Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech 720p Webcam C905Customer Review: Extremely easy to use Summary: 5 Stars
Installing this cam was the easiest thing ever. Literally. This is my first webcam... I bought this primarly for communicating with a family member who was traveling to Europe... she bought a netbook with a 1.3 mp built-in webcam, and we decided on using Skype to keep in touch, so I decided to purchase this cam so we could make videophone calls. I was using this cam on my desktop -- I opened the box, plugged in the USB, and that was it -- Skype immediately recognized it, and I didn't even have to install any drivers for this thing. (I'm using XP SP3, 32 bit). The only thing I had to do was tell Skype to use the mic on the webcam, instead of my headphone mic. The picture is clear, the sound is clear, no problems. This particular cam is portable (it comes with a little soft pouch to store the cam in), and it's intended for a laptop, but I'm using it for my desktop... it also comes with a little stand (12" tall) you can mount the cam to, and it just sits next to my monitor (the clip on the cam is not big enough so that it will mount directly on my 22" monitor, but no big deal). It's not top of the line -- from researching the Logitech site, it's more like 2nd or 3rd best in terms of quality, currently, but all in all, considering quality vs. price, I am very satisfied. It is more than adequate for my Skype videophone needs.
Customer Review: Mac Support and bringing a world closer together Summary: 4 Stars
I had this product on my wishlist, and my parents bought it for me for xmas. They also got one for themselves, so I was able to see and talk to them for xmas, even though I couldn't make it home. :) I've also had a video chat with my aunt and uncle. It was great to be able to see someone I'm talking to, who's 2500 miles away. :)
Although this product is not officially supported on Macs, it does work as long as you have 10.4.something or higher. You just plug it in, and it works. Skype picked it up and started working. It doesn't allow all of the features, cause there is no Logitech supported software for this camera on the mac. But it will work as a basic camera and microphone right out of the box. :) The lack of Logitech support for the Mac in general is why this lost 1 star for me. There is no good reason for them NOT to update their existing software for the mac to support this, but they didn't.
One other use I found for it is work. I often go into the office and use the whiteboard with a few other people. Most times, it would be very helpful if other people were in the room, that can't be. So I did a basic test, and was able to point the camera at a whiteboard, and share it with others. At the high resolution, the refresh rate is bad, but it doesn't matter with a static white board. ;)
Customer Review: Logitech C905 Webcam Summary: 5 Stars
Nice webcam, works well, although I'm not sure if the low light function is working properly. This is a second Logitech webcam I've installed on a desktop and with both I had problems getting the microphone to function. The same may hold true for a laptop that doesn't have a built in webcam. There's nothing in the instruction explaining how to activate the microphone. In Windows XP, here's how to activate the microphone for use with Skype:
1) At the lower right of your screen, you will see a bunch of little icons.
Right click on the little speaker (round-looks like a radio speaker) icon.
2) Select "Adjust Audio Properties" from the drop down menu
3) Click on the "Audio" tab at the top of the pop up window
4) In the middle of the pop up window, you will see "Sound Recording". You
will see your sound card ID listed in the box. Click on the little arrow to
the right
5) From the pop down menu you should see "Logitech Webcam" listed. Please
note that the webcam must be plugged in and installed before you will see
the Logitech webcam listed. Click on it. "Logitech webcam" should now
appear in the box.
6) Then click "O.K." at the bottom.
7) Do the echo test again in Skype and the webcam microphone should now
work.
Customer Review: Good webcam except with Skype video calls Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the Logitech C905 webcam because the netbook (Asus EeePC 1005HA) that I bought my son for Christmas only has a .3 megapixel webcam built in (why they didn't put a 1.3MP webcam in like most other netbooks I looked at, I don't know but it was still the best netbook I found within the price range.) I video chat with him on Skype almost daily, but his mom needs to use her computer and worries about him damaging it (he is almost 3, but already knows how to do some things on the computer.)
So I bought the new (2MP)webcam thinking that it would improve the video quality. I also upgraded the RAM. When I installed the webcam and tried a test video call between his computer and mine, the video quality was initially very good. Then after about 10-15 seconds, it seemed as though the webcam reset itself and suddenly the video quality (on both ends) became horribly pixelated and wouldn't get better. So then I tried using the built in webcam again and had the same problem. It wasn't until I uninstalled the Logitech webcam that I stopped having this problem.
I don't know if the problem is caused by the latest version of Skype, the fact that it is on a netbook, or some flaw with the Logitech hardware or software. I guess we will have to settle for the built in webcam until I find a better solution.
Customer Review: Great camera, well worth the additional money! Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this after reading numerous reviews of all the current web cams. We were hoping to only spend about $40 on a camera as there seemed to be many brand name options out there in that price range. After reading about all the people who had taken back many of the $40 options and the rave reviews on this one we decided to get this camera. It is easy to setup and works great. We did have to download the latest software from Logitech, as the software on the CD would not install on our computer, but that was easy enough. All our family said the image quality was great, so we suggested they get the same camera. Unfortunately no one else purchased the same camera. While the image we see of them is acceptable it looks horrible compared to what they see of us. We even did a side by side comparison when they came to visit, and this camera is well worth the extra $35 if you are buying it on Amazon vs local prices of other cameras like the Microsoft one.
About the only thing that bothers me is when I clip it to our laptop I often press the button on top of the camera and it snaps a still shot. Otherwise I am very happy we chose to spend the extra money and get the best camera we could. At least our family can see our daughter perfectly, even if we can't see them as well.
