Customer Review: Linksys WRT600N
Summary: 4 Stars

Received today 06/13/2008. Would not recognize my existing internet connection with the included software but that was fixed by going online and downloading the easylink advisor. Won't go into detail as I see it has been well covered by others.

However, I would like to comment on the speed and distance. I'm only using the 2.4Ghz "N" radio portion of the WRT600N but it covers both stories of my home and will even extend to the detached mother-in-law quarters about 120' from where the router is located. All of this at 3-5 bars. It does drop to 2 bars at my neighbors front porch.

Wireless speed 5' from the router is 130mbps and this increases as I move down stairs into the kitchen to 270mbps. Much much better than the 11mbps that I was getting from my old Linksys BEFW11S4 with 802.11b technology.

My wired desktop speed increased dramatically from the old router. I use Comcast cable service and MySpeed PC VoIP Advanced Edition for checking my internet speed (This is a purchased program). I use a fast Comcast service with a normal download speed of around 8mbps and an upload speed in excess of 4mbps. This has increased with the installation of the new router to 27mbps download and still at 4mbps for the upload speed. This difference is based on the last speed test that I did with the old router about 30 days ago. This difference is real unless Comcast has done something on their end to increase the download speed of my service in the last 30 days.

Customer Review: So far so good
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had this unit about a month and as of yet have not used the 5 Ghz band. I purchased this to replace a Netgear G router that died after about 3 years. I read a ton of reviews on draft N routers and finally settled on this one. Contrary to some reviews the set up, at least of the 2 laptops and one wireless desktop, were very simple although I did it manually rather than use the wizard (I try to stick with what I know). Each computer connected the first time I tried it. The range seems to be a little less than the Netgear unit that it replaced but after I worked with the antennas a little bit I now get a soild signal to all three computers and they are on the floor above the unit at opposite ends of a 3,700 sq foot house. All in all I am very happy with it so far. There is one thing I do not undertstand about it and that is my download speed has doubled on the 3 wireless connections. I am on a cable modem so the speed has always varied with the time of day but when it is as fast as it gets at 4 AM or as slow as it gets at 7PM it is still roughly twice as fast as the old one. I am still using the same Netgear G card in the desktop and both laptops have built in receivers so no change there but regardless of which computer we use the download speed is about double. Because of this I have yet to invest in a draft N receiver but I will liklely get to it in the next month or so and I will try to update this review at that time.

Customer Review: Great if all you wanted was WiFi. Garbage if your interested in the Storage Link option
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased the WRT600N and a Dlink DIR-655 for comparison. I really wanted to keep the WRT600N but my main reason for buying it over the DLink, the storage link, turned out to be a joke.

I first tested it with my 8GB USB 2.0 flash drive that was formatted Fat32 and the speed was HORRIBLE. I connected the same flash drive that was connected via Ethernet to the linksys and shared out the drive and the speed was 10 X faster than through storage link. I formatted NTFS and the storage link was faster than before but still 3-4 times slower than when shared through another computer. I then tried my 300GB USB 2.0 external drive. It was already NTFS but it was still 3 times slower via the USB Storage link than when shared out through a wired computer :(

Linksys promises a USB connectible streaming server via Storage Link. They did not deliver as this seriously dissapoints.

As far as the WiFi is concerned it was easy enough to set up as I am familiar with their web interface. I got 270 Mbps pretty much right out of the box. I put it in my "Network" / linen closet on the second floor of my house and while sitting pretty much under it I got 270Mbps. When I oved about 20ft away the speed dropped to low 100's after that.

If all you want is Wifi its not a bad unit for that but if you think its worth the extra money over other units for Storage Link... Think Again!!

Customer Review: Lost my Data
Summary: 2 Stars

After adding this router to my network I could connect to the 5Ghz channel at 270Mb, connection speed on the 2.4Ghz side is 130Mb. Moving my laptop to another room and the connection speeds drop to 13Mb or less, while the WAP54G maintains 54Mb connection speeds. Updated the vista drivers and the 5Ghz channels now drops to 80Mb. Have not tried connection speeds with a linksys wireless N adapter.

The very bad:

After setting up the network, I connected an external Maxtor 300GB hard drive to the USB port. This drive had 200GB of data, backups and file shares. I had to create shares for all the folders because for some reason there is no way to share the root folder. This part, I could deal with. One night the power went out, Island wide black out. After the power can back on, everything was working, except, all my data was gone, all the shares were gone, all my backups were gone. Moving the external disk back to a PC, 'format before use' message, not good. Moved external disk to a vista laptop, 'format disk before use' message. These steps confirmed my data loss. I don't use the USB port anymore.

I only connect on the 'A' or 'G' radio, my HP Laptop has an Intel wireless 4965AGN adapter. I don't regret buying this router, I do regret plugging in my external disk. 270Mbs is better than 54Mbps, only 2 stars due to my data loss.

Customer Review: Linksys WRT600N - Worth every penny!
Summary: 5 Stars

I upgraded from a D-link di-524 to the Linksys WRT600N, and am 100% glad I did so. I was hesitant due to the issues I had getting all my Tivos, and gaming systems on the D-link router.

The Linksys router was a breeze to set up, and I had all my PCs, 3 Tivos, PS3, X-box 360, and Wii connected within an hour.

I purchased a MyBook 1TB, and plugged it into the back USB port, and had it up and running in just a short while. The instructions don't specify that you have to add users via the web-interface, to allow people to access that hard drive. Once I figured that out, I was golden.

My 5Ghz network gets 270mbps wirelessly. The 2.4Ghz network gets roughly 130mbps. Still 80mbps faster than G (54mbps). Wired, I get the full gigabit. If only my internet connection was that fast.

The router performs exactly how I want a router of this price to. My only dissatisfaction thus far is that the software they provide you to configure your PC to connect, isn't 64-bit compatible. Some warning on the packaging would have been nice. Luckily, I didn't need it.

If you're thinking about making the jump to N, this is the router for anyone who's serious about speed, and ease of use. I'll honestly never buy another wireless product from anyone other than Linksys. Goodbye D-link.
