Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech G9 Laser Mouse

Customer Review: No issues, but still evaluating
Summary: 5 Stars

I made the move to this mouse from a MX Laser wireless mouse. It was one of several mice in this price range that I was considering and the Amazon sale price plus the Logitech [...] made me decide to buy it. So far, I have no complaints at all. The mouse works very well.

The mouse comes with two interchangeable grips. I found the larger mouse cover to be more to my liking. In fact, I purchased the even larger ID grip for it from Logitech, and it has proven to be my favorite.

As with any high-end device one must become familiar with all its features to really appreciate it. I spent a week or so changing weights around. The weight system seemed a little silly at first, but it actually is very nice. Not only can you change how much weight is in the mouse, but by positioning the weights in different spots you can change the mouse's balance.

The included software is excellent. You can program the mouse's many settings to your liking for any application and switch between them quite easily. Once you have used the software to assign a particular profile to a program, the mouse is switched to that profile when you start the application. It's pretty slick. As is too common these days, the online manual could be better, but since there are three preloaded profiles, I was able to use them as models to build my own. It is a process of trial and error; tweak and re-tweak, but this is largely unavoidable when customizing a mouse like this to your style of playing.

Programming of the mouse's buttons is the one thing I have not really mastered yet; I will try to remember to edit this review when I do.

All in all, I am quite happy with it so far, particularly at the excellent sale price I paid. (It was over 50% off with the rebate included.) I would recommend that you find a store or a friend who will let you get hands-on with any mouse in the [...] price range before you buy. As one excellent review of another product once pointed out, anything that you find a bit bothersome in the first ten minutes will become truly annoying after a few days, so it pays to take your time and do your research.

I can state without reservation that the G9 is a very well-made product. All the materials appear to be first quality. Fit and finish is excellent. Even the mouse cord is obviously high quality. If you are looking for a first-rate corded gaming mouse this one should certainly be on your short list.

Customer Review: Mouse for Gaming
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have used various Logitech mouse systems. The last one was the MX700 series and I was happy with it. The G9 was a nice surprise. It is even more comfortable to use then my last MX mouse. The variable weight options and adjustable grips give you all you need to give the mouse the feel you are more comfortable with. With the exception of the nice sloping back of the MX 700 series is gone. I think they should have given you the opportunity to keep that profile. But other than that you may choose how heavy you want the mouse and how wide. And you lose none of the normal Logitech ergonomics you are accustomed too. It is very comfortable to use and that comes in handy when you spend hours at a time using your mouse.

You are also able to select the responsiveness and tracking you prefer in your mouse and set your profile settings per game. That is you can store multiple mouse profiles, I have only stored two so far. I love the fact you can store macros in this mouse for your gaming (or other functions, I just use them for gaming). You can use the LEDs to remind you of which profile you are on with a glance; or change colors just because you want too. I also like the fact that I can take this mouse with me to use on what ever computer I happen to use since your settings are saved within the mouse itself. The scroll wheel is as precise as you would expect from the latest model of Logitech MX models, which is very nice. The two other thing I would have liked seen added to this game mouse is a couple of more programmable buttons and for it to have been wireless; but the lack of buttons that I have grown use to in gaming is the big hit to me. Add the buttons for us gamers and this will be a huge winner. I also look forward to the updated SetPoint software. This mouse has me seriously considering upgrading my keyboard to the Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard to increase the number of macros I can have programmed. For the price I would only recommend this mouse for the game player. If you do not play games, you do not need it.

Customer Review: Great for palm grip users, not so great for claw grip users
Summary: 2 Stars

If you are a claw grip user like me, which means you hold and move your mouse with your fingers without moving your arm, then this mouse might not be for you. Claw users love the precision and speed that we can move the mouse in games versus the whole-arm movement of palm users. If I need extra pixel by pixel precision such as Photoshop work, then as a claw user I can place my thumb and right 2 fingers on the mouse pad and slowly guide the mouse around.

If you are a palm grip user, skip this review and buy this mouse!

I use the mouse for long periods of time each day in apps like Firefox, Photoshop, Crysis, Call of Duty 4, work and general usage. I have many Microsoft mouses including the wireless optical 5000 and the natural mouse. I bought this mouse for its gaming features but forgot that as a claw user, we aren't in the majority thus mouses are usually not designed for us specifically.

As I grip the mouse, I find that the rubber grip is horrible for my thumb because the only place you can place it is in the depressed area. The plasticky grip is a bit better because the thumb area is flatter and easier to hold. However, I cannot find a truly comfortable way to claw it even after hours of adopting to it in Crysis.

I am definitely in the minority when I say I like a flat or even slightly protruding round surface for my thumb to grip instead of a caved in area. If the above describes you, I recommend you skip this mouse and get the wireless optical 5000 mouse; you'll love it.

This mouse also does not contour to your hand's natural curve very well and forces you to turn your wrist counter-clockwise to accommodate its almost flat top, which I think is a step backwards. Ergonomically, this mouse rates below average.

See other better reviews about the features of this mouse, but one thing I love and wish was on other mouses is the wonderful feature to lower or increase the DPI with a physical button the mouse--on the fly. This proves invaluable in games: For example, when I am driving a tank in Crysis, I dial up the DPI to max so I can turn the turret faster; when I am zoomed in on the precision rifle, I dial it lower for pinpoint accuracy, all possible due to the button.

Customer Review: G9 vs G5
Summary: 4 Stars

I recently purchased a G5 gaming mouse Logitech G5 Laser Mouse (Blue/Black) for my home computer. I liked it so much that I decided to purchase a G9 for my laptop. The G9 has a couple of features that the G5 lacks including : interchangeable grips, the ability to change the display color and four DPI settings vs three. They share: weight addition and distribution, proper button placement preventing inadvertent changes during gameplay, and two different feeling scroll wheels --smooth and clunky (set by a switch on the bottom).

After a couple of weeks of use, I like both mice, but I prefer the G5 simply for the shape under my hand. For me, with my longer fingers, the G5 is a true palm mouse, and your palm rests on top of the tail end of the mouse; the G9 is more of a finger mouse and your palm is off the tail end and not really resting on the mouse. In short, I prefer the G5 for its larger size and profile. This is probably the reason I prefer the "precision cover", shown as the default cover in the product picture, for the G9, this rougher texture cover is wider and provides a more comfortable position for my thumb.

For both, I continue to like the ability to add weight, finding I like a heavy mouse. The accuracy and ability to change DPI is great. Both mice look great on my desk, although the cord (and the cords from other items) tend to add clutter.

Overall, I am very happy with both mice. Feature wise, and using them for regular computer work and game play, I think the G5 provides a very adequate feature set while the G9 provides more customization that you may or may not need.

As indicated, once you are in this price range for a "game mouse", it comes down to shape, size, and weight for me. As the prior user of many corded and wireless mice, I have discovered I like bigger, fatter, heavier mice.

For any mouse buyer, especially those considering paying over $40 for a game mouse, find somewhere to put your hands on one and see if you like it -- you may find, like me, you have a preference on size and shape.

Either the G5 or the G9, both are great choices. Or just buy both!

Customer Review: The G9 brought me to a new level of Gaming
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this mouse for a month now, and still haven't tapped into the full extent this mouse has to offer. I've only programmed the mouse for one game setting, and the normal PC mode mouse (non-gaming).

I spend a good amount of time on my PC playing Guild Wars (MMORPG). I have also recently purchased The Witcher (RPG) and have tested out the mouse on this game, which has quite a vast difference in controls then Guild Wars. The ability to press a button to increase your DPI to lightning response time or gear is down for slower precise movements is a great feature to have.
For anyone who plays action games or FPS this is a great mouse to have, raising it to 2000 DPI can give you that needed edge in response time. Also the ability to set individual profiles as well as save them onto the mouse for on the go use is great for mobile gamers. Don't mind your friends rig, but hate his mouse? No worries saved your beefed up personal setting with you in your mouse and tear it up no matter where you are.

Comfort Factor:
I have carpel tunnel, and playing with this mouse has eased (NOT CURED) the pain and discomfort I have from it vs. my old very generic standard mouse. The width of it makes for a very comfortable fit. I like that it has inter-changeable grips, however I prefer the rough grip vs. the smooth. I tended to slide off the mouse with the smooth grip, and it made it a little more uncomfortable to do anything with it. The weights that ship with the mouse definitely add a spin to things. Raising and lowering your DPI is one thing, now setting that comfort zone for how much resistance you mouse offers is cool. Right now the mouse is loaded up with all the weights, its nice to have that weight behind it to balance out the DPI changes. A lot better then swinging about those lighter than air plastic Mice.

All and all I would definitely recommend this mouse to other gamers. Whether your a beast and need godly precise and reaction time or you a casual user who just needs something to fit just right in your hand. This mouse is for you...
