Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WRT600N Linksys Ultra RangePlus Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link

Customer Review: Excellent Hardware Addition
Summary: 5 Stars

The Good: The combination of 4 wired port with the wireless capability was a major selling point. It filled the need in my office very well. Having the dual band wireless capability is a very nice feature. Now my old and my new equipment can all network together and backup to, or store common files on a new high-speed network drive. The gigbit backup speed is much improved over the older USB external drives.

The Network Wizard software is very helpful not only in setting up this router, but also with setting up or monitoring other computers, printers, etc on the network.

The suprisingly not so good: The patch cable provided was Cat 5e but was not certified for gigabit transmissions. I could only get that desired speed by replacing the included cable. Seems kind of foolish to get a gigabit router & have its speed limited by the patch cable!

One confusing (to me) issue is that the 10/100 transmission speed is indicated by green lights and the gigabit transmission speed is indicated by yellow/orange light -- that yellow/orange color on most other network equipment signals a problem. I had to switch several cables trying to solve the "problem" before I finally read that part of the manual.

Customer Review: nice router but media storage link difficult to setup
Summary: 4 Stars

Bought this router and other wireless N type accessories in 2008 and thought I would share my reviews.

Excited about the wireless N claims of range and speed, it was enticing enough. However upon setup and use, found the range was greatly affected by normal obstacles such as walls etc. The speed averages around 180mbps which is great compared to the older 54mbps that linksys had in its routers. Connectivity is usually constant with not much drop off, of course distance is a big factor for this as well.

The only real issue with this router was the storage link. I never figured it out and linksys owners manuals and online setup screens are difficult to maneuver through. Your almost afraid to adjust much as you dont want to over ride or alter the firewalls and built in safety features. I left well enough alone and just used the router as my central hub for everything else which it does just fine. I also purchased the linksys family of wireless n networking adapters which work fine.

This unit is backward compatible with wireless g/b equipment such as wireless printers etc.

I rated this router 4 out of 5 due to the storage link issue as described.

Customer Review: Difficult to set up and inconsistent with other routers made by Linksys
Summary: 3 Stars

First thing I have to say is that the network storage feature does not work at all. The first time you set it up it works and after that it's anybody's guess. I just forgot it is there and use it as I would any other wireless router.

I have experience as a network administrator and had a hard time making it work the way I wanted to, and that is with the understanding of what every little switch featured on this thing does. I cannot imagine someone less knowledgeable dealing with these inconsistencies!

The Setup wizard works well only when you follow every step literally. Even after using the setup wizard you should power cycle your modem/DSL and router to be able to see the internet.

You will definitely need dual band wireless n adapters to get the best and speediest connection. Some of the default settings won't let you get the best connection if you have Linksys adapters, for example the "frame burst" setting on each band.

Once everything is working right it is a great router and a very safe one, albeit some disconnects that happen once in a while, which apparently happen in all wireless connections. Linksys should not be faulted for that.

Customer Review: Excellent router, not so good for USB storage
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a novice at anything networking but I wanted to upgrade from my DSL companies old 2Wire DSL modem and router so I did some reserarch and then I stood at a big box electronics store for an hour trying to decide between this and a DLink gaming router. Since the clerks at this store have no desire to really help anyone I finally decided on this one because of two things, dual-band and storagelink. I will begin with the negative and one that is said on almost all the reviews for this product, the storagelink, well, it stinks. I cant figure it out and so that is not being used, thus the 4 stars instead of 5. On the other end I can tell you that everything else is above and beyond what I would want from a wireless router. I have no drops and the speed is incredible. Setup was fast with my Dell notebook, Lexmark wireless printer and my for now wired Xbox 360. I had no problems with the setup of any of these devices and I went from having signal strength for almost no tv transmissions from my notebook to my Xbox to having good enough for HD which is what I was looking for... So I recommend this very highly, just be prepared to be like everybody else, disappointed in storagelink.

Customer Review: Disappointing - range/bandwidth not as good as my old D-link DIR-655
Summary: 2 Stars

I had some challenges getting this router set up, but it was nothing too serious. The install disk didn't work (they never do), so I had to do a manual install. This in itself wasn't too bad, but it did take some fiddling which I expect would be intimidating for someone without prior networking experience.

In any case, once I had it set up, I found the signal strength and bandwidth were not nearly as good as my existing single-band router, a D-Link DIR-655. On the 5GHz band, I could barely get a signal (8%) just a couple of rooms away. On the other band, I was getting about 30%. With the D-Link router, I was getting 75%+. This was both surprising and disappointing.

By the way, I'm using my network to stream HD video, so I really need the extra bandwidth. For other purposes, this router might be fine, but it failed miserably with the video. I've had good success with HD video using the D-Link router, so I should have left well enough alone, but I was hoping for some added performance.

Maybe I got a dud unit, but after a few hours of extreme frustration I gave up and returned the Linksys unit in favor of the D-Link.
