Customer Review: Well worth the price

I've owned one for more than a year. It controls a HDTV, digital cable box and DVD recorder. Also controlled a VCR till I another in the house died, so VCR was disconnected.
Only negative is placement of DVD controls. Every button is reprogramable, if required. In DVD play reprogramed channel up and down to change chapters.
I'm tech savy, but it did take some trail and error to get the LCD commands grouped the way I wanted.
I truely replaces 3 remotes for me. One button turns on units and sets them to proper connections.
I'm using no name green NiMH batteries. I charge them at beginning of month. Today I'd buy Sanyo Enlopes for even longer times between charges.

While it's very simple to program the Harmony 659, what actually happens when you use it is problematic. While I have it set to turn on both my TV and Cable box (seems simple enough), what actually occurs is that sometimes one, sometimes the other turns on (though it usually works fine), but what actual functions are activated depends upon the remote's whims.
Sometimes it works fine, sometimes I can't either get the TV to work as programmed, sometimes the Cable box won't change channels. At no time does the 659 actually enable the TIVO functions included in my Cable box. My wife has given up on the remote, and gone back to using the individual remote controls that work with each device.

I have been using the 659 for two years now.
Pros: It does provide 1 button function. Another pro is the ability to program components using the PC. It also has a help function if settings become fouled up.
Cons: It only works some of the time. Some times you hit the button and TV comes on correctly, other times, it confuses inputs and enters the wrong settings. Yet other times it puts itself into some odd mode and you can't control the devices that are currently powered up. You end up using the Help function A LOT. In the end, for the cost, it's not really worth the headache and annoyance. I went back to my simple programmable remote that came with my cable box.

i tried to get this to work with my old DirecTV Tivo system and it didn't know that system. i was told to set my Tivo remote and Harmony apart and press various buttons. the Harmony never learned a single signal from the older remote. this happened with the old DVD player as well. i almost sent the remote back, but i had a new HDTV on the way and upgraded that room to the newer DirecTV DVR system and a new DVD player. all were recognized by the Harmony and things are swell now. Sometimes the remote turns on everything except my receiver and then i can't figure out how to just turn on the receiver and not turn everything else off at the same time. that's why it's getting 4 stars.Customer Review: Refurbished 659

I did not want to pay over $50 for a universal remote. The refurbished 659 met my criteria; it also looks new and has a 90 day warranty. Once programmed this is a handy gadget. I have a wife and house sitters and they needed a way to easily control my home entertainment system. This unit is a "no brainer" to operate. My only negative comment is that it can be hard to program. It took me 5 hours of trial and error to program this remote! Some of their recommended selections didn't work on my system and I had to find what would work on my own. The trouble shooting questions didn't always answer my problem. It works now and I am totally happy with the performance of this unit.
