Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech G9 Laser MouseCustomer Review: Excellent Mouse with Software Problems Summary: 4 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The G9 Laser Gaming Mouse from Logitech is a very, very good mouse. It features wide customization capability, allowing it to be turned from a smooth-finished and feather-light piece into a heftier piece with a non-skid surface - and that's just the parts included in the package. The cover pops off and is replaceable, and you can apparently buy extra covers, though I haven't been able to find any as of yet.
I played a few games with the G9, chief among them Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, and the World in Conflict demo. Jedi Outcast was greatly enhanced by even the basic functionality available without the drivers of the mouse. Switching force powers and weapons became a snap, and switching the DPI setting of the mouse allowed for elegant and swift use of mounted weapons, which are otherwise somewhat slow. World in Conflict was less improved, though the smooth-rolling scroll wheel was an excellent tool here.
The biggest minus in my book comes from the software. G9 comes with version 5 of Logitech's SetPoint software, in a version specialized for the G9 - and that software has issues. On first install, it ignored the presence of the G9, on my Windows XP machine. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it... Which made the mouse stop working at all. Turns out that the driver that is installed apparently failed completely to initialize, leaving the mouse inactive. Rolling the driver back to the standard Windows mouse driver made it work again, but made SetPoint decide that no mouse was connected.
If Logitech gets their software to work on Windows XP, this is a five-star piece of equipment. The price tag is high, but you get value for every dollar. As it is, the faulty driver and set-up software mars the overall impression and limits the otherwise great options available.
Customer Review: Logitech G9 Summary: 5 Stars
Logitech's G9 laser mouse is possibly the best mouse I've ever had to date. It's extremely accurate, which is a must for both headshots and for the graphics work that I do. The buttons are all nice and clicky and very responsive, and overall the mouse appears to be well- constructed. Read on if you'd like to know more.
The on-the-fly DPI adjuster comes in pretty handy, though you might just find a sensitivity level you like and stick to it. The mousewheel is another interesting feature, as you can shift it between normal mode for games and applications that make use of each individual 'click' of the wheel, and flywheel mode for scrolling rapidly. The button for 'shifting' as it were is located on the base of the mouse, so its a little awkward to get to, but it keeps it from shifting on accident at the very least.
The weight system is a little dubious in its usefulness in my opinion, but I like my devices to be weighty so I made it as heavy as a could. There is some difference in handling between a heavy and a light mouse, however, so you might want to play with it. The weights themselves come in a cool aluminum box.
The swappable grips are another cool feature. One is larger and wider with a soft, smooth finish that's designed to fit a little better in your palm. The other is more narrow and shallow, with a rough finish that's easy to hold in a sort of "claw" grip. Personally I prefer the latter type, as my long fingers have always made it easier to hold a mouse with that claw grip. As a bonus, the rough texture also helps to keep my hand from sweating. Regardless of the grip you use, switching between them is incredibly easy and tool-less, so you can spend all the time you want testing them out. Keep in mind that both grips are designed to facilitate accurate, swift hand movements, and aren't designed to be as ergonomically comfortable as, say, the MX revolution.
Customer Review: Amazing mouse but not perfect Summary: 5 Stars
This mouse is the ultimate in actual precision, and not just in the numbers. It's smooth and can be weighted to your personal feel very easily and is very well constructed. I do however have problems with the DPI adjustment buttons and the s/s wheel. When moving the wheel side to side I often actuate either the left or right mouse button which can be disasterous in game. While the slight up curve on the l/r buttons is very comfortable, it is just too close to the wheel making it too easy to activate when using s/s wheel. Also when switching DPI I also activate the left mouse button quite often accidentally. This design is a bit annoying and I am trying to come up with a workaround, but perhaps I will actually do some machining on the mouse to modify the button areas I have mentioned, but probably not until it is much older since I paid a goodly sum for this and don't want to ruin it so soon. I didn't give the setup software good points either since I had some trouble with it though I believe spending more time with it will yield some great results. It can do so much it is just a bit overwhelming. The colored lights which change on the mouse itself to identify which mode you are in is truly great. And though I have quite large hands and at first found this mouse to be a little too small, I have adapted very well to it in just a few days gaming. Odd that it is so much better than my G5 that I used prior to this. But it is measureably smoother and more accurate even set to the identical DPI and weighting. Buy this mouse if you are serious about your gaming or just want a very comfortable mouse for anything. I also use this mouse for WaveLab and Solidworks and it is nothing less than perfect. You won't be disappointed. Oh and I didn't mention that the wire on this mouse does not interfere at all with the motion so no need to go wireless with all the inherent issues that can bring. (:-)}}}
Customer Review: This mouse is the best mouse available today. Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the G5 when it came out, and wow, it was nice, very precise, but as anyone who has that mouse can tell you, pressing the middle mouse button takes quite an effort, after a few months, I had to stop using it, and go back to a far inferior mouse. I bought the G9 recently, and am in love. It is everything I loved about the g5, and I can use it for regular use, and not just gaming.
The g5 ended up only getting used to play games, because everything was great with the exception of the middle mouse, and rarely do you press down the middle mouse in a game.
This new g9 has all the features of the g5, just better. The middle mouse rules, I can click it whenever I want, and it works (its odd that something like that can make someone soo happy, but if you have the g5, you will rejoice with this feature). I can now use my wonderful, fancy mouse inside of my OS without the fear of fighting the middle mouse.
The mouse has a good texture, it feels nice, and smooth, it looks great, and everyone enjoys it. My g5 had this "vintage" look, and it look wore out from day one (I thought it was cool, others thought I attacked the mouse with some vigor), this one looks good from day one! very comfortable, and highly customizable.
I used a friends razor mouse, and didn't like it. I have always enjoy logitech, and there design. This mouse is quite the departure from standard logitech fair. It looks futuristic, and is very high priced.
It is worth every penny, and should suite everyone who desires a nice precise mouse. I get no lag. I can play this online in games with no programs. I play cod 4, and this mouse is far superior to my g5.
I use this mouse with the Razer eXactMat X speed and it works perfectly. It is the most accurate combination you can get, and both are available here at amazon for free shipping.
Customer Review: G9 - fashion before function Summary: 3 Stars
The G9 mouse at a glance looks like the ultimate gaming mouse, it has tons of customizble features, interchangable cases, and programmable buttons. There's even sexy LED lights that you can change depending on the profile you've programmed.
So why a 3 and not 5 stars?
Because the pro's outweight the con's for me.
They advertise there's 100 different LED colors that you can choose, yes this is true however the difference between those 100 LED colors is hardly a difference but more like a dimmer or brighter version of the 15 main colors from the menu. If I could only have 5 different colors to choose from, I'd take that easily for a decent price cut.
The more slick and comfortable of the 2 interchangable cases has a thin plastic film over it, once you scratch that, it'll start to peel like you had a sunburn. That really doesn't impress your friends or make you smile when you feel the coating peeling under your hand.
It's not fitted for everyone, after long usage I've experienced discomfort in my hand and pink. A more ergonomic mouse will take the strain of your mouse hand just not as pretty as this mouse. I didn't experience this to my previous MS intellipoint mouse and that was $19.99 + in store coupon.
The fabric coated mouse cord at first seemed like a luxury, I said, wow they really pulled out all the stops...but in reality it starts to fray after much usage as well as collect dust a lot more noticably than normal cord.
All in all, it's had a lot of potential, the G9 gaming mouse reminds me of a really slick, expensive, dispoable item. The hefty price tag for mouse technology that will be overshadowed by another version makes it less than...vs greater than.
If you can get it for $49.99 or less, it might be worth it. Anything more than that and it's a gamble. 3 Stars.
