Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech 2.4 GHz Cordless Presenter (Black)Customer Review: Free youself from your laptop! Summary: 5 Stars
As a research scientist, I am accustomed to giving presentations at lab meetings, lectures, and academic conferences. Those of us that rely on our laptop and laser pointer can now get excited by a number of wireless presentation controls that have recently become available. The Logitech presenter is one such product that allows you to navigate your presentations (Microsoft Powerpoint or Apple's Keynote) from a small remote control and therefore frees you from being tethered to your laptop. This 'freedom' might not sound like much, but it is something that I cherish. When presenters have to be in close proximity to their laptops in order to advance slides, there is a tendency to stare at the laptop screen rather than at the audience that they are addressing.
Like some other wireless control devices on the market, the Logitech Presenter contains a laser pointer and also neatly stores the USB adapter within the control when not in use. However, it distinguishes itself from its competition by including a built in countdown timer with LCD display. This useful feature lets you set your desired talk time and then discreetly reminds you by vibrating when time is about to run out. The alarm vibrates with 5 minutes and then 2 minutes to go. No more glances at the watch or staring across the lecture theatre to see if there is a clock on the far wall. Set-up is straightforward and the remote also features controls for starting/stopping your presentation and blanking the screen (these features are Powerpoint specific though with some minor customization you can get the remote to start/stop Keynote presentations too).
I use this device and I think it is great. It is comfortable to hold and now means I can fully concentrate on interacting with my audiences.
Customer Review: Essential for Every Powerpoint Presenter Summary: 5 Stars
I have seen countless speakers who stop what they are saying, walk back to their machine, look at the keyboard to find the right key, and press it... every time they want to advance to the next slide, or even the next bullet on a build. It looks really unprofessional.
You will become a smoother presenter with this device (and a little knowledge of your slides). Without looking, without the audience noticing, the slide advances when you click a button. With practice you will do this while you are speaking. Complex builds are easy to synchronize, making them practical and effective.
I am a professional speaker ("SOA Evangelist"), and I cannot imagine presenting without one of these. At this price everyone who even occasionally speaks can afford to own one, and I recommend you get one if you ever present with Powerpoint.
The batteries last a long time - handy, since I sometimes forget to switch it off, yet it is still going strong after several months. It has many great features beyond slide advancing: a built-in laser pointer, ability to temporarily hide the slide and restore, several other features that I don't use. The range is at least 50 feet (15 meters). The included Bluetooth USB adapter stores in the pointer body when not in use, making it harder to lose.
The only negative, and it's minor, is that I cannot figure out how to avoid using the Bluetooth USB adapter. My laptop has built-in Bluetooth, so it should be able to use this device directly without the adapter. Also, you should know that this is not really a mouse - there's no way to move the cursor with this device.
I have had three wireless presentation devices over the past 6 years, and this is by far the best of them.
Customer Review: Highly Recommended Summary: 5 Stars
To put it simply, this thing rocks!
The thing I like most about it:
- You can plug this into any Windows machine and it works right away.
Other things I like:
- The USB receiver plugs into the body of the presenter itself. As another reviewer mentioned earlier, it can be easy to put it back in the wrong way, but once you make a mental note of it, that shouldn't be a problem.
- The built-in laser pointer is great.
- All the buttons work as advertised and they are thoughtfully placed so you can breeze through your presentation with ease.
- The case that comes with it is nice.
- There's a battery indicator that tells you how much battery is left.
Some things that you may or may not like:
- Your PowerPoint window must be in focus (i.e. - it has to be the active window) in order for the presentation launch button to work. This seems like a "duh" kind of thing but it happens.
- The official specs say Windows and MS PowerPoint only. I haven't really had a chance to try it on a Mac but if I do, I'll try to remember to update this review.
- This device is not a mouse. If you do a lot of "mousing" in your presentations, you may want to opt for one of those cordless gyro mice.
- The price seems a little high, but I expensed mine so for me, it was a great business investment.
- I have not tried this on any other presentation software (i.e. - OpenOffice) so if you use anything other than MS PowerPoint, you may want to check. Remember, the official specs say MS PPT only but who knows...
To summarize, I love it because it does what it says it will do and so far it has been flawless. If you can expense it, it's a great investment.
Customer Review: Excellent Remote Presenter Summary: 5 Stars
I read most of the reviews and bought one. It arrived today and I gave it a try. It exceeded my expectations. The positives mentioned by others is worth reiterating.
- No drivers required - true plug & play
- Blazing speed, didn't see any lag what so ever between clicking and seeing the page update. I kept the button pressed, and the slides were moving at blazing speed. Great wireless technology!
- weight, size, feel, texture all perfect
- Fewer buttons are easy to memorize and feel'able', hence you won't be looking for them or be confused during delivery.
- nice 'click' feel of the buttons for positive feedback
- laser is very powerful and bright - don't agree with another reader who mentioned 'weak' laser. Nice bright red dot and the strength I tried with almost 50 to 60ft away was still bright and strong.
- The timer is actually very convenient and useful. I am an MBA student as well as a Product Manager and both tasks require me to present very often and staying time-bound is a great benefit
- overall very well thought-out design. I didn't have to read the manual for anything. Even setting/resetting the timer was intuitive. Logitech - great job!
---Update: October 2010---
Thought I would update this review, just for the kick of it, even though it is not available anymore. The presenter still works just as good as the 1st day. I have been through many presentations, worldwide, and no issues at all. Thanks Logitech for a great quality product. Every bit of quality on every product goes a long way in building brand loyalty. Don't compromise on quality, at any cost. It pays for itself in due course.
Customer Review: Works with Mac (mostly), some minor things could be better Summary: 4 Stars
I've had this since fall 2006. My wife is the one that really wanted it, and the selling point for her was the countdown timer. You can set it in 5 minute increments. It'll give you one vibrate at 5 minutes to go, and another at 2 minutes to go. Wish I'd had something with that feature while I was a cadet (sorry, inside joke).
- As others have pointed out, the laser is a little bit, um *scattered* - the pattern comes out looking like a dot but you can see some extra beams surrounding the point itself. Doesn't really detract from the experience for the audience though.
- I have used it with the PCs in my grad school classrooms, but normally run it on an Apple Powerbook. I noticed when I tried it with my iMac that the system would not recognize any inputs. I think that's because I already have one Logitech wireless dongle plugged in for the cordless mouse. Either the logitech drivers are in conflict or the dongles are battling it out. On the Powerbook it works with no problems.
- Ditto other comments about the F5 key needing to be programmed before it'll drive the presentation, but normal forward, back, blank, and volume commands work fine.
- This is not a mouse. I've used a mouse presenter before and this was a bit limiting, but only because the presentations I had to give were poorly designed and needed a remote mouse. So if you have a tightly scripted presentation with no asynchonous branching pathways, this presenter will be great.
- I carry it around now as a matter of practice - the integrated dongle makes it easy, and I always have a laser pointer along too.
Very nice product.
