lighting systems and other things in your house like your remote controlled coffee maker

Cons:

<< 2-3 menu changes to turn the TV down when it has been asleep for a while
<< Cost is high for non-refurb model
<< Charging station takes up valuable land.

Overall this is a very capable remote for complicated systems and even basic systems where you may have lost your remote.

Thank you for reading my review.

Customer Review: Just As Good As New, Just Without All the Fancy Packaging.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have ordered several NEW Harmony 890 remotes in the past and was a little hesitant to order a reconditioned one. I usually do not order reconditioned product, but need two of these for an install and the price was right on these. They came in a Plain brown box with the Logitech and Harmony logo on the outside and "factory remanufactured" printed in small type at the bottom. I opened the box and found both remotes to be in excellent condition. They are obviously not brand new but are in excellent condition. There were no scratches or marks on either of them. They had the screen protector on them that come with the new ones. The charging cradle and IR receiver were new. Both had the plastic wrap on them as new ones do. They are mint. The battery I think was also new. I cannot verify that but they both seem to have the battery life that new batteries would. The IR emitters and power transformers were obviously used as they were simply wound up by hand with no effort to make them neatly packaged.

After programming the remotes and testing them, I've not run into any problems whatsoever that I hadn't already encountered with new remotes. They work fine. I just ordered another one today. I normally don't order reconditioned product but the Amazon fast shipping, guarantee, and return process made it a viable choice for me and it turned out to work well with this item.

Bottom Line - If you are thinking about saving some money on a Harmony 890 remote and are considering the reconditioned version, then go for it. If it's not what you expected you can alway return it. More than likely you will end up keeping it!

Customer Review: Truth in Advertising
Summary: 5 Stars

I rearly write reviews. I almost never give an item a five star rating. This controller earned it.

I picked this controller up on special for $99. It is worth at least that much.

Before I bought this controller my entertainment system required four remotes to function. A couple of those remotes only had one or two buttons I needed. This remote replaced all but one of them. It will not replace a PS3 remote unless you buy a $60 adaptor.

The setup wasn't bad. It easily set itself up for all of my hardware in minutes. It was very easy and the questions is asked made it a very simple process. The bump in the road came when I tried to use the wireless RF expander. They would not work together. There was nothing in the FAQs that helped. There was nothing in the Troubleshooting that helped. I finally figured out that the remote and wireless RF needed new firmware. At least it was easy to update them. After that it worked great.

One of the best features of this remote is the "Activites" feature. It's a glorified macro. Pushing one button will do everything you want. If you push "Watch TV" it turns on my satalite, TV, and Sorround Sound and adjusts all of them to the correct inputs. If I then push "Watch Movie? It doesn't just change the inputs, it turns off the hardware that it's used to watch a movie.

There is also an enormous amount of flexibility put into this remote. You can set it up however you want.

If you can find it on sale this remote is worth it.

Customer Review: Beware of refurbished wireless extender
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought the 890 refurbished. What a poor customer experience this has been!

When I connected the rf extender, I received a corruption error. I referenced it on the Logitech website and found that Amazon.com has been shipping corrupt rf extenders (refurbished by Logitech) for several months. On the Logitech website, it stated that Logitech was sending customer a new rf extender when they called in the problem.

Logitech looked up my remote and informed me that it appears that I used the remote 9 months ago (I got it three days ago) and that they couldn't support me unless I purchased a support incident. I unsuccessfully escalated my concern. Instead Logitech support (and sales) support acted helpless and told me that I could either pay Logitech to support this problem or return the item to Amazon. I am now returning the item after spending the past three days trying to configure it.

The support person at Logitech even denied having any information about a problem with th RF extenders.

A different support person posted the following on the Logitech support website:

The Following PID's (Found on the bottom side of the RF Extender) are affected with this issue:

All PID's should have an R as the final letter

LZ841
LZ917
LZ918
LZ919

Unfortunately this issue cannot be resolved with Firmware or Software updates and will need to be replaced. Please contact support to get this resolved.

Customer Review: Great value in an RF remote
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this Harmony remote on the recommendation of a friend at work. My next best option at the time looked like a much higher priced but similar remote.
My system consisted of a stereo receiver, satellite cable receiver, Blue-Ray disc player and TV. All 4 are in a closet near the TV. My wife loves having them out of sight. But only the cable receiver and TV would recognize RF signal, the others only IR. This remote bridged the gaps.
What I liked the best - the ability to program it through my PC. It turned out to be relatively simple to navigate the software on my PC and select the appropriate components in my system. The technical support team at Logitech were excellent. I called them 3 different times troubleshooting minor issues which were huge when I could not figure out how to make it work. But the tech support team quickly worked through my issues and it works great now.
What I did not like - the written materials with the set were not complete enough for me. But the tech support and online help made up the difference. And the remote is 'slippery', as in it wants to slip out of my hand. But the controls are well thought out, easy to use, and mimic my other remotes nicely.
Biggest surprise - the remote comes with a rechareable cradle. My wife loves it but is not good at replacing it on the cradle. So we have to work at that but we will save on AAA batteries in the long run.
Overall - well pleased and trust it will be around a long time.
