Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech 720p Webcam C905

Customer Review: Don't buy if your notebook has a narrow width display bezel
Summary: 1 Stars

I returned this product before even installing the driver.

While I suspect the quality of the electronics is great, the mechanical design could be improved. I bought the camera to use with a T43 ThinkPad notebook. Like most modern notebooks, the display bezel is rather thin, with only about 3/8 of an inch (1 cm) between the outer edge and the display. The mounting clip is near the center of the back of the camera. While it does allow the camera to swivel to center the image, it does not have any means to offset the mounting location. As such, about 3/4 of an inch (2 cm) of the camera body extended over the active area of the screen, blocking viewing anything which might be below it.

I suppose I could remove the camera when not in use, or move the active window around to avoid covering any information, but for a high end camera, I don't think that is a reasonable trade-off.

Bottom line - I would not recommend this camera for use on a notebook which has a narrow width bezel on the display.

Customer Review: Worst design, so-so software, great quality
Summary: 2 Stars

First bought a Microsoft webcam first but didn't work well with Yahoo IM! Then bought this after reading reviews.

Pros:
- video quality is good.
- you can create quick video files.

Cons:
- I have a Dell and an IBM laptop. The clip is not working well. Very poor design. It keeps moving from the edge of the screen. The grip is not strong either.
- You will not be able to use this webcam with a regular LCD since the screen edge thickness is more than 1/2 inch.
- Their software is very buggy. It takes over the Mic input. I have tried many combination in the last 2 days and as soon as I connect my headset, it stops working in Skype and Yahoo and MSN.
- Design again: there is no way to roate the webcam. No rotation axis.
- The great Lens (Zeiss) is very much unprotected. They should have created some kind of concave design like the Microsoft ones.

I still can't believe they missed the clip design that bad...

I do recommend Logitech but not this model.

Customer Review: Painful to set up especially with SKYPE, but once you're done it's great
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought one for me and one for my parents so they could see the grandkids growing up. I set up mine first so I could walk them through the process. I have a different computer than my parents do, so the steps to get it to work were not identical. I had to install the camera software, install Skype, then install updates to the camera software (rebooting the computer in between each install).

In order to get my parents to work, we had to go through the same process multiple times ... their anti-virus software tried to block the installation at several points, and we had to work around that. It took multiple telephone sessions with them and a lot of frustration to get it done.

But having said that, now that it's all set up and running, the quality of the video is GREAT. My brother has a cheaper Logitech bought from Walmart, and the picture quality is horrible. I'm going to try and convince him to get one of these instead (and then hope that he has the patience to walk through the steps to get it working).

Customer Review: Works out of the box in Linux!
Summary: 5 Stars

I prayed and prayed after I ordered this. I had previously checked out the linux uvc webcam [...]which might work, and this seemed like the 2007 model that is mentioned in the list.

After I got it, I ran to the laptop, heart pounding as I plugged it in. /var/log/messages confirmed that the USB identifier was just the one which was supported - 046d:0991. I started up ekiga and it straightaway showed my video. I fired up Skype, and it showed up as well. Even the microphone works! Just freaking awesome!

Those in the market for linux compatible webcams, be aware that most logitech webcams are marked in the linux uvc page as potentially having problems (including the famed pro 9000 model). Be careful and do your research before buying webcams. This one works! Picture quality is ok. I am not sure whether the video qualifies as HD as somebody has tagged this product with.

OS used: Ubuntu Linux 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex), but should work in all modern linux distros with uvc support.

Customer Review: One of the best WebCams there is
Summary: 4 Stars

Logitech's top three webcams, ProNotebook, Pro9000 and the Orbit use the same insides. So Quality wise the three are the same. Pro for Notebook is the most convenient one as it travels well. I am not too keen on the attaching clip as I have not yet found a convenient way of affixing it bar for the supplied stand. I use blue tak to affix it to my monitor or laptop. But that is not important. Primary use for me is for video communications over skype which incidentally gives the best performance. Logitech makes other webcams at lower price points and its true that if you are using it for IM most of the time, your IM partner benefits most since they see a better image and you won't if they have cheaper models. Long and short of it, its not worth going cheap, so hunt for the best deal you can get. Get two and give one to mom and dad. Its alot cheaper than flying over there!. Be careful with Logitech software, no piece of software is bug free. Always check for the latest on their web site before installing.
