Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Linksys by Cisco WRT610N Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router

Customer Review: Stable router
Summary: 4 Stars

Fast, reliable N router - I have setup both G @ 2.5 and N @ 5 GHz.
As long as all your N clients are @ 5GHz, you get a reliable fast performance. Using it for about 8 months and happy wit the stability
Connecting to N @5G:
o USB n/w adapter WUSB600N to my desktop @ ~200Mbps
o WET610N to my PS3: Streams MP4 1080P without any flicker
o Apple Airport Express as Wireless Music Player
o MacBook Pro
Connecting to G @ 2.5:
o all older LT
o WRT54G as Bridge to a Digital Music player

For the price, this could have more range with better powerful signal.

Connecting USB drive for Media streaming is not stable and needs improvement and stability

Customer Review: A Great Buy
Summary: 5 Stars

This is probably one of the best routers that I have used. I had no trouble getting it installed. One of the things that I bought it for was the NAS connection on the back. This allows you to plug in a USB drive and access it from amywhere in the network. It works great. I gave the ease of setup rating only 3 stars because I had a terrible time getting this to work. I don't find anywhere in the documantation that tells you that it has to be formatted FAT32. I initially formatted it as NTFS and got no setup errors - it just didn't work. I eventually found a forum post somewhere that said it has to be FAT32. I recommend that you let the router itself format the drive (there is an option in the configuration panel). Once that is done it works like a charm. I keep all my music on a small USB drive connected to the router. That way I can play the music anywhere in the house (with a Sonos system) even with the computer off. Way cool.

Customer Review: Good only for short ranges thru walls; added Powerline Kit
Summary: 2 Stars

Updated Review
Update: 12/24/2009: Received and installed LinkSys Powerline AV Network Kit (PLK300) which carries information on a carrier frequency riding on the 120VAC house wiring within the home (home side of circuitry after main breaker to electric company supply). Setup was straightforward and took less than an hour. Kit has two units: #1 is connected by Ethernet cable to router (WRT610N) and to a 120VAC outlet; #2 is connected to the HDTV and BluRay player via two Ethernet cables as well as a nearby 120VAC outlet. The second unit has slots for four (total) separate Ethernet connections of which we only used two.
Result: 100% SUCCESS! Can stream BluRay movies, music, net news, gadgets, etc.
Notes on further discussions with technical support: The `distance" figures quoted for the router and bridge are "open air" distances and will be degraded by passage through walls (interior or exterior). Further degradation may result if the signal must pass through "metal" window screens and/or through stucco walls (stucco is normally applied over a metal grid). Since our home is laid out where the signal will pass through two stucco walls in going from the "den" wing to the LR entertainment center, this may have been the cause of the very poor reception reported earlier.
As a result, I am raising the rating to four stars (would rate higher if the above information had been available on the LinkSys web site.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LinkSys WRT610N Router and WET610N Bridge: We recently purchased a Sony Bravia TV and BluRay Player (52Z5100 and N460) which have the ability to accept video streaming and "gadgets". After reading various wireless reviews AND the Sony recommendation for the WET610 Bridge, we purchased these two units. They were to be used to connect between the cable modem (den) and LR entertainment center, a distance of ~60' through several interior sheetrock walls in a single story residence (with construction which does not practically allow Ethernet cable connection).

The end result is disappointing! 5GHz transmissions from the router to the bridge are registered at a 97% signal level at ~ 3 ft. from the router; ~50% at ~25' from the router and not measurable at the TV location. At 2.4GHZ the signal level at the TV registered ~ 15-20% and gave a satisfactory path to set up "gadgets" and to upgrade the TV and BluRay firmware. However, streaming of videos, music, etc. failed due to insufficient bandwidth.

I tried several different setups on the router and bridge to no avail. I then contacted LinkSys support and paid for their diagnosis and support (which involved resetting both router and bridge). There was no significant improvement.
Current status: I am awaiting delivery of newly-ordered LinkSys PLK300 PowerLine AV Ethernet Adapter Kit (uses internal home 120VAC wiring for "carrier transmission" of the signal; hardwire connection to router). Hope this works.

Pros: For someone relatively familiar with computers, the LinkSys CD's provided a relatively quick and easy setup and connection using my Windows 7 (home premium, 32 bit) software. Although "Advanced Settings" are available, there is no LinkSys instruction as to their probable effect and I did not use them (but LinkSys support did). Also, the router and bridge are relatively attractive / not techie or geeky looking.

Cons: At this point, the intended use of these two devices over this distance and in this environment is a failure.

Customer Review: Gotta give me better than $134.95 for me to buy!
Summary: 3 Stars

That's the last lowest price that Amazon had before the recent sale of $139.99. I ALMOST bought at this price, but it was still too high. Now it's back to $154.95.

Wow. STILL way too high. When others are offering prices below $100 for the same Simultaneous Dual-N Band, the name "Linksys" just isn't enough for me to move to purchase. Perhaps I'll look into purchasing the Netgear WNDR3700 RangeMax which is currently selling in the $100 range.

Customer Review: WTR 610N is one of the best router on the market
Summary: 5 Stars

I was on the market for a new router, because my Netgear wireless G router was having problem (loss connection), plus i was in the market for a wireless N router that has good range, gigabit, good speed, dualband, and usb storage. I was look at D-Link, Netgear 3700 but the price wasn't good, over $[...] without tax and shipping, then i saw Linksys WRT610n for $[...] for a refub one, that's a steal because normally it cost [...]. with 90 days warranty (a new one has 1yr warranty). the setup was pretty much pop in the cd and go, and follow the on screen instructions (it was my first time) very user friendly.

Range- it works over 100feet (in front of my house) with great connection, then i went across a street in front of my neighbor house (about 150feet , and it still works, with good connection, i said wtf, omg! this router has the best range. because my old netgear only works up to 50feet.

Gigabit- to test it out i did a speed test on speakeasy.net

Speed test:i went on speakeasy.net for the speedtest, download avg speed 15800kbps and upload avg speed 960kbps. when i unplugged the gigabit i went wireless the speed test: download avg speed 14500kbps and upload avg speed 920kbps. which was a little faster but not by much.

Dualband- Simultaneously runs on G and N, wireless G is on the 2.4gz and wireless N is on the 5gz, so it is superfast with no lagging on the N. even though my main laptop is a HP DV4 with no wireless N. the speed was pretty quick in term of Youtube streaming.

USB: storage is pretty much plug in the back of the router, and go through the instruction on the internet(google search it) but it was a little confusing because this was my first time installing a router.

Warranty: the only downside for this router is the 90 day warranty because it's a refub one. a brand new WRT610N has 1yr warranty.

All in all, this router is the best one in the market, according to its value, range, usb storage, performance, and user friendly. This is the best router, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Test it yourself and you will know what i'm talking about. Hope my review helps. thank you for reading. =)
