Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WUSB600N Dual-Band Wireless-N USB Network AdapterCustomer Review: Marginal performance - marketing triumph ... engineering flop Summary: 2 Stars
After stellar performance of the parent dual-band WRT600T router with my plain jane laptop some 50 feet removed - and the exciting image of the happy family computing all over a multi-story house on the box - I purchased this multi-band wireless receiver to join the cheerful crowd. Not so! Had hoped to 'unwire' my cabled net of 3 desktops for neater appearance; surely not with this underperforming weakling.
Using a big Dell (XP/SP3), the vaunted automatic link with the router failed - even after placing the antenna within 3 feet of the router. Laborious manual installation, though eventually succesful, was a pain; not helped a bit by differing terminology for arcane topics between master unit and slave receiver. The final signal at a desktop less than 30 feet away, separated by a thin plaster wall (no hindrance to laptop reception) was just 2-to-3 wavering bars ("weak"), and switching to the 5 GHz band required tedious reentry of the 16-digit security code.
A dual antenna USB plugin receiver sounds like an ideal solution for interconnecting desktops in a Wi-Fi environment -- but this premature release needs a lot more work before being ready for prime time. And online help is an annoying 'Catch-22', without direct email link to tech support. Shame on Linksys for not matching its outstanding router to this prematurely released underachiever. Better off to get a generic unit at half the price.
Oh, and not so by the way, this unit installs only only a PC. On my MacPro it went totally unrecognized - further negating any chance of one happy computing family. Two stars for 2-out-of-5 reception bars underperformance.
Customer Review: Linksys just lost a customer Summary: 1 Stars
Well, it all started ok, but ended very badly for my WUSB600N. First thing I did was install the drivers and Linksys Connection Manager. Then I used the WPS wifi protected setup built into my router WNR834B v.2 and the Linksys software which almost worked as it found the router and connected, but could never obtain an ip address from the router. So then I used windows zero config and was able to get a connection and it worked until I switched beck to the Linksys software. I now call a connection manager the connection mangler because every time I tried to connect to my NETGEAR RangeMax NEXT Wireless-N router with the Linksys software it locks all further communication with the 600N and I have to reboot and use windows wireless network zero-config utility. This device has also caused my Dell Precision M90 with XP SP2 to blue screen three times.
My Dell came with a Dell wireless g card built in and I am back to using that to write this review. I hope Linksys realizes that they are starting to get a reputation of making some bad products. If Cisco is involved with this company then they need to bring more product verification back to Linksys to improve customer satisfaction.
BTW: this device seem like it will break easily, however mine did not break but it does flex at the USB connection way to easily so if you are brave and want to by this device then be aware to use the supplied base and do not plug directly into a Mobile device such as a laptop. My 600N also came with a wonderful rattle of loose solder inside the device so again beware Linksys WUSB600N.
Customer Review: Disappointing performance Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this client adapter along with the WRT600N dual-band router and the WGA600N dual-band gaming adapter (everything was Linksys dual-band). After setting up the router and gaming adapter with no problems, I attempted to connect a computer to the network using the WUSB600N.
This adapter comes with a USB extension cable with a base at the end, so you can position the adapter in a favorable location. With the best reception, Windows reports the 802.11N connection as 270 Mbps. After connecting to my router, which was almost exactly one floor above, the connection quickly slowed and settled between 12 Mbps and 27 Mbps. This means that the 802.11n performance of this adapter was worse than the performance of the previous 802.11g adapter I was running on the same computer. In addition, I found that I could not transfer any large files across the network (802.11n to LAN, 802.11n to 802.11n, and 802.11n to 802.11g on the other band). The transfer would simply hang, and the connection would stop working. I could only restore the connection by unplugging the adapter and plugging it back in. I eventually found that I could get large files to transfer by plugging the adapter directly into my USB port, but the reception was very poor there.
All in all, I would say that this thing is not worth the money I paid for it. It would probably suffice as a last resort for connecting to an 802.11n network, but it seems to be pretty finicky about the USB power, and I never got a satisfactory connection with it, even though I am using all Linksys hardware.
Customer Review: Works great now but only because of helpful Amazon customer reviews! Summary: 4 Stars
Good gracious! Where would I be without Amazon's incredible network of knowledgeable customers??! I am brand new to PC networking but did my research and purchased this Linksys WUSB600N Adaptor to use with my brand new Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless Router. The PC I was hoping to make 'wireless' is a 2003 Dell Dimension 2400 with XP. During several attempts at installation, this adapter kept getting hung up on the last piece of setup (named "Wireless Setup"). I could not access Linksys online support without first registering my product and this caused some difficulty because product #'s were requested of me that I could not locate on my device. So I telephoned Linksys Tech Support. I was on the phone for OVER ONE HOUR(!) and the gentleman I spoke with seemed unfamiliar with XP as he attempted to guide me thru certain steps. Eventually he asked me to hang up the phone, move the old PC into the room with the cable internet modem and connect it, then call him back so he could proxy in for troubleshooting. I agreed, but instead I turned to Amazon customer reviews for this item. Whew! I read the comment that suggested I use the Windows Hardware Install utility (rather than the one that came with the Adapter) and within 3 minutes I was surfing the web. Insane!
I would have awarded this product 5 stars if online Tech Support was more user-friendly or if my telephone conversation with Linksys Support had been more productive. Once again, Amazon customer reviews proved more helpful than the manufacturer of the item!
Customer Review: Completely disappointed Summary: 1 Stars
When I originally installed this, I put it on a hacked version of windows 7 32bit (shhhhhh) and it installed just fine, but my mother was constantly calling me while I was at work stating that she can't get on the internet. I blamed her as the cause as she was probably doing something wrong or touching things she shouldn't. Months later I purchased a legit copy of windows 7 (64 bit)and installed it (see happy ending) expecting that maybe now it will work. Thing were looking promising but BEHOLD! the same issues. I downloaded the latest drivers and nothing. After a few min it disconnects again.
*mind you I work as desktop/IT support for a banking firm. This isn't a major thing for me, or anyone for that matter, to figure out*
All in all this is a complete upset. Here I am yelling at my own mother when it was the adapter that was the issue.
I did not have ANY issues with the cheap-o belkin USB adapter I purchased a while back. And if it weren't for my compulsion to buy nice things and the fact I accidentally snapped the Belkin adapter by dropping it and stepping on it, I would have gone back to the Belkin adapter. This was a waist of money. Also mind you that I am also not running shady equipment either. I was shocked to see this kind of performance from a product with CISCOs name slapped on it.
