Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech G51 Surround Sound 5.1 Speaker System (Black)Customer Review: Logitech Speakers- A great Buy Summary: 5 Stars
I received my new Logitech G51 5.1 Surround Speakers about two weeks ago in the mail, and so far I love them. It makes gaming a lot nicer; the sound quality is just fabulous. Here are some pros and cons about the speakers.
Pros:
The speakers have excellent sound quality, even when the volume is turned to max.
The speakers have adjustable sound controls (i.e. more subwoofer, more surround, more in center)
The speakers have a control pod that sits on your desk, allowing for easy volume/specific sound control
The speakers have plenty of cord, so there is no problem putting them behind/to the side of you.
The speakers have a re-usable Velcro straps to wrap up unused cord
The speakers' cords' ends are plugged directly into the subwoofer, and a cord is included to connect the subwoofer to the computer. There are options that can adapt to 2 port sound card also, so no worries.
There are ports directly in the control pod for a headset/microphone
The control pod has three pre-programmed settings for gaming, music, and just in general. They make a big difference, and they work very well.
All the speakers have nice mounts, sitting upright. They also have the attachments to mount the to the wall, for better surround system. The center speaker also has a special mount so it can mount very well on a flat screen monitor, no screws or nails.
Cons:
The speakers messed up my music at first, until I figured out all the settings to make my music better. That took an hour or so of fiddling with the console and sound controls.
When reading the directions, it was hard to figure out where the English directions were. They were all jumbled in with the Spanish and French directions. Once you found the English, however, they were very clear and easy to follow.
The center speaker made no noise when I first got it, and I had to turn the "center" channel to max, and had to adjust all the other levels accordingly.
The cons were definitely outweighed by the pros, and they are all resolved by now anyway. All in all, this is a great speaker set; I definitely recommend it.
Customer Review: Pros and Cons of the Logitech G51 5.1 Summary: 4 Stars
These are quite honestly the best computer speakers I've ever own. The quality you come to expect from Logitech is only matched by their products performance.
Pro's
Central Control Pod which controls muting, volume, bass, and microphone - No more reaching around the CPU tower to plug/unplug my headset and microphone, or finding a mute button for whatever application I'm using. Its all right there at a convenient centrally located device.
Matrix sound compared to music sound - Adds an extra dimension of sound that heightens play enjoyment. With the surround sound it really makes you feel closer to being in the battle.
Uniform sound quality - The quality of each speaker meshes so well with each other that it's often difficult to decipher which sounds are coming out of which speaker when you're sitting right in the middle of it all.
Moding capabilities - Though a small pleasure, the moding capability to alter the look of each individual speaker is an added bonus. Not a necessity, and definitely not the selling feature, but it adds some flare for aesthetic enjoyment.
Con's
Not wireless - The one real disappointment with the speakers is that they are not wireless. I don't mind that the front speakers and bass unit have wires, but the rear speakers have wires dangling from them which travel along the floor. It doesn't look very appeasing, and it becomes a small hassle as I have to pull my rear speakers forward and put them on my desk when I'm finished using them. If they were wireless I'd just attach them to my back wall and forget about them.
Ease of attaching rear speakers to walls - While they aren't difficult to attach to the wall per se, it does require slightly more effort than I would've liked. I feel like there is a small design flaw in the fact that I have to use a screw driver to twist the speaker to aim it down at my gaming station. It should've had a simpler hinge design that allows for aiming the speakers in any direction I wanted.
Customer Review: Kick Butt Summary: 5 Stars
I just bought a new Dell XPS M1530, which has 5.1 surround sound support. So I decided to get this speaker system. I have an older Samsung DVD 5.1 which I now hate, due to its underpowered Subwoofer and crackling speakers. This system is built around the subwoofer, with all the ports on the back of it. It is controlled by 1 control pad, which is very simple to use. It has multiple inputs, for Red/White RCA connectors, which I use for my Xbox. And it has a microphone and a headphone jack on the control panel. Sound quality is amazing, ranging to classical, to hardcore metal. I had to take pictures off my wall, as I was afraid they would fall. I can hear music anywhere in my house as well. The sub is amazing. The ability to adjust the volume of the sub, center, and surround speakers helps a lot. It also has 2 matrix modes, redirecting the sound to better suit what you are using it for. Gaming is excellent with it, hearing bullets behind you, etc. You can also create custom artwork to make the speakers look different.
My biggest complaint would be the matrix modes. They really detract from music in my opinion. They are of course, optional. Gaming is excellent with it. Also the satellite speaker wires are a bit too shot, but you can extend them with some small adapters from Radio Shack. Be sure that your sound card has 3 outputs that support surround sound, otherwise, this system is pointless. I had a problem when I first got the speakers, but it was my configuration settings in Windows.
Customer Review: Horrible for music. Summary: 2 Stars
These are fine (the subwoofer is great) if you're going to use them for sources where the audio is already mixed for a 5.1 setup (gaming or watching DVDs), but horrible when it comes to music.
There are basically two options for music - a basic mode in which stereo is delivered solely by the two front satellites (which works fine, but then why bother with a 5.1 speaker system?), or the "Music Matrix" mode which supposedly "enhances stereo music" (sounds like a great idea; in practice it ruins the music) by converting it to 5.1 surround sound.
What this "Music Matrix" mode tries to do is break down the stereo signal into the different channels represented by the 5.1 - which sounds great, but in practice just seems to shift the high-range audio to the rear satellites. The result is front speakers lacking treble and rear speakers lacking bass. This might be fine if it did this consistently, but it doesn't. You can hear parts of songs shift noticeably from the front to the rear and back (imagine a single drum beat being split into sections so that it resembles static - very distracting), and for no apparent reason.
I tried using these to replace my old Altec Lansing ADA 885 system, but I can't handle such poor quality audio. I'm trying the higher-end Logitech Z-5500 next - hopefully those will do better on the hardware decoding front.
Customer Review: Logitech G51: Great sound for the money Summary: 5 Stars
These are really cool speakers. Not only for gamers as they have been advertised. I have tested them with music as well. I have played rock, classical, and country. Their music performance was outstanding. I got to hear sounds that I had not heard before when playing music CD's. True surround sound even in recordings that had not been recorded for multiple channels. They are simply great speakers for the money.
This set has a button on the right side of the control pod that switches on two matrices: one for games, and one for music. The music matrix does not have as much of an effect on the back speakers. It seems that the sound is distributed equally when the music matrix is on. Upon pressing the gaming matrix, you will notice that the Bass unit and the rear speakers seem to have an extra power. Explosions are very realistic on this system. During one such explosion in the game Myst V: End of ages, the breaking stuff was heard on my right speaker first, then quickly on the left and as the smoke rose, the sound went to the back speakers and I heard other stuff breaking at different tones and volume.
This convinced me that these speakers are an enhancement to the life of a gamer. Not to mention the fact they are attractive to look at on my desk. I am glad I bought these speakers from Amazon. My gaming life has improved.
