Customer Review: Close Range and Wide Open Space

I am a Windows 7 64-bit user and there are only a few choices to choose from if you want to go wireless because of compatibility issues. This wireless usb device is one of the compatible ones but definitely not the best choice because of its limited range (which I am aware of). But how limited is limited? I live in a very small apartment, my living room is probably around 250 sq.ft and my wireless router is stationed within it. My PC is located about 13 feet from the router and they can clearly see each other. When I first used this device, I plugged it into one of the usb ports at the back of the pc. Excited, I powered the pc on to check my connectivity, the connection was flawless except for one thing, my internet became so damn slow. I have an 8Mbps service and it's only registering 512Kbps. So I said to myself it couldn't be the wireless usb's fault because it is practically next to the router. What I did next was move the wireless usb to the front usb port. Lo and behold, my internet connection went back to normal.
So there you go, this device has short range issues and demands wide-open space. No biggie if you live in a small apartment like me.

I purchased this after my newly upgraded Vista PC decided that it did not like my old USB adapter. My choice was based upon information that Linksys had a Vista driver. True but not as simple as it should be.
I downloaded the new driver uing a link on the Linksys web site and attempted to install multiple times. No luck. Tried 1-800-INDIA but unable to get through. Got up way early the next day and did reach tech support. They basically had me repeat everything I had been trying but without success. They also said that they would evaluate and call me back.
On to the punch line. Linksys had a bad link on their web site whereby clicking on the link to get the updated Vista driver for this product downloaded the DRIVER FOR A DIFFERENT PRODUCT. Once they determined this and told me where to download the correct driver, all went smoothly. The joys of being an early adapter. By the way, I did check and confirmed that they now link to the proper file!
I give this 3 stars because it actually does work well now but was hell to set up.

I have had this for 2 weeks now and have had to call Linksys 5 times. I have been hung up on three times. Yesterday was the final straw. Linksys told me I had a registry issue because my PC would not let them use the windows driver to re-install the adapter driver. This was the fourth time it was installed. Linksys told me I had to take my PC to a repair shop to clear the registry before they could load the new driver. I paid $9.99 week before last for them to install the wireless router (WRT54GL,and WUSB54GC wireless adater)which worked for 3 days. When I had to reboot my PC for a MS update, it would not regconize the wireless adapter. Same thing happened yesterday, this time it's my fault again because the drivers they first installed could not be deleted. WT.... The adapter works fine as long as I don't reboot. Linksys customer service is a JOKE. I will be taking my PC in next week for a hard drive optimize and clear the registry so I can use the windows driver full time. Don't use the Linksys software, let your PC windows XP in my case load the drivers its self.Customer Review: Terrible product

This adapter has a number of problems.
On the first computer I tried it on, it couldn't detect my network, even though my laptop, sitting right next to it, could see it with 4 bars. The software gets stuck looking for a network and you have to kill the program to make it stop. Then I got the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).
On the second computer I tried, I got the same problem trying to find networks. I killed the program & restarted the computer, trying to make a "manual" connection to my network, still with no luck. As mentioned before, the installation also messed with my logon settings, changing my desktop and preferences. This is simply not acceptable.
After I uninstalled the program, my login settings were still changed. I could have lived with that, but when I tried to do a System Restore, it wouldn't run! The software messed that up too! I had to reformat the drive and re-install WIndows to fix it.
Both of the computers I tried this on had FRESH installs of WIndows XP Pro. STAY AWAY FROM THIS ADAPTER!!
Customer Review: Insallation and Download Disaster

Awful product, awful service. When I tried the install on my PC it froze my computer at the 50% done level. I rebooted and tried to install again....said I had to uninstall, but it couldn't find file and kept hanging up...Called 1-800 India and told I had to download up dated software and install that...(of course without cxn I had to go to other computer in house, write CD which I did) and tried to install update drivers BUT same thing happneed....After three hours tech tells me the cannot fix will try to find registry cleaner...then hangs up on me....I call back and then get 1800 Phillipines who says there is no registry cleaner for this product....four hours now...tech wants me to install it on another computer (where not needed to see if software works)...I say no thanks...after four 1/2 hours I'll return it and never buy Linksys again...may also sell my Cisco stock as the level of customer service I got (poor) is probably indicative of larger problems at that company...do not know what I'm going to do to get rid of the unneeded program segments...
