Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WUSB600N Dual-Band Wireless-N USB Network AdapterCustomer Review: I wish ... Summary: 4 Stars
Some people seem to like this adapter ... and some hate it. I have purchased several of these (the v2 firmware) for use on Windows XP and Windows Vista machines, and they have functioned well. The software install process is longer than I would think is necessary, and it took some coaxing on Windows XP Home on machines with less than 1GB of RAM, but it does function there. (Because of comments below) Dual-Band does work in all the XP and Vista scenerios where I have used this device.
As of today's date, however, I cannot recommend it for Windows 7. Cisco had a driver on their website but it was withdrawn. I got a beta of a replacement for it and managed to coax it into the machine, but only the 2.4gHz "g" band works (and this is a dual band NIC). Now, several weeks after my most recent contact with Cisco, there is still no ETA on a new one. As most people buying this adapter want the expanded range, I would hold off until you can be sure drivers exist.
UPDATE: Cisco has finally posted Windows7 drivers. I have only tried these on Win7 Professional, but have it on several machines. Dual Band is working and the connections are very stable.
Now recommended for Win 7.
Customer Review: Good performance; ideal for desktops Summary: 5 Stars
The 600N goes into a USB port. If you're planning to use on a laptop, note that it's thicker than a normal USB connector and may it block adjacent ports. It comes with a normal USB cable connected to a small stand so the thickness is not a problem for a desktop -- just plug the cable in, put the adapter into the stand, put it on a convenient surface.
And the USB adapter pulls in the signal from a municipal wi-fi point attached to a phone pole across a very wide main street from my wife's office. The signal is solid enough so that she could cancel the Verizon DSL service she's been using and save about thirty dollars a month. The installation software worked as adverstised, in contrast to some other Linksys installation software I've used. The adapter's performance is a nice contrast to the crummy results from a Linksys WRG 310N router, which turned out to have less range than my G + MIO router -- and useless installation software.
The ability to link to the municipal wi-fi signal shows that the N protocol for wi-fi is reasonably mature, so the WUSB600N USB adapter is worth considering even if you're connecting to something other than a Linksys wireless router.
Customer Review: Did the job! Summary: 5 Stars
The wireless component in my laptop broke for the 2nd time, so went and got this. I have Windows Vista btw. Anyway, it is easy to install: FIRST place CD in follow the instructions, then when prompted insert Wireless Adapter, let it install it's software, click on "your" router (Be careful because you may click on someone else's; yes with the range I was able to pick up 2 other routers in my neighborhood...hint-hint set up a password if you haven't already done so on your Belkin or whatever router you are currently using) and then you should be set, unless of course you have a password on your network. After you put in your password you should be ready to go. The only time it does stop working is when your computer is in sleep mode or when the computer is off. When the computer is back on, it works just as well if not better than the wireless component in my laptop. Oh, one last thing, you can either plug the adapter directly into your usb port or place it in the dock it comes with it then hook the other end of the usb cable into the usb port. The only thing I miss from my component working in my laptop is the fact you don't have something hooked up to your usb port. Enjoy!
Customer Review: Not compatible with Windows Vista (disconnects on startup) Summary: 2 Stars
As an IT guy, I have gotten slack from my peers for staying loyal to Linksys all these years (there's a reason they are referred to as "LinkSucks"). The WUSB600N isn't compatible with Windows Vista (but what is really?) It did perform better on Windows XP, and has so far been inconsistent on Windows 7. I hope they will at least try to work the problems out with Windows 7.
As you may have read in other reviews, you should never install the Linksys drivers if possible. But, it doesn't matter how you install the WUSB600N on a Vista OS, there will always be connectivity issues. I've worked very hard to get to the point I'm at now: which is that the adapter disconnects within the first 5 minutes every time on startup. Half the time it will function normally throughout the day, the other half the time it will drop for no reason despite having excellent signal coverage.
I know Vista was a complete failure and wireless N technology is still in its infancy, but this is a sub-standard product from a usually reputable company. After years of routers failing prematurely this was the last straw. I have since purchased over a dozen new Dlink routers for work.
Customer Review: works fast with Linksys wireless N Gigabyte router Summary: 4 Stars
I have XP Pro svpk 2. the adaptor is located in the next room from the router... The router has the WEP2 wireless security function and the adaptor allows for easy auto setup. The adaptor was plugged directly into the back USB 2.0 port instead of the extended wire connector. It installed easily..and for the past hour it has vacillated from 54 Mbps up to 108Mbps... happy-happy. Its connection data shows it is connected at 2.4Ghz.. I have not found how to change it to 5Ghz nor does the wee bit of documentation tell you. I tried the 54 Mbps PCI card and it dropped the wireless connection every few min. The Netgear WPN111 USB adaptor tried its best to connect and has a lovely dash board with easy to understand connection data, but it too seemed to lose its connection to the router, and as with other reviews on the Netgear product it was always very hot. I tried this USB because it matched the Linksys router data. I will try it out for the next few days and report back. I also have found the Linksys technical support to be horrid. My experience with external adaptors for wireless desktops has been dismal and hope I have found the solution by getting the WUSB600N.
