Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT610N Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router

Customer Review: This is the router to own in Early to Mid 2010
Summary: 5 Stars

After returning the Linksys by Cisco WRT320N Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router, I opted to get this router because it offers dual simultaneous N bands and more bandwidth.

I have to say that I'm impressed. After I put in a wireless N card on my laptop I connected at 300Mbps....WHOA! That's almost 6x more than my old Linksys Wireless G. I put this router in exactly the same place as my Wireless G used to be and I get better signal strenght with this router. With my Wireless G, I sometimes would get just marginal signal strenght but with this router I always get full bars wherever I am.

I do notice that if I get too far from the router, my bandwidth drops to about 200Mbps but still get full strenght.

I read that there were some issues with these routers when they first came out; that they'd overheat, drop connections, or suffered from poor signal strenght.

I got a new new router from Amazon - firmware 2.0 and it runs like a champ.

My recommendation is that if you haven't gone to to Wireless N yet, DO IT! I'm in hog heaven.

PROS OF THIS ROUTER:
-Wireless N ----- fast fast 300Mbps for me, 144Mbps if I'm far far from the router
-WPA2 Personal and Enterprise so its more secure.
-Long Range (much longer than my G)
-Storage device, I plugged in a hard drive and I can see it on the network
-GIGABIT router -- this is huge if you have a wired network throughout your house like I do.
-More home friendly design.
-It has all the usual stuff (MAC filters, access controls, security, and a myriad of settings but it is the standard Cisco Linksys web interface. Nothing to write home about from a usability standpoint but it works and I appreciate that)

CONS:
-Built in antenna can't be positioned (that said, it hasn't been a problem for me)
-I'm used to linksys routers and switches stacking neatly and this is a departure from that approach. This is decidedly more homefriendly but not as practical for those of us who have multiple devices.

Overall, 5 stars!! I'm very happy with this router.

Customer Review: WTR 610N is one of the best router on the market
Summary: 5 Stars

I was on the market for a new router, because my Netgear wireless G router was having problem (loss connection), plus i was in the market for a wireless N router that has good range, gigabit, good speed, dualband, and usb storage. I was look at D-Link, Netgear 3700 but the price wasn't good, over $[...] without tax and shipping, then i saw Linksys WRT610n for $[...] for a refub one, that's a steal because normally it cost [...]. with 90 days warranty (a new one has 1yr warranty). the setup was pretty much pop in the cd and go, and follow the on screen instructions (it was my first time) very user friendly.

Range- it works over 100feet (in front of my house) with great connection, then i went across a street in front of my neighbor house (about 150feet , and it still works, with good connection, i said wtf, omg! this router has the best range. because my old netgear only works up to 50feet.

Gigabit- to test it out i did a speed test on speakeasy.net

Speed test:i went on speakeasy.net for the speedtest, download avg speed 15800kbps and upload avg speed 960kbps. when i unplugged the gigabit i went wireless the speed test: download avg speed 14500kbps and upload avg speed 920kbps. which was a little faster but not by much.

Dualband- Simultaneously runs on G and N, wireless G is on the 2.4gz and wireless N is on the 5gz, so it is superfast with no lagging on the N. even though my main laptop is a HP DV4 with no wireless N. the speed was pretty quick in term of Youtube streaming.

USB: storage is pretty much plug in the back of the router, and go through the instruction on the internet(google search it) but it was a little confusing because this was my first time installing a router.

Warranty: the only downside for this router is the 90 day warranty because it's a refub one. a brand new WRT610N has 1yr warranty.

All in all, this router is the best one in the market, according to its value, range, usb storage, performance, and user friendly. This is the best router, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Test it yourself and you will know what i'm talking about. Hope my review helps. thank you for reading. =)

Customer Review: Nice Router - Installed smoothly
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this router to replace my old linksys and I have been pretty pleased with it so far. Somewhat foolishly I started installing this whilst I was in a hurry but all was well as it simply plugged in as a replacement and the software installed without issue. The LELA (or whatever its called) software updated the firmware to the latest version automatically and the software worked without fault. The router initially failed to connect to the internet but this was my ISP locking the connection to the mac address of my previous router. This was easily solved by using the MAC spoofing feature of the WRT610N - the router connected first time after that.

I liked the fact that it persuaded you to change the default passwords (there are so many people that don't change them on there routers). This thing seemed fairly security conscious.

The media connection feature allowed me to plug in a 750 WD USB external HDD (which it didn't see at first - this required a reboot) and I can configure it to share either the whole drive or certain folders - this worked perfectly in both XP and vista - I haven't tried this extensively so I don't know how it works long term. There is also a UPnP server and an FTP server built in (require the USB drive connected). These were really easy to set up.
Overall I have been pretty impressed by this product - setup was so easy that not only did I get it set up in a rush but I also had time to play with a few of the more advanced features.

This thing is not for the casual user - you need to know what you are buying and that you are going to use its features - if you are not there are other routers that will do a great job - this one happened to tick all the right boxes for me and I have not been disappointed so far - I was going to buy the WRT600N a few weeks ago but I am glad that fate stepped in and delayed me placing the order as the 610N is so much better looking than the 600N which is v. boxy and covered in antennas.

Overall a nice product so far and initial impression have been favorable. Only time will tell how good this holds up to some heavier testing. HD TV streaming here I come! :-)

Customer Review: Stop - Don't Waste Your Money
Summary: 2 Stars

Okay, okay - I should have paid attention to the other reviews about this product. I am an IT pro and thought I wouldn't have the same issues. Okay - I was wrong. The router did setup nicely - no problems. I had a little signal loss now and then - but nothing special. But this morning - the 2.4 ghz band just died. That's right - died - I couldn't get it back. Did I mention I am an IT pro? Every device hooked up through the 2.4ghz band couldn't connect anymore. (2.4ghz is the main band.) Spent hours rebooting / reconfiguring etc. The 5 ghz band stayed up - no worries.

Other things to note about this:

Many people complain about heat - I had it on a glass desk - no heat problems. You might want to try a surface like this.

The USB for data drive is okay - requires passwords to be entered every time your computer books - kind of a pain.

5ghz is not powerful. If you have a long distance, you won't be able to use 5ghz - by the way, this seems to be true with all 5ghz routers, not just this one.

I owned the smaller gigabit version of this and returned it - didn't have as many issues, but only had that one for a week - wanted the storage usb this one has.

By the way, customer support is 100% worthless. When I told the "tech" that the 2.4ghz band dropped but I still was getting the 5ghz band - he asked what I was talking about. Told me there wasn't such a thing as a 5ghz band! Thought I was talking about a computer or something! Spent 30 min on hold, then 60 min with him. In 60 min time we did absolutely nothing (except bring up the router menu!)

I have always owned a Linksys - but had to return this. I just went out and bought a D-Link DIR-825. Has all the same bells and whistles, but so far it works! The 2.4ghz seems stronger - full bars 2 rooms away - the 5ghz about the same and ths Linksys. I haven't had any problems yet with this - but I guess time will tell. (The reviews here in Amazon are much better for the D-Link by the way.

If you are a die-hard Linksys guy like me, just be prepared to be disappointed. Sorry Linksys, but you messed up this one.

Customer Review: Easy to use, but distance is lacking! Firmware update helps.
Summary: 3 Stars

This router is advertised to be simple to set-up and use, with better speed and range than previous B or G routers.

So...

Ease of use - 5/5

This is without doubt the easiest to set-up router I have had the pleasure of owning. Simply put in the CD, follow instructions and voila you are connected. Additionally Linksys include the LELA software (Linksys EasyLink Advisor)which enables you to manage your home network quite easily. On the downside, if you need to change channels, you have to connect to the router directly through its IP connection... and the options in there require a Network admin to fully decipher.

Speed/BandWidth 5/5

Connected my daughter's PC with a dual G/N Band USB wireless adapter. She was running over 250Mb/s, and her response is now as good as my 1GB connection to the router. BTW - this is a Gigabit router, so if you connect using Cat6 wiring and have a Gigabit Nic, you will see the router indicator turn green instead of blue.

Distance/Range 3.5/5

My youngest son's computer is upstairs and 110 feet from my router. He get about a 20% signal, using the same adapter as my daughter who is 50 feet away. There are no aerials nor can you buy add-ons, so that sucks. HOWEVER, I performed the firmware update (see the Linksys download pages) and he now gets 75Mbs and a signal strength of about 35%, which is much improved.

A note on the firmware upgrade. I could not get my sons' Nintendo DS/DSi to connect to my network. The Firmware resolved this, so now my sons can play via the internet which has made them happy.

Value For Money 3/5
Overall, I have to agree with most of the dissenting reviewers. This should have been the Gold Standard for linksys, but it is not. For the money, and the hype, you/we should expect much better range.

Overall - 3/5

If you have a small house and need the bandwidth - this will work just fine. If you are buying as I did, to improve speed and bandwidth, and have a long distance between the router and the adapters - keep looking.
