Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote ControlCustomer Review: Great concept, terrible button layout Summary: 1 StarsI thought at first this was the ba-all-end-all of remotes - it controls lots of different devices, is easy to program via your laptop, the color LCD display which changes based on function, rechargeable batteries w/ cradle, remote turns on when you move it, backlit keys, etc. But I can't recommend the 880 at all.
The button design is very cool looking but very difficult to use in a darken room. The volume up/down and channel up/down look nice in their curved placement but can't be easily found by your fingers in real life use. Same is true for PLAY and PAUSE buttons; they don't stand out in any way for your fingers to find. Also the ACTIVITIES button, which is used to switch functions on the LCD, is as flat as can be and hard to locate. So what good is a remote if you can't find the volume UP/DOWN and PLAY/PAUSE easily in a darkened room? The program via a PC concept that Logitech has created is super, but they really goofed on the 880 layout of the keys and they are back to using different designs on their other models. Also, the battery charger/cradle is very unreliable on the 880 and we had to get a new one. So the design goals for the 880 features/function was right on by Logitech, but the button design and execution make this specific model very disappointing.
Customer Review: Satisfied customer Summary: 5 StarsOrdered this remote for my Dad for Christmas and he had it up and working Christmas morning. Great product--would recommend!!
Customer Review: good universal remote for the money Summary: 4 Starscan't beat the value of this univesal remote for the money..easly to set up using your computer, just type in your model numbers and the program does the rest and walks you through installation and setup...only problem I have had so far is once setup I have to use the help button on it on occasion to reprogram it..the problems is it always turns the tv on the input...this doesn't happen alot and is easily fixed...overall I'm happy with the remote..
Customer Review: Good, simple remote Summary: 4 StarsI have owned two of these remotes and have purchased them as gifts for two others. For the price and features, I think they are the best universal remotes out there right now.
I am a home theater geek and I have a fairly complex setup as many people do nowadays. Changing the TV, etc. between different activities such as watching DirecTV to a DVD or playing a game can require several steps to make sure the TV is on the appropriate video source, the A/V receiver is set to the proper audio input, etc. The Harmony remote makes this task simple enough for the less technically savvy members of my household.
The online setup of the remote can be as simple or complex as you need. Personally I have created several custom utility activities for accessing various A/V setup features etc. that are not a part of the standard Logitech setup. I have always found this to be very easy and fairly intuitive. However, less tech savvy people will probably need a little guidance if they want to do anything other than the standard activities Logitech sets up by default.
The only minor gripe I have about the remote is its durability. Over a couple of years of use, some of the commonly used buttons require more and more pressure to get them to send a signal. The paint has also started to come off some of the buttons as well. However, our remote takes quite a beating so these problems are not unexpected and seem reasonable given how it is used (abused).
I have noticed that occasionally after making a change to the programming of the remote, some buttons do not seem to have their appropriate signal programmed. This seems random and is usually fixed simply by sending the programming to the remote again. I have noticed this on all the remotes I have purchased so I know this is not unique to my hardware.
These two issues are the only reason I did not give this remote a full 5 stars.
On the good side, the charging cradle still works great after 2+ years and the battery in the remote still seems to hold a charge just fine. Additionally, we did get a bad remote with our original purchase of this remote right after it first came out and Logitech customer support was awesome. They sent us a brand new in the box remote no questions asked. They didn't even want the old one back.
Overall this is a great remote that I highly recommend to anyone with more than a couple of devices to manipulate in their home theater setup.
Customer Review: Lives up to expectations Summary: 4 Starseasy to use remote. Haven't got all the bugs worked out yet, but super simple to setup and WIFE-TESTED and APPROVED.
