Customer Review: works with powerbook OS X 10.3.9 and iChatUSB

Having spent $125 once for an iSight I was looking for a cheap alternative. Macs present two
problems. First, with systems earlier than Tiger and Leopard (yes, we're still out there) iChat won't run with USB cameras (only firewire cameras). Fortunately there is nice third party software (iChatUSB) available for $10 (with a free demo version so that you can test it). Second, Logitech doesn't supply a proper driver. But there is an open source driver (macam) available from sourceforge. So the steps are 1) buy the camera, 2) download the driver and 3) download iChatUSB. The camera quality is nothing to write home about, but then presumably you're video chatting home so they can see for themselves. Having been gouged by Apple on my first camera (and on batteries) I get extra pleasure in using this camera. Ah yes, the clip works just fine.

During a visit, a friend from Amsterdam told us about Skype and how we could communicate for free. I found this webcam on Amazon and installed it and downloaded the free version of Skype. The camera/microphone provides a more than adequate picture and the microphone is quite sensitive. All in all an economical, good quality system for the Skype usage. It was fairly easy to install with the enclosed CD after I found that I had to do the installation with my computer on the internet. It would not install satisfactorily if not online. The camera and microphone have allowed many face to face conversations with our overseas friends. I am going to buy one each of these units for our 5 children so we may converse on Skype and see our Grandkids.Customer Review: Item received not as pictured online.

The camera I received was not the one pictured online. I purposely ordered a model that came with a stand rather than one that clips to the monitor, but that's what I got instead. I decided to give it a try anyway. First, I found it difficult to get the camera to stay where I wanted it to since I just sits on top of the monitor - there's no way to affix it firmly in place and the weight of the usb cable tends to pull it down. Also, the video it created was very choppy and out of sync with the sound. The model I ordered was supposed to take video at 30fps - I do not know if the camera I received had that capture rate or not. Regardless, it was unacceptable. If you are looking for an expensive webcam, search some more...This Quickcam does not look like the picture (see the customer image instead), is cheaply made and is not very functional either. It will not stay on the base = hassle, especially if you want to use it with a laptop. The set up took some figuring out. The manual (even though it comes in 16 languages!) is not intuitive/detailed enough. The image quality is just OK. I have seen better since (other Skype users) and wish I bought something else...

This is a great buy if you're just looking for a basic webcam for chats and so. The audio first of all is great. I've had no problems with that. It was easy to setup for immediate use. The clip for the monitor or laptop seems very practical, efficient and sturdy. I don't see it breaking or going bad in the foreseeable future. It definitely keeps the cam in place very well. Plus, it just looks great!
On the downaide, the video and picture quality is not the best, but for the price, it's acceptable.
