Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech G9 Laser Mouse

Customer Review: Perfection!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have cycles where some months I'll play first-person shooters 5 hours a day. It's usually this 1 game and all I do in that game is snipe, usually battles against other snipers where we're both constantly strafing. This type of play demands quicker and more accurate aiming than anything else. My mouse of choice for such situations: the G9. I've tried the Razer DeathAdder and the Lachesis, and both are good, no doubt. But the G9 just can't be matched. The perfect fit in your hand, the perfect weight, the perfect button placement, and by perfect I mean perfect. I won't even buy the G10 if it comes out, because there's no way the G9 can be improved. I suppose there might be some people who would like to be able to make it a little heavier. Personally I think logitech got the weights right but maybe the G10 will have more weight options, and maybe it will have more mouse fits, to satisfy people on extreme ends of the spectrum. A lighter coord would be the only real improvement, but that would probably be very difficult to make considering how light the G9's coord already is. Its coord, made of some fiber unlike normal wires, is lighter than any other mouse' and resists your mouse pointer less than any other mouse. However, the tug is still there (give the mouse a small push in all 4 directions, most likely in at least 1 direction there will be a bouncing effect where the pointer comes back a little bit). But a Razer coord holder will fix that (it might take a some playing around but eventually you'll find the perfect arrangement where the bounce will be gone).

Besides the feel, the stats, and the ultralight coord, perhaps the best feature is the super-easy sensitivity adjustment. The Razer mice have this too but not as nice as the G9's. 5 different customizable levels, displayed by a light of customizable color, switch between them by a simple + or - click. This is very helpful during a game. When you're aiming from different distances, or zoomed in at different magnifications, it is a significant advantage to be able to adjust your sensitivities accordingly. G9 lets you do this with such ease that you can do it in the middle of a gunfight. I'm able to switch in between shots. Granted, if you're in a gunfight where you have no free moment to take your finger off the left-click (the location of the +/- buttons requires it), then you won't be able to switch. But the only time that would happen is in a close-combat gunfight, and that you wouldn't need to switch sensitivities anyway.

Bottom line: if you're a serious FPS player, this is the #1 most important thing you should get to improve your game.

Also if you're not a gamer but are looking for the best mouse anyway, this is still the one to get. My hand is spoiled--whenever I put my hand on another mouse, it's uncomfortable for the first few minutes until my hand gets used to it. Whereas, if I use another mouse for a long period of time, then use a G9, there's no need to get used to it because it's so natural and comfortable.

Therefore, 5 stars

Customer Review: Ehhhh!
Summary: 2 Stars

I really wanted to like this mouse. I've used the G7 for 3 years now and I absolutely love it. Unfortunately my G7 began to interpret single clicks as double clicks, and I was back in the market for a mouse.

I chose to go with the G9 this time because of its amazing "on paper" specs, as well as the glowing reviews on various sites, which really had me waiting at the bottom of the driveway for the package to show up :)

Unfortunately, no cigar.

The major problem for me was that most of the features listed on the box, ended up either not mattering to me personally or they just didn't work as well as I might have liked.

First, as another reviewer said - the choices of adjustable grips are between "tiny and pretty small". My G7 fits my hand like it was custom designed for it. The G9 seems to have been designed for much, much smaller hands.

Second, the micro gear wheel with the ratchet turned off is a great idea. Except that it takes a whole different set of fine motor skills to use effectively. Worse, the scroll wheel in "friction less" mode is truly friction-less - so you end up accidentally scrolling or zooming (if your control key happens to be depressed) when you least expect it. I'm not sure if my mouse wheel was just defective (it happens) because some of the others seem to particularly like this feature above all else.

Third, the weight tuning is something I ended up not caring for in the very least. I tried different combinations to see if it mattered - but it really honestly didn't. Maybe I'm just not the mouse connoisseur I thought I was.

Fourth, customizable LED display colors seems cool in theory - but again, I can't remember the last time that LED color was a deal breaker for me. I set it to blue and was done. I could have set it to red too. Or green. Or mauve (well, I'm not sure what mauve looks like, but you get the point.)

Fifth, the shape of the mouse resembles a pack of cards rather than the smooth filled curves of the G7. I couldn't make this feel natural no matter how hard I tried.

I really could go on.

So was there anything I liked? Actually, yes. I liked that it had on board memory for user profiles. I liked the texture of the grips and how they form fit the mouse itself. I liked the SetPoint software on Windows XP, which was real easy to use. I liked the non fray-able heavy duty cord that connects the mouse to the USB port. I liked the fact that it does have 9 buttons - if you count carefully (the scroll wheel is 3 buttons by itself). The harder part was to remember what each of those mappings did :(

Unfortunately, the positives didn't quite outweigh the negatives and I made the decision to go get myself a new G7 instead.

As with any ergonomics product, the choice of mouse is entirely a personal decision. So, the stars I've given it are a review of how well this mouse works with my hand and my temperament, and is not intended as an engineering review of the standalone product.

Customer Review: Amazing
Summary: 4 Stars

While other places have this mouse as low as $75, Amazon was able to make it even more affordable! Other than that, the mouse in of itself is great. The ability to custom weigh your mouse is definitely great. Just for fun, I tried seeing if it really made a difference and put all the weighs in and that was definitely not the bext setting for me. After some trial and error I was able to find the adequate amount of weight for it. I thought that the removable covers were a bit excessive for a mouse, but trust me, once you get used to them you just can't explain to yourself how you ever made without them! The satin finish on the "non-gaming" cover is definitely very comfortable, and the "gaming" cover is made of a material that doesn't slip with sweat and is much smaller. My hand would get cramped if I would always had that one on, so it's nice to have an option to remove it and use a separate one. The bottom switch for the "veloci-scroll" and the regular screw scroll makes it very nice to scroll through webpages with the flick of a finger or to be very precise between chaning weapons and such in games. The profiles are very much appreciated as it can help the mouse be separate from Gamin and other functions and the LEDs are definitely a must. Holding this mouse in your hand definitely makes you feel like you're going to p0wn by just weilding it (and it does happen too!). Anyone that sees it, even non-gamers, compliment me on the finesse of the mouse, and it's got a very sturdy deisgn. The settings under the SetPoint software are also very detailed and you can go as far as setting up the Y and X axes on the mouse independantly... I know!
Now, not everything is good on this mouse. I think that the main gripe with it (other than the price, but it's really worth it) is that a lot of buttons are just not recognized by my programs/games. I come from an S510 mouse and I used to be able to side scroll left and right with the wheel in Windows Media Center, and no matter how many settings I mess around with I just can't get it to do it with this mouse. Also, in some games when I set up certain buttons, they either won't show up or they won't work or they won't be recognized by the game. That's really disappointing because the many buttons on this mouse - I think - make up about 20% or so of the value. Overall though, that is somewhat minor and no on really wants to assign button presses to the left and right scroll wheel, but in some games I wish that functionality did exist. It was hard getting used to the mouse at first - it's shape, speed, precision - but I honestly don't even remember exactly how much it bothered me, that satisfied am I with the product so far (it's been roughly two months).
If you are looking at this porduct, it's obviously because you have the budget to purchase it, and if that's the case, there really is no reason why you should not get it, unless you're looking for extreme mods, in which case, you won't find them in Amazon.

Customer Review: Great Gaming Mouse, and Versatile Too
Summary: 5 Stars

I've owned the G9 for a little under a year now, and boy am I impressed. I got it as a gaming mouse because I do tend to play PC games online, and my old mouse (a Razer gaming mouse) was not working properly. (My experience with Razer was great when it worked, but it broke down much faster than other mice I've used in the past.)

This mouse is sort of an adjustable size. I say this because its actual body is small, but it has "covers" which make the mouse feel larger in your hand, while still providing access to all the buttons on the mouse as well. I opt to use it with the smooth cover because it feels good in my hand, and is the right size for my large grip. Some may prefer the textured grip instead, but that's something you'd need to try for yourself to find out.

The mouse comes with adjustable weight as well, with a pack of weights that can be swapped in and out of the mouse if you prefer. Honestly, I'm the primary user of the mouse, so after the first day of trying out different weights and how they feel, I've never done it again. It's very nice to be able to fine-tune the weight of the mouse depending on what application you have for it.

I have two key features that made me absolutely FALL IN LOVE with this mouse. The first, which is one of the features I bought the mouse for, was that the G9 can switch profiles on the fly. And that doesn't mean "roll the sensitivity up or down and the Logitech software calibrates the settings". I was incredibly happy to see that this works on ANY computer. The multiple profiles are stored inside the mouse, so that I can plug it into any computer and switch between sensitivity profiles with the click of a button. This is fantastic for me because for gaming I need high speed, but in Photoshop and other applications, I need high levels of precision. Thankfully this mouse performs great with BOTH scenarios!

The second feature, which I took for granted at first, is the braided USB cable that links the mouse to the computer. I really could not be happier with this cable except if the mouse was cordless and the cable didn't exist! (But I wanted the cable due to gaming, latency, etc.) The braided wire feels extremely sturdy and resilient, more than any other USB cable I've used before. It feels like the type of connection that will mean my mouse never dies from cable issues. Additionally, I do use this mouse with a laptop, and even when traveling with it, I have NEVER had the cable tangle at all (except at the fault of other cables tangling around it) where other cables tangle quite easily due to excessive flexibility.

Overall I could not be happier with this mouse. The only thing that would be advantageous would be creating the same gaming experience in a wireless setting, but latency is a bit of an issue there, so until then, I HIGHLY recommend the Logitech G9.

The first is

Customer Review: All-around excellent product

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
As primarily a MMORPG and RTS (Real Time Strategy) player, I was a little intimidated when reading the feature set of the the G9 because I wasn't sure if the features would be easy to understand and implement. When it arrived, I was somewhat concerned about the shape and feel of the mouse as well.

After about a week with the G9, however, I can say that it is a fantastic product. The ability to control the sensitivity levels on-the-fly (via a small +/- button just below the Left button) is perfect for RTS games ('Company of Heroes' and 'World In Conflict') where effective camera movement is essential for success. It's also helpful when playing different games of the same genre with their varying camera response times.

The grip of the mouse took a little time to get used to. I wouldn't mind if the mouse were slightly longer for larger hands, and if the right hand side of the mouse were slightly wider to rest my entire hand on. But having gotten used it it, I can't think of returning to a less capable mouse for gaming.

The small included weights for the mouse body were another option I was iffy about. But when combined with sensitivity selection, the weights add appreciable heft for shooters where you want more precision and no jittering crosshairs on the screen.

Finally, when using the G9 with a Web browser or application, three pre-programmed profiles change up the functionality of the two up/down buttons on the far left side. In one profile they serve as forward/back buttons; in another they adjust the size of the text. The scroll wheel is also selectable between the traditional ratcheted wheel and a perfectly weighted free moving wheel, so you can zip to the tops and bottoms of long posts or pages without any effort.

My only problem so far - which doesn't do anything to how much I've appreciated the mouse - is with the included Logitech software. SetPoint doesn't seem to work on my XP machine. In fact, when it this software is installed, I can't use the mouse at all, and SetPoint doesn't recognize that I have the G9 plugged in. (I have SetPoint Beta Build #127). Fortunately, the mouse runs fine without the software. When the G9 SetPoint software goes "live," I'll give it another try.

In sum, this is an excellent gaming mouse whose initially intimidating feature set has proven to be smoother and more effectively implemented than I thought it might be. Logitech has always made excellent controllers, in my opinion, and this continues that trend.

Highly recommend.
