Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Alto Express Notebook StandCustomer Review: Avg. = 4stars, 5 stars = quality, 3 stars = usability Summary: 4 Stars
Review like this is somewhat subjective, so please keep in mind that this is strictly one person's opinion. I have DELL Inspiron 6400 notebook (15.4" screen), which I love and use for all my work. But my posture was not good using the laptop, so I needed a laptop stand that would elevate the laptop so that I could have convenient eye-angle and better posture. So I purchased Logitech Alto Express Notebook Stand.
QUALITY:
1. Excellent quality. Sturdy plastic with non-slippery grip on the bottom of the edges. Notebook does not wobble when it is rested on it. Very stable.
2. Sleek and contemporary design. Because it is transparent, you do not really notice it, since it is not bigger than the laptop.
3. Well-designed, in the middle of the stand, there is a curved concave which let the hot air from the notebook escape.
USABILITY:
1. It is NOT adjustable. This is a big drawback. I am 5' 8" male using standard sized desk and chair. Yet, when I placed the nootbook, the screen placement seems little too high. After using the product a couple of hours, I had neck pain and upper back strain. I tried to adjust myself, but of no avail. If you are shorter than 5'8" then I do not recommend this product. You should seriously consider purchasing adjustable laptop stand.
2. Another issue I found is that once you place the notebook on the stand, the laptop screen will be farther than what you use to. Since you must also purchase external keyboard to put it in front of the stand, you push back your laptop further. It wasn't easy reading things on the screen.
In sum, I went back using the laptop without the stand. Again, this is a high quality product, but the usability is limited because it is not adjustable. Especially, for a person whose height is 5'8" or under, this product MAY NOT be right. Consider adjustable stand.
Customer Review: This is the one to choose ... seriously Summary: 5 Stars
I was concerned from the product photo that the Logitech Alto Express Notebook Stand wouldn't raise my notebook high enough, so I was tempted to go for one of the adjustable stands. I am very happy I chose the Logitech. The angle could not be more perfect, the manufacturer obviously knew exactly what was ergonomically correct when they designed the stand, the center of my screen is exactly in the middle of my field of view. When in use, the stand basically disappears. Despite a ridiculously high price for a piece of plastic, it does exactly what it should, so to me it was worth the price. The adjustable stands I've seen are fussy and wobbly. In particular, the xbrand has small wheels that could send the notebook flying off the edge of the desk if it is accidentally bumped. Almost every other brand raises the front edge too high. Some, like the xbrand have trap doors you have to open to access front-mounted controls. I think many manufacturers take a simple concept and try to complicate it. That is one thing no one will ever pin on Logitech! This stand is a totally simple design. My home office is probably a bit stylish but I absolutely need functionality ... I work at my computer 12 - 14 hours a day. I hated using my notebook before, now with an HP wireless keyboard and mouse and the Logitech Alto Express Notebook Stand I hardly know I'm not using my desktop PC. I think this notebook stand is the winning entry.
PROS: Perfect viewing angle, rock-solid support, looks beautiful
CONS: Hey, it's a three-dollar piece of plastic with an insane profit margin, but I'd rather pay more for something that is perfect than something that misses the mark.
Customer Review: Great but for a couple things.. Summary: 4 Stars
My laptop is my primary computer at home, and I play a lot of Guild Wars with my husband. The constant looking down began to cause me severe neck pain so I wanted a simple stand to bring the laptop screen to eye level. With Amazon's discount it was reasonably priced and, above all, simple. However, after using it for a couple months I realized a couple things that could make it much better and I am considering replacing this one.
First, the lips at the base designed to keep the laptop on the stand are not high enough despite the rubbery grip. I have a 17" HP laptop, and it's pretty heavy. If I move the stand a bit, or even lean my palms on it while typing, it can slip off the stand. This may not be an issue for smaller laptops. Additionally, there is not enough space between the two lips for my off-center latch (to open the laptop) to be easily accessed. Second, the heat from the laptop does seem more noticeable. I think perhaps the mesh screen stand models would help alleviate this.
Pros
Simple & unobtrusive looking
Lightweight, good height level
Cons
Lips too low
No venting for the heat
It's worth mentioning that these stands are not great for ergonomic typing. The keyboard is angled to allow the screen to be raised - for casual web surfers, or game playing that relies on a mouse, this is no problem. However, people who need to do a lot of typing may want to consider an external monitor or other docking station rather than angle their wrists improperly.
Customer Review: Good for a $5 sale Summary: 4 Stars
When I bought this laptop stand it was on sale for $5 which is important, because I don't think it has given me $20 of value. It does everything what it's meant to do: angle my laptop at about 30 degrees and look nice. My laptop is a 16" wide screen which fits securely: The laptop's feet don't rest on the stand, but the stand's base has grip so it doesn't slide. Additionally, there's space beneath the stand that's easily reached from the side because of its shape.
For cooling purposes I'm not sure if this stand would be what I would want, it dips in the back to allow for some airflow, but it does not allow for intake at the sides, and the flow would be in from the back. If your laptop is one that is prone to overheating (like my roommate's) then it wouldn't be practical as he'd be better off putting it up on books for better airflow underneath (as a 1" duct may be insufficient, especially if your hot air blows out the back, or cool air is taken in from the side, or your hotspots aren't directly in the middle).
However, for keeping your laptop in one place and giving it a little bit of an angle and a lift then it's great (for $5).
Customer Review: Not good for early '08 MacBook Pro Summary: 1 Stars
Since I use my early 2008 MacBook Pro as a desktop replacement, it was in my best interest to get some sort of a stand for my laptop if I didn't want to strain my neck/back. So I decided to go with Logitech Alto Express, as it looked neat and it was inexpensive, too.
Unfortunately, when I placed my MBP on the stand I pushed the lid all the way back (well, as much as I could - I didn't want to risk breaking it), yet it still wasn't enough - the screen wasn't perpendicular to my desk, which made the viewing experience unpleasant. I had to raise the front part of the stand for about 1.6 inch, till the viewing angle was right.
I'm sure this stand might work perfectly with some other laptops (where the lid can be pushed further backwards), but it was a failure for me and my MBP. It could work with books underneath the front part of it, but then again, what's the point in doing that?
In short, I regret to say that I cannot recommend this stand. I returned it just today and decided to invest more money and get a mStand instead.
