Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech G9 Laser MouseCustomer Review: Awwwww Yeeeeaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!! Summary: 4 Stars
In a word - SWEEEEEET! First off let me point out that Amazon's FREE shipping including the order took 2 days (very nice since my mouse was broken). This is a real good mouse.
PROs:
-laser, DPI, change-on-the-fly speed, buttons galore, neat display (in custom colors) of speed, 2 "grips", weights (4x4g, 4x7g), saveability of 5 profiles for carrying the mouse to another place, glides like a dream on my table without those god-awful mouse-pads.
CONs (however insegnificant):
-I was really afraid this mouse was way wide for me (as I have small hands) and after reading all the "least ergonomic mouse ever" reviews, I got scared; well HA! First off: I CAN hold the mouse well. It's wide, though not terribly wide. It's also relatively short. The tro grips are basically the same except one has a rough finish and the other has a thumb-rest. When trying out different "grips", I took one off and before putting the other one on, I stopped and wondered. Looking at me was a sexy mouse hull without anything on top of it. So I tried that variation and I must say WOW. It felt like it was made for my hand. Now, with the "grips" off, you can still use the side buttons and weight tray, but the mouse is slimmer and IMHO, sexier.
The reason for my star off? That would be a new one in my book - it's impossible to pick this mouse up and move it without clicking on the side button(s). I often pick up and move my mouse during an online firefight. This makes it annoying, to say the least! *This is completely fixed when using the mouse without the "grips" on.*
Overall this mouse is worth it (I caught it on "sale" at [...] instead of the 70-80-90+ everywhere else.)
P.S. I don't really shift speed "on the fly", and like some other reviewers say, I never really caught the +/- buttons inadvertenly while pressing the main button.
Customer Review: Great Mouse Summary: 5 Stars
Coming from a wireless bluetooth mouse, this mouse is great. I love the on the spot DPI change. Its great when playing games that require different modes of play. I.E. CoD 4 and 5 when you change from short range weapons to sniping. Lowering the DPI while in sniper mode helps a great deal.
Anyway, mechanically the mouse is built pretty strong. The wire itself is in cased in what feels like a rope, and it seems very durable. This mouse also has the ability to change the scrolling wheel from the clicky type, where it clicks every time you scroll down or up, or a free roll type, where there is no restraint on the scroll wheel. This is great for scrolling thru pages of things such as excel. Changing set profiles for different games/normal use is also underneath the mouse.
Unlike other reviews I've read, I'm a claw type grip and i use this mouse fantastic. Long use with it kind of makes my hands tired though since the mouse is so small. I like using the rough grip more then the smooth rubbery grip since there is a place for me to put my thumb.
the weight system in the mouse is amazing. though even with a full load of the heaviest weights, its still lighter then my previous mouse.
Like a true gaming mouse, every key/button on the mouse is programmable with macros. with different profiles, this makes the mouse extremely useful. One MMORPG requires me to click and hold down ctrl while i click. with this mouse and use of profiles, i can easily switch from 1 profile, where the left mouse button holds down crtl for me, and a different profile where it doesn't.
Overall, this mouse is a great mouse to use if your a claw grip. I'd imagine it'd be a little small for a palm grip. A little expensive but for the amount of customization and controllablity the mouse gives you, the money is worth it.
5/5
Customer Review: Good but not Best Summary: 3 Stars
I have used and owned my fair share of mice over the years so I have a pretty good idea of what I do and don't like about them.
Overall this is a decent mouse, dpi changing on the fly nicely placed addtional buttons, strong build all round and very accurate. However it has a few glaring flaws which keeps it from becoming the my main use mouse. I bought this as a gaming mouse for my XPS M1730 laptop since I already owned the G5 on my main desktop I figured I would give this one a go and as it is smaller than the previous G5 I thought it was a good pair for lugging around in a bag with my laptop. And it is, small light weight no batteries/charging to worry about and as previously stated very strong build so you aren't going to be worried about breaking it.
The issues for me are apprent when comparing it to the G5. The size/shape for instance doesn't fit quite as well as the G5 and if you have bigger hands you may find yourself rubbing you little finger against the desk because of the very low profile design doesn't leave much room between your hand and the mousemat. The larger of the two grips may solve this issue however I don't like the feel of the larger and perfer the sandy grip texture that the smaller one has (why don't they both have the same feel?). Upon first use you may find it strange as the mouse is a little stubby at the back end, like it has had the final 20% of the back cut off, leaving a portion of your palm to drag on the desk behind it.
In short if you are looking to upgrade from the G5, don't. The G5 is a far superior mouse and more comfortable to be using for long periods of time. Even if you are purchasing your very first gaming mouse then I still suggest that you opt for the G5 unless you have smallish hands or are looking for a slightly smaller mouse for laptop use, only then would I reccomend the G9 over the G5.
Customer Review: Very good, but wheel concerns Summary: 4 Stars
I'm a gamer, but not the hardcore 10-zillion DPI mouse kind. I found the G9 to be comfortable and precise for both gaming and general desktop use. (Previous to the G9, I had a Microsoft/Razer Habu, which had a more comfortable handgrip, but the software stunk and it was an absolutely miserable experience for desktop usage for me, never feeling accurate at all despite all my attempts to tweak the settings.)
The G9 is smallish (using either of the interchangeable grips), but not uncomfortable for my medium-large hands. I prefer the rubber-ish "Wide Load" over the sandpapery "Precision Grip". Logitech claims they will have alternate grips available for purchase (I'd love to buy a bigger one if one was available), but none have shown up yet. The mouse has an insert to add extra weight to the mouse, up to 28g. That's nice, but I wish it were double that amount.
Then about 3 weeks ago (about 3 months ownership), the mouse wheel stopped responding to the rolling motions, except occasionally, if you held it upside-down while you rolled it. I googled around and discovered some other G9 owners with the same problem. It was a Friday night when I submitted a tech support request. I received a response on Saturday asking for a scan of my receipt (luckily easily gotten from Amazon's purchase history), and by Sunday I had gotten an email saying I'd receive a replacement in 7-10 days, with no need to return the broken one. (Yay - no need to pack and ship the broken one!) The replacement actually then arrived that Wednesday. (3 days later).
So the Logitech G9 loses a star for the wheel breaking, but gains one for the great (weekend!) service and the hassle-free replacement. I just worry that if the wheel breaks again (since it seems like others are experiencing the same issue), that they may not believe me.
Customer Review: Worth the price Summary: 5 Stars
This mouse is extremely smooth and highly customizable. Both the mouse itself and the software that comes with it are easy to set up and use. It is plug-and-play.
I've heard bad things as well as good things, but so far I have encountered none of the problems listed by other people.
Negatives
- mouse scroll-wheel takes a lot of pressure to click down
- mouse scroll-wheel left/right motion takes too much pressure to activate. up/down is fine
- weights won't matter that much unless you like a heavy mouse. Seems fine without any added weights
- dry-grip material isn't only somewhat effective
- clicking and scrolling is a little bit noisy
Positives
+ on-the-fly changeable sensitivity and profiles
+ profile settings to store up to 5 on-board
+ design is good. You won't be able to fit your whole hand on it, but it wasn't designed to be held that way anyway
+ placement of forward/backward buttons is good. sensitivity changing buttons are somewhat oddly placed, but not overly bothersome
+ changeable grip system works rather well and is quite sturdy
+ laser beam is not visible to the eye
+ very smooth movement due to low friction
+ cord is durable, yet flexible and does not interfere with use of the mouse.
+ long cord makes it suitable even for laptops (I have one and cord has not been an issue)
I find it to be comfortable, but some people have complained about the design. The lower part of your palm will rest on the table while gripping the mouse with thumb and ring finger.
Assuming you don't get a mouse that has something wrong with the hardware like other people have described, I highly recommend this mouse whether it be for gaming or everyday use. It is so smooth you won't want to go back to your old mouse!
