Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech G9 Laser MouseCustomer Review: state of the art Summary: 5 Stars
I never thought I would find a mouse better than the G5, but this is it.
I loved the feel of the G5. It is solidly built, optional weighting system for best hand/mouse control, programmable buttons, great software, quality construction and design all the way.
The G9 has all this and more but, unlike the G5 which is a fairly standard shape, the G9 is newly designed. It is wider and slopes to the right (ostensibly to fit the slope of the right hand, but I use it left-handed with absolute comfort). It comes with two custom grips for those that like a really wide grip. The only negative so far, for me, is that the wire (I have never had good luck with wireless peripherals) is wound with a fairly stiff material. This tends to interfere with moving the mouse a bit but the effect is lessened adding weight to the mouse, and I trust it will diminish as the cord gets broken in. BTW, though it will operate on just about any surface, go for something like the eXactMat, which offers the most subtle control and smoothness of movement.
The software is ingenious and provides more function alteration and control than anything I have ever seen: speed, acceleration, pointer, buttons. Every function of the mouse has a wide variety of options. Of course, the speed is world class at 3200DPI.
Actually, I am not a gamer. But I find that any computer is utterly enhanced by the peripherals: mouse, keyboard, speakers. Everything looks and feels better with good gear. My favorite aspect of the G9 is the scroll wheel which, with a button on the bottom of the mouse, switches from the usual ratchet movement to frictionless. This means you can spin the wheel and fly to the bottom of a long article.
I still want a Razer Diamondback in green, just for the looks, but it will have to go some to top the G9.
Customer Review: A splendid gaming mouse Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a long time Logitech mouse user. My current mouse, one that I've been using for four years, the wireles MX700, has become such an extension of my hand that using my computer is unthinkable without it. So it was with a mixture of trepidation and anticipation that I put the G9 Laser Mouse through its paces. I found it a comfortable fit with the adjustable grips, preferring the wideload grip to the precision because the precision grip seemed to make the cursor get a little jumpy. A function of my grip, I think. I found the weight tuning to be helpful in compensating for the way my arm moves and the precision with which the cursor moves. As far as the adjustable laser engine controlling the dpi from 200 to 3200, this appears to be a feature for someone whose feel for the mouse is more sensitive than mine. Such fine-tuning doesn't appear necessary for the games that I play.
The Precision scroll wheel worked nicely. I found the custom color LED display to be some serious eye candy that will also appeal to hardcore gamers who have gotten into macros and who are in need of quickly and visually checking the state of their profiles. Keyboard macros and advanced user profiles are not my daily usage modus operandi, though given the advanced features of this splendid mouse, they've piqued my interest. Though some of the features of the G9 might be considered esoteric, it's nice to know they're available should I evolve further as a gamer. This is a splendid gaming mouse which may replace my MX700 for daily usage, someday. Strongly recommended for those who need it or desire its possibilities.
Customer Review: Possibly the best mouse yet Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
There's not much to say about this mouse that hasn't been said already. Simply put, it's the best mouse ever made.
Awesome features:
For starters, you can customize everything about this mouse. From the weight, to the grip size, to the LED color, you can change it. No longer do you need to settle for a mouse that's too big, too small, too heavy, or two light. You can set the G9 exactly how you want it.
It's also got some amazing tracking. 3200 dpi is insane for a mouse. It's fast, it's precise, and there's no lag. What more could you want?
It's got all of the buttons you could want and then some. Your back and forth thumb buttons are there, and personally i find these indispensable when browsing the web. The precision scroll wheel is a nice touch as well, and rocks to use.
Possible concerns:
Even though it's the best mouse ever made, it's still not for everyone.
First, it's a corded mouse. Corded means faster, there is simply always some kind of lag with a wireless mouse. However, some people simply don't want that cord there, so keep that in mind.
Second, logitech's software continues to suck. It's never been great, but the good news is you don't have to install it. You still get all the basic features of the mouse without the software, but for some of the advanced stuff you're going to have to grit your teeth and install setpoint.
Finally, it's not great for lefties. Sorry guys, the mouse world continues to discriminate against you.
Customer Review: Good but not perfect Summary: 3 Stars
The mouse itself works great. The pointer movement is more precise than any laser mouse I've used..very accurate. Still, I can't seem to get over a few minor problems.
1. For one, the 'precision click wheel' that they advertise as a key selling point was a big let down. I was expecting it to be 'precise' but the wheel barely clicks at all and feels very flimsy. In fact my old G5 has better clicking action. I feel duped. At first I thought the wheel may have been broken and exchanged it for a new one, but its still the same.
2. Then the switching to the free scroll mode is a good idea but the button is on the bottom of the mouse, how lame, you can't switch it on the fly. I'll just use the scrollbars thank you.
3. Another problem is the awkward placement of the forward side button. It's so close to the the back button and at such a bad angle that you have to be careful not to press the back button. It should be angled outward so it would be easier to press. Not very good ergonomics.
4. I also read a post that the middle wheel button was easy to press but it requires just as much pressure as the g5. The wheel is flat which can help with pressing the button, but this also makes the left and right wheel button not as easy to use because the wheel is much shorter. The left/right wheel buttons feel much better on the G5 when gaming.
5. The position of dpi button on the side doesn't feel right to me. I liked it better on the g5.
6. The new weight system isn't particularly a great idea either. Changing weights require you to 'open up' the mouse grip so its just a pain.
For a mouse this expensive, you would expect better, especially when you can get the G5 for much less and work just a good.
Customer Review: Awesome!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This mouse is the best mouse I've ever used! I had problems with the G9-specific SetPoint software not installing, but a topic in the logitech mouse forums provided a fix, and it works fine.
A couple things, though:
- The included grips are a bit small for my hands, but the ID Grip that logitech sells on its website is a bit bigger than both the included grips, so I prefer to use that one most of the time.
- Being able to change the color of the LEDs and being able to store profiles is frankly quite awesome. I enjoy changing the colors of the LEDs on a whim, and the profile feature is handy for quickly switching controls when launching a game.
- This mouse is really kind of small. It's about the size of a generic optical mouse, far smaller than the MX518 I used before. Using the ID grip makes the mouse almost as big as the 518, but the mouse takes some getting used to because it's not as comfy as Logitech's other expensive mice. The MX5xx series is much more comfortable.
Overall, this mouse is totally awesome. I mean, it definitely feels awesome in your hands even if you don't like it. I didn't like its feel at first, and it's not a good mouse for people who like to feel comfortable when using the computer, but it's excellent for game playing and I've grown to like it a lot.
One last note:
If you were curious about how it displays the 5 profiles/5 dpi settings with only three bars, it works like this:
1st: [ . .
2nd: [ [ .
3rd: [ [ [
4th: . [ [
5th: . . [
The curiosity was kind of eating away at me when I was deciding on buying it, but yeah, that's how it displays the 5 profiles/5 dpi levels.
