Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Logitech Portable Speaker S125i with Built-in iPod DockCustomer Review: I compared it to other small, lightweight, inexpensive, traveling speakers. It had the best sound of the bunch. Summary: 5 Stars
It's my favorite speaker for traveling. It plays my iPod Nano and my Mac laptop. There is an iPod dock on top of the speaker, but you need to purchase a separate cable to play the laptop and other devices.
I purchased a Belkin-Mini Stereo Cable 3 ft Part Number H2397VC/A. I paid $20 at the Apple Store. This cable is important. When I was testing speakers at Best Buy, they had a cable available for demos. I don't know what brand it was, but there was a big difference in sound between their demo cable and my Belkin cable. The Belkin is thicker. (BTW you plug this cable into the "headphones out jack" on the Mac laptop.)
I took my iPod and Belkin cable to a Best Buy store. I played the same song from my iPod on several of their speakers as well as other speakers in my home. The sound quality results are below, with (A) being the best. The S125i sound is not as good as (A) and (B), but you can't travel with (A) and (B), they are too big and heavy. There is a bass button on the S125i which is the main reason it sounded better than the other small speakers.
(A):
Rich, wonderful, deep sound you feel through your body: my desktop computer with an 8 x 8 x 7 inch subwoofer and two speakers. I bought it through Dell a few years ago. It was a good one, but it wasn't top of the line. Zylux Multimedia Computer Speaker System Powered Subwoofer Model A525.
(B):
Fuller and smoother sound than (C) but not as wonderful as (A). Klipsch Model iGroove SXT (13 x 4 x 5) 3 lbs. Too big and heavy to travel with. I paid $150 in 2007 at the Apple Store.
(C):
The best of the portable speakers, but the sound is a little more hollow, with a touch more echo than (B). It has a "bass button" which adds a really nice depth and is the reason it stood out from all the speakers in (D). Logitech Portable Speaker Model S125i (8 x 4 x 3) 12 ounces. List price is $60, but this week's price at Best Buy was $48. You can use batteries or the included electric cord.
(D):
This group includes all the other "portable speakers" and a wireless speaker. The sound quality had more of a white-noise-grainy sound than (C) - maybe a little tinny. The sound was ok, just not as good as (A),(B), and (C). The (D) group sound is definitely better than the transistor radio in my small travel alarm clock.
Logitech Portable Speaker Model S135i $48 at Best Buy. It looks identical to (C) but is a different color. It also has a bass button like (C). However, the sound quality is not as good as (C). This was odd because they look identical. It's possible that the S135i I tested was defective, but it wasn't worth asking the sales person open other boxes. The one I tested was fresh out of the box - had never been used before.
Logitech Wireless USB Speaker Z515. $90 at Amazon (10 x 4 x 2) 21 ounces. It's designed for laptops, but plays iPods using the cable mentioned above. It's bigger than the other portable speakers tested.
iHome Portable Stereo Speaker Case Model iH29BB $80 at Best Buy. Similar size to (C).
iHome2GO Model iH13NS. $50 at Bed Bath & Beyond in 2008. Similar size to (C). The part that plugs into the iPod feels slightly rougher than the Apple brand - like it's cheaply made. But it works ok with that plug and with the Belkin cable.
Insignia Portable Speaker for Apple iPod Model NS-IPSD2. $40 at Best Buy. Similar size to (C).
(E):
Sonic Impact Technologies I-P23 Model 5089. $99 from Magellan's (mail order) in 2008. Similar size to (C). I used this for two years, but it was frustrating to use. I had to press play and stop several times on both the iPod and the speaker to get it to work. I never felt like I had it figured out. When I tried to compare sound with the above speakers (this week), it wouldn't turn on at all. So I threw it away and was glad to be rid of it. I was unable to compare sound quality.
