Customer Review: Don't Get Too Excited if It Works the First Time!
Summary: 1 Stars

This is an absolutely frustrating piece of crap. Sure, it was easy to install, and it worked perfectly right out of the box...for about a WEEK. At first I thought it was our network (Comcast is not always very reliable!), but my husband's laptop, our Wii, our Roku player - everything was working effortlessly with the network. It was just the desktop with which we were using the adapter that couldn't get onto the internet. I restarted the computer, reconfigured the adapter, then yay! it detected the network, showed "excellent" signal strenth...BUT IT WON'T LOAD ANY PAGES!!! Why on earth would it tell me I'm good to go, and then not load anything at all? The troubleshooting on the CD-ROM's user guide is a joke - just tells you to remove the adapter then put it back again. Even when I went to the trouble to get the wireless router literally within SIGHT of my desktop, the adapter wasn't working (I was afraid the router was originally too far away, but that doesn't seem to be the problem). This thing is just a total piece of crap. So, so frustrated with it!

**edited to add: So now it's a week later, and the LED light doesn't even light up. When I try to reinstall the adapter, it says it's not installed correctly. I've checked the adapter on 4 different USB ports, nothing. I've check other peripherals on each of the USB ports, they all work fine. This piece of junk has literally just STOPPED WORKING altogether. Nothing, nada, a little black plastic piece of garbage. I will be contacting the seller to return immediately.

Customer Review: Linksys WUSB5GC Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter

I received the Adapter promptly and started to install it. First sheet in the box said "if you have Vista operation system do not use this CD, but go to the internet to get correct driver". This could be a little problem, since the adapter is for getting to the internet. I had another computer to use to get the driver from the internet. Transferred the new driver to this computer and installed the adapter --- nothing happened. It came back "can not find driver". Tried several times and still nothing. Send at least a half day calling Linksys Tech. Assistance and going thru their phone maze and getting cut off several times, just to be told to do what I had been doing all a long. Finally someone decided it might be the unit and to send to them and they would replace it. Which I did and in about a week had a new unit. I loaded the driver I had gotten off the net and installed the adapter -- nothing !! The CD they provided with the new adapter looked just like the one I have sent in with the bad adapter, I decided to load it and installed the adapter again. It worked --- part of the time. I am about 25 feet from the router, but unless the adapter is on the extension USB chord provided and above my desk, it only works part time. It works great when I log-on, but if I leave the computer run and it go into "sleep" it will not work until log-off and log back on. Then works fine.

Customer Review: Installing driver crashed my machine, 2nd time worked...
Summary: 3 Stars

Moved my Dell desktop too far from the router for a wired connection, so I had to buy a USB wireless card. This fit the bill on paper, and as soon as I plugged it in, it seemingly was acquiring a signal from my wireless router (Netgear G router). I installed the drivers from the bundled CD and upon reboot, my computer would not boot up. Windows was missing some system32 file that it could not find. Let me just say that in the 3 years I've owned this desktop, this is the first problem I've ever had with it. Consequently, I had to reinstall Windows. Upon the 2nd time around, installing the drivers worked flawlessly. I'm guessing the hard disk was not totally in sound condition and installing the drivers manifested this issue, but this is purely a guess.

After using it for a few days, I noticed its reported connection speed was not at its maximum potential of 54Mbps. It was consistently reporting 1Mbps (and acting like it, too). Also, the connection would consistently drop and would require the adapter to be removed and inserted again. I moved the adapter from the back of the computer to the top of my monitor (via the bundled USB extension cable) and haven't had a problem since. Not sure if it was the change in location to grab a better connection or the extension cable's usb connection that had a better grab of the on-board usb port.

Customer Review: Plug-and-play from far away

Four reasons why this is a great buy:

1. Wireless-G is still faster than you need, and a great value compared to comparable Wireless-N devices. The 54 Mbps speed of Wireless-G is more than double the speed of anyone's home Internet be it cable, phone, satellite, or fiber. Increasing your wireless speed beyond 54 Mbps will have zero effect on your Internet response.

2. Linksys is the industry standard brand for home networking. It's fully supported by every PC brand, every operating system, every version. There is zero chance of incompatiblity.

3. You just plug it in, and it works. There is no need to use the installation disk or otherwise search for drivers to install. Windows already has drivers for this standard device, and can update them automatically if a newer version is ever required.

4. This device works from a distance with no issues. For my latest purchase (I have installed others in the past), this Wireless-G adapter is plugged into a rear USB port in my daughter's bedroom upstairs - up against the rear wall of our house. The WAP router to which it connects is located at the front corner of our house on the first floor. Even with doors closed, there is plenty of signal strength for full speed connectivity.

Customer Review: WORKS FLAWLESSLY
Summary: 5 Stars

I have an old Dell that I relegated to the corner of the basement for my young girls to play games on. They like to go on the Disney Channel online, so I wanted to give them internet access. The computer is so old (7 years old-which is ancient by computer standards) that I wasn't sure this adapter would work. The short answer-it works flawlessly. It took me 5 minutes to get it up and running. Perfect internet connection to my home network.

It is so good in fact that I have to buy another one. I have 3 computers on my network, and I recently moved them around to different locations. My almost new HP computer, which has a built in wireless card, moved from right next to the router, to another room. After I moved it, I kept getting a very weak signal. Not sure why, but I just popped the adapter out of the old Dell and popped it into the new HP. Literally took me 2 minutes to get it going, and I now I have excellent signal strength. I now have to buy a replacement to put back in the old computer so my girls can access the internet.

I did not have any of the problems some of the other posters had, and this adapter has now worked perfectly on 2 different computers, an old one and a new one.
