Customer Review: Prevented PC from booting, but maybe the PC is the one to blame?

I installed this on my elderly father's HP Pavilion a1600n (AMD) PC. The installation went smoothly. However, I've learned to reboot the PC before leaving the scene, and it seemed like it didn't want to boot. It would hang right on the initial black screen with hardware & BIOS information (before Windows XP even loaded). If I unplugged the Linksys, the PC would continue merrily along. If I plugged it in when Windows was starting to load, it would stop the boot progress indicators until I unplugged it again (I wasn't willing to wait more than a few minutes to see if it would've continued on its own--just seeing it visibly and immediately stop & start the progress indicators was enough for me). I fiddled with various BIOS settings (I've been a PC tech for over 25 years) but couldn't get any improvement. If I plugged it in after Windows was fully loaded, it worked fine, but this was not acceptable for a PC used by 80+ year-old non-technical people! The vendor (Deal Barn) was cooperative though and cheerfully refunded my money when I returned the unit. I then bought a similar, even higher-rated, Medialink wireless USB adapter, which *also* causes a boot problem, but this time only a 1-2 minute delay, which I was willing to accept (of course after all this work they then decided it was time for a new computer anyway, so I've ordered them an iMac...).
I would've given the device 1 star but since the computer had a similar (but less serious) problem with a similar product, maybe the PC is more to blame than the adapter(s). I also connected the adapter to a couple other PCs and it didn't have the same hardware conflict (although I didn't fully install the software, since I didn't want to mess up the other PCs).
