Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Wireless Presenter R400 with Red Laser PointerCustomer Review: Good for the occasional Presenter Summary: 4 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Back in 2006 I had purchased the Logitech 2.4 GHz Cordless Presenter (Black) and gave it a glowing 5-star review. 3 years later, I was given the opportunity to review this new Logitech R400 Wireless Presenter and thought wondered how they could one up their previous product.
A comparison of the aforementioned presenters, along with the R400's big brother, the Logitech Professional Presenter R800, there are many similarities in features.
The Basics:
- Units fit well in hand. Buttons are well positioned
- Forward/Back buttons to navigate through slides
- Battery indicator
- Uses AAA batteries (no need to search for hard to find batteries, especially if you are away on a conference). One set of batteries are included!
- Compact padded storage case
- Power on/off switch so that you can conserve power
- All 3 units operate on 2.4 GHz frequency
- USB Receiver slides and snaps into the Presenter for easy storage
- Black out screen - Can black out the screen (good for when you want to have people focus their attention on you instead of the slides)
- Laser Pointer (the older Presenter and R400 have a red laser, R800 has a green laser)
o Green laser pointers are supposedly easier to see on Plasma/LCD screens and in brightly-lit rooms
o Laser pointer works independent of the power on/off switch
Besides the difference in color of laser, there are a few distinct differences:
- Range - old presenter and R400 have a range of approximately 50 ft. R800 has a range of about 100 ft.
- Range indicator - The R800 shows the signal strength so you will know if you're still within range
- Timer/Alarm - The old presenter and R800 both have LCD timers and alarms to notify you how long your presentation is and when you should wrap up. The alarm will silently vibrate the presenter at 5 mins, 2 mins, and at 0 mins. The R400 does not have this feature.
- The older Presenter and R400 are thin and light. The R800 is a bit thicker to pack in the added features.
I tested the R400 with MS PowerPoint 2003 on my WinXP laptop, and it worked as well as can be expected. There are a couple reasons why I have chosen to give the Presenter 4 stars rather than a 5.
- All the buttons are slightly concave. The only way to tactilely distinguish the buttons is the tactile nub (which is really small) that is on the slide advance button.
- Does not have one of the smaller mini receivers found on many of Logitech's newer mice.
Bottom line is that the Logitech Wireless Presenter R400 is a great product for those of you that give occasional presentations in perhaps a small classroom environment, or for those of you that do not need all the advanced features. If the timing of presentations is a big factor in your job or your grade, I would recommend going for the Logitech Professional Presenter R800
