Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard (Black)

Customer Review: Decent, but not great.
Summary: 3 Stars

I just got this board and haven't been using it long. But I have a few question for you to ask yourself before you buy it and spend this much money.

1. If you need to remap keys using the macro function, you can use free software that will allow your to do the same thing, even in games, for ANY key on ANY keyboard. The free software will even allow you to use mouse movement and clicks when making a macro--which this board will not do. You can even use the number pad keys if you want, F keys, anything.

2. Do you need the G keys given the above explanation about macro keys and software?

3. Do you need the LCD display? Why?

So that's my conundrum. I could buy the 12 dollar illuminated Microsoft keyboard and use a free third party macro recorder and get nearly the same functionality for 12 bucks--minus the G keys and LCD.

If I'm missing something this board does that I cannot do using a third party macro builders, please comment so I don't send this thing back prematurely.

Now, on with several other things I don't like.

1. Keys seem a little smaller or closer together than other boards I've used, but that is probably because they use the full sized keys instead of the half sized MS uses, and others.

2. It's much harder to type with than the split keyboards, for me, so if you like the split boards, you'll hate this one.

3. The volume controls near the LCD are dead. They feel like you're pushing on the side of the board, not keys, and they're small. They could have easily been twice the size and not affected any spacing on the board. They could have also been much more sensitive.

4. Illumination is poor in that you cannot set it bright enough and the illumination is not nearly even across the board. Some keys BLARE and others are hard to read. You get three settings, off, low, higher, and that's it.

It's not a bad board, but I'm just wondering why? If it didn't have the G keys it would just be a very expensive illuminated board, since free software makes any board a macro board. It could have been much better if you had the option to name your macros AND have them listed in the LCD--now that would have been perhaps worth the extra green:
(example)
LCD Display
G1: Change to stealth, reload.
G2: Open Photoshop

I also don't think you can remap any keys except the G keys, which is odd, and makes the macro builder that comes with the G15 pretty lame in itself, since free software macro builders do that.

There is something in the G15's software that says "Display macro on LCD" but I haven't figured it out yet, which brings me to my final point.

No manual.

I may not have this thing figured out well enough yet to write a legitimate review, but most of the third party free macro builders you can download are so easy you don't need to "figure them out." At this point, I would say if you don't need the LCD or the G keys, buy a 12 dollar illuminated board, download a free macro builder--which will also record your mouse moves and clicks--and you're done. You have 95% of the functionality of the G15 plus a bonus: You can record in your macros not only keys but mouse movements too, and remap ANY key on your keyboard.
